Silver Nuggets: Konopka signing reaction; Kelly bringing Cup to Ottawa in late July

New, comments

As we hit July 6, we are still 75 days away until the Senators open their preseason schedule in Toronto, while 18 days after that, the Senators will play the Detroit Red Wings in their regular season opener. In other words, it is still a long time away.

Here are today's links:

General Sens News

  • Don Brennan got his wish as the Ottawa Senators signed Zenon Konopka to a one-year deal. Brennan wonders if the Senators are the toughest team in the league now with Konopka, Chris Neil, Matt Carkner and Zack Smith on their roster. He also notes that the Boston Bruins also have four tough guys in Zdeno Chara, Milan Lucic, Shawn Thornton and Adam McQuaid and they won the Stanley Cup. Slight difference being Lucic scored 30 goals and Chara has 40+ points as a defenceman for six straight years. (Ottawa Sun)
  • The guys at The 6th Sens can't quite make sense of the Konopka signing, and neither can I. I think having Konopka lugging around is one less spot that could go to a call-up such as Erik Condra, Andre Petersson or Stephane da Costa at some point during the season. They do note however, that Jason Spezza should be able to take less defensive zone draws and save some energy for offensive zone play. (The 6th Sens)
  • As we await the start of the season, here are ten reasons to be excited for October 7. (Senshot)
  • The Stanley Cup is starting its journey around the world with the members of the Boston Bruins. Chris Kelly will bring it to Ottawa at the end of July. (TSN)

General Hockey News

  • A hockey fan from Quebec was so offended by a joke on Puck Daddy that he/she felt compelled to email the Human Right Commission. Ha! (Greg Wyshynski)
  • Tomas Kaberle has signed with the Carolina Hurricanes in a three-year deal worth $12.75 million. (TSN)
