Draft Possibilities

With draft day quickly approaching next Sunday, I thought I could look at the possible names we could hear when Sens go up and make their selection.

I've heard from many that this draft is very deep, and similar to the out-of-this-world 2003 draft. I'm not sure if any year could ever match that draft, and I'll believe it when I see it. The media tends to overhype every draft by saying how good it is, but hopefully the pundits are right this time.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I think Ottawa should address their blueline before the forward ranks. Even though many GM's say to take the best player available, I really suggest to management that a defenseman is taken. I think that Murray would agree that taking a dman is a better option at this point. Just because I might as well, here are some forward options at the 17th pick:

Andre Burakovsky

Alex Wennberg

Max Domi

Bo Horvat

I don't know particularly too much about each prospect, but each one of those guys could be around #17. Burakovsky and Wennberg are both Swedes, and we know how much the scouting staff loves them. Domi is an option, however, I can't imagine the Sens wanting to take him purely because of his father. I know he is very talented and all, but it might just be slightly awkward for them to take him. Bo Horvat is around a point a game player, with goal-scoring being his main threat. He had a much better playoffs than regular season.

Now like I mentioned, I really want the Sens to draft a defenseman. Getting any one of Darnell Nurse, Ramsus Ristolainen, and Nikita Zadorov might seem like wishful thinking, but it could happen. The only thing is, I can't imagine Muuray taking Zadorov just because he is Russian. Here are some guys that I would love to get, and are more plausible options:

Ryan Pulock

Josh Morrissey

Mirco Mueller

Samuel Morin

Pulock could be the guy to replace Sergei Gonchar/ be a quality offensive defenseman. Morrissey and Morin have more of a two-way game, with Morin being a towering presence that is always need on the back-end. The one guy that I have a soft spot for is Mirco Mueller. He is the only player out of this group that I've seen live. I saw 3 Everett vs. Vancouver games this year, and every single game he was the best player. Sure, Everett and Vancouver were pretty awful teams, but Mueller played liked a season vet with a steadying presence and has some offensive flare as well. I almost wished we had a pick around 25 instead, because I don't think he will go as high as 17 unless one team is really high on him. If the Sens saw what I did, they might be inclined to pick Mueller. I can imagine him being an Ekman-Larsson type who is very solid yet goes under the radar.

So, there are some options for this upcoming draft. If I had to order the defenseman in who I wanted the most it would be Nurse, Ristolainen, Pulock, Zadorov, Mueller, Morrissey, and Morin. I don't think the Sens will swap picks with anyone, and if there is a trade it will involve a d-man going the Sens way.

Hopefully this draft can be another step forward by replenishing the system, especially on defense. I can't wait for the draft...all 7 rounds in one day!

I'm interested to hear what people have to say about this draft. Who do you think Ottawa should take?
