Spezza wants out in part because he doesn't want to be the whipping boy. The expectations on Spezza only increased when he was named Captain. If BM is trying to move him, I think it's unlikely the Sens would keep him as Captain next season, so the Sens actually have another issue to deal with - finding the next captain.
If BM can't get what he wants for Spezza in a trade, perhaps he could kill two birds with one stone by signing Jarome Iginla. Granted, Iggy probably wants to play for a contender, but he would be the perfect captain since he's got the experience and can take the pressure and be a good example to a growing team. He did that for years in Calgary.
Spezza would get a great sniper on his wing that would take the pressure of him, boost his stats and generally make playing more gratifying. Would that be enough to swing his opinion back in favor of staying on?
If so, Spezza and Iggy would be a great start to a 1a/1b line. With another solid top-4 D and the young guys maturing, Sens could definitely have a shot at the playoffs again and perhaps even take a shot at going deep in a year or two.
