How Much is Hoffman Worth?

Mike Hoffman goes to arbitration on July 30. He's asked for $3.4-million, while the Sens have offered $1.75-million. Here's what I think he should get.

Hoffman and Senators Arbitration Numbers Far Apart

Hoffman's ask of $3.4m is a bit lower than what many of us were probably expecting - at one point he was rumoured to be asking for more money than the $3.5m Stone signed for. Some might feel it is a little high, but it is certainly not unreasonable for a starting point. $1.75m counter offer, though? That just feels insulting. Hoffman's arbitration is scheduled for Thursday, so we should have a final number by Saturday whenever the arbitrator feels like it.

Mike Hoffman files for arbitration

Mike Hoffman has filed for salary arbitration. Hoffman led the Senators last season with 27 goals scored, though his perceived defensive shortcomings got him demoted to the fourth line toward the end of the season. The two sides will continue to negotiate, as they can come to an agreement any time before the arbitrator's award. As a famous example, last year P.K. Subban had his arbitration hearing with the Canadiens, then signed an eight-year, $9-million deal before the arbitrator's ruling was released.
