Although we're still waiting on the initial announcement from the Ottawa Senators, insiders are reporting that Vladimir Tarasenko has been traded to the Florida Panthers, two days before the NHL trade deadline.

According to Pierre LeBrun, Ottawa will retain 50% of Tarasenko's $5M salary. The return is a 2024 fourth round draft pick, which becomes a 2026 third if the Panthers win the cup this year, as well as a 2025 third round pick.

It's a very underwhelming return for a player that's been very good in Ottawa, but not completely unexpected given that he has a full no trade clause. When Ottawa signed him to a one year deal over the summer, many speculated that they would be able to turn him into assets at the trade deadline. I guess that's technically what they did.

Maybe Tarasenko will help defeat the Leafs in the playoffs this year!
