Ottawa Senators Select Francis Perron With The 190th Pick

Bryan Murray had a busy day on Saturday - Phillip MacCallum

The Senators reached into the Q to produce their second pick of the 7th round

After a lot of anticipation and not much action on the first day of the draft, the Senators had five picks on day two from which to grow the farm system. With their fifth and final selection, the Senators chose Francis Perron of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies. His boxcars, courtesy of Elite Prospects:

Perron was ranked 70th by Central Scouting among North American skaters eligible for the 2014 draft, and he finished third on his team in scoring in '13-'14. For an age 17 season, 55 points in 68 games is nothing to sneeze at. Perron also brings a strong pedigree: he dominated AA and AAA hockey and was taken 6th overall in the QMJHL draft in 2012. He has also represented Canada-Quebec in the U17 World Hockey Challenge.

Overall, it's hard to know what to make of these late round selections because they're something like lottery tickets. I am a big fan of the strategy here, however: go for high skill, high ceiling players. Swing for the fences and you might hit a jackpot. It's unlikely Perron makes it to the big show, especially any time soon, but he profiles as a high skill player that might surprise a few years from now.
