Ryan O'Reilly

I wanted to put a little fan post together in response to reports that Ottawa is interested in Ryan O'Reilly and has been for quite some time. This is largely in response to SensChirp's article posted this morning, but he's not the only source that has reported on this. While I'd be happy to have a young, two way forward in O'Reilly's mould, I don't think a forward is what we need right now and I think our lowest positional need is at centre. Turris and Zibanejad have been excelling of late and the Likes of Lazar and Pageau are waiting in the wings for bigger roles.

I personally fail to see how Ryan O'Reilly would be a trade fit for this team. One of the reasons is that I think Kyle Turris is already largely filling the role that O'Reilly would play, that of a young, competent two-way forward. Here are a bunch of numbers combined from this season and last.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love me some Turris, and I love that two way game. My impression is that there are fans and probably people in management that don't feel like Turris is a "top-line centre" and I vehemently disagree. I don't see where O'Reilly would necessarily bring anything different to the table.

I wouldn't necessarily balk at acquiring O'Reilly if the price was right and we were somehow confident he could be retained past next year for a reasonable price, but I simply can't imagine a scenario playing out where that's the case.

The other factor is Zibanejad, who is younger and cheaper than O'Reilly for the foreseeable future.

The Hockey News on O'Reilly:

"His annual cap hit is $6 million but in actual salary he’s making $5.8 million this season and $6.2 million for 2015-16. Should he test the 2016 free-agent market he could command over $8-million annually."

We can reasonably expect to pay Zibanejad half what we'd pay O'Reilly next year, and we'd likely be paying he and Turris less combined than what O'Reilly would command after next season.

Here's a smaller Chart comparing Zibanejad and O'Reilly based on this season alone:

O'Reilly's numbers, particularly relative to his team are arguably better, but are they millions of dollars better? Twice as many millions? I don't think so. And what would that mean for the line-up?

Mac-Turris-Stone

Hoffman-Zibanejad Ryan

Michalek-O'Reilly-Chiasson

Greening-Legwand-Lazar

or

Hoffman-O'Reilly-Ryan

Mac Turris Chiasson

Michalek-Zibanejad-Stone

Greening-Legwand-Lazar

I can't help but feel like some talent is being seriously wasted in each of those scenarios.

The other option would be to have Zibanejad switch to play wing in the future, and that would likely mean more shuffling. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Bobby Ryan can also play LW? In that case you could have a line up like:

B.Ryan-O'Reilly-Zibanejad

Mac-Turris-Chiasson

Hoffman-Lazar-Stone

Michalek-Legwand-Condra

Any way you swing it, I don't feel like the move is worth it. I don't feel like we end up addressing our main issues, in fact I think we are probably addressing an area where we have the least problems.
