A Primer for Temporary Sens Fans

Welcome to all you fans of other teams who have decided to cheer for the Senators in round 2! It doesn't matter if it's because of the 4-1 series win over the Habs (or just Kanata Fight Night), a hatred of the Pens, or just love of a dark horse team, we're happy to have you aboard the bandwagon!

Here are a few essentials to help you make the most of your new Sens fandom, fleeting as it may be.

  • Craig Anderson is a beast, especially in the playoffs. His performance this season so far is ranking as the 52nd best SV% in a single playoffs. Which only sounds sorta impressive, but take out the 1 and 2 game wonders he moves up to 5th. His career in the playoffs is .938, which is good enough for 10th overall - or 3rd when you take out goalies who have actually played an entire playoff game.
  • Zack Smith doesn't give a crap, but in a good way.
  • A few Sens twitter hashtags for the playoffs: #sens, #peskysens, #bigbootypoppin, #teamwalrus, #lalala
  • Around here, Daniel Alfredsson is God. You don't have to be a true believer, but please don't start any religious arguments.
  • In the event the Leafs advance, the CBC will almost certainly have Bob Cole as the commentator for the Sens games. So remember, the Bob Cole drinking game is best played either as a team, or with a stomach pump on hand. If you're using the Sens-specific ruleset, play both as a team and with a stomach pump on hand - you'll need it if you want to survive.
  • Since the Sens are facing the Penguins, someone is going to bring up the Euge's forensic investigation. Part of having an owner who is emotionally invested in the team is sometimes he does crazy things like that. But sometimes he does crazy awesome things instead.
  • Expect a lot of breakaway chances by Erik Condra, especially on the penalty kill. Expect him to score on none of them. Ever.
  • Sens Money on the Board is an awesome fan made charity drive for the Sens Foundation where you pledge based on in-game events of your own choosing. And they have swag to give out! Consider making a pledge, big or small.
  • Trustache: The act of trusting the decision making of Paul MacLean (aka "the Paulrus"), no matter how batshit crazy it seems at the time.
  • Listen, we're as shocked as everyone else that Matt Kassian had a 2 point night in game 5. Trustache.
  • Erik Karlsson may be 100% healthy, but he's not back to 100% performance. Despite that, he's currently leading all defensemen in points per game in the playoffs this year. We are not surprised.
  • We're a little surprised to see Marc Methot in a 7 way tie for 3rd on that list, though.
  • We're more surprised to see Andre Benoit in that same 7 way tie for 3rd, even if it is as a one game wonder.
  • If there's an injury, just put in an AHL player and he'll perform like a seasoned veteran right away. That's just how it works.
  • Q: How awesome are MacLean's pressers?
  • A: Very awesome.
  • The 7 Ottawa rookies have 9 goals and 8 assists in a combined 27 man-games. The only team with more points per rookie was Anaheim, who had one rookie in the lineup.
  • Kassian qualifies as a rookie, apparently. Okay, not all of these points are essential.
  • Remember, you can't teach small.
  • Maybe Karlsson's points per game isn't that good, though. After all, he's tied with some 40 year old.
