I get it that the rest of the league and the media aren't as pumped about the season the sens are having as we are. I find it frustrating but I understand.
Just a few minutes ago I got 2 sentences into an article on TSN and almost had to stop reading. The article did go on to give some light praise to the Senators, but I still found it fundamentally offensive.
The article began as follows (emphasis is my own):
"(Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators have been able to hang around in the playoff hunt despite a number of injuries this season to some of their top players.
The Sens hope that their luck doesn't run out on Thursday evening when they try to snap a 10-game series home losing streak to the Boston Bruins."
Now, I'm not an expert on rhetoric by any means, but could they be giving us any less credit?
For me, "hanging around the playoff hunt" would be teams like the Islanders, or Tampa bay, teams like Edmonton or Columbus.
Ottawa currently is 6 points up on Jersey in 8th and 9 points up on the Islanders. We're closer to the division lead (5 pts) than we are to falling out of the playoffs.
The next sentence then attributes our arguably miraculous performance this year under the circumstances, not to team depth, outstanding coaching, heart or tenacity. But to luck. And in doing so, mentions our poor record against the Bruins at home.
I'm probably over-reacting a bit here. But I'm finding myself a little extra-defensive of the Senators this year.
