Paul MacLean wins Jack Adams Award

"Eff that guy." - USA TODAY Sports

It's well deserved.

Ottawa Senators head coach Paul MacLean has beaten out a very strong field to win the Jack Adams Award as the coach of the year in the NHL.

MacLean credited his veteran players, like Daniel Alfredsson, Sergei Gonchar, and Chris Phillips for helping him keep the locker room focused when the team suffered injuries to its best players.

He was also quick to credit goaltending coach Rick Wamsley for his work with Robin Lehner and Ben Bishop, as well as Luke Richardson, head coach of the Binghamton Senators, for preparing the young players for the roles they were forced to step into. He described the call-up process as telling Richardson what kind of player they needed (How sad is it that they had so many injuries that they had to specify which position?!) and Richardson would tell them which player was performing best.

It's no surprise that MacLean spread the credit for his success around to his staff. His ability to communicate and work with his staff and his team is the reason he was hired, and the outstanding job he's done in that regard is exactly the reason he was able to win this award.
