This season hasn't gone exactly the way any senators fan was hoping, however, as a sports fan, you must always try to think of ways to improve your favorite team. This is what today's post is all about. The senators record currently stands at a measly 15-17-7, good enough for 11th in the east. Surprisingly enough, we are within a few point of a playoff spot.
via storage.canoe.caGood news is, we know we can do better. Bad news is we currently have many under producing and underperforming players. This is a common situation in professional sports, it is called a drought. This list contains players such as: michalek, conacher, greening (a lot), wiercicoh (to a certain extent), pageau, smith, cowen and condra, to be precise. There are a few know solutions to this problem, more notably a trade. The trade winds have been blowing around the senators since the beginning of the season because of their abysmal play. Names such as Michael Del Zotto have come up. I for one am a big proponent to getting this guy in a trade. Rangers where under the helm of known crazy man Tortorella. However, this year, with vigneault, has been a different story. He hasn't been getting the ice time or the confidence to plya the same way he use to. He has been, to be fair, not a top 4 defenseman. His possession stats have been fairly steady but he doesn't seem to be fit for Alain Vigneault's style of play, which has cost the team. On the bright side, this guy has gone from an untouchable on the roster to a very tradeable asset on a fair contract, he's in need of a change of scenery and I think Ottawa is the perfect destination for him. Why Ottawa? Well, our defence has not been great, to say the least. We have been caught many times taking to much time to make decisions. I know that Ceci has come up to Ottawa and has done a pretty good job, however he's young and I think he needs a little more work on his game. In addition, before the season, I thought wiercioch was going to be 'the man', but he hasn't, at all. The coach has ended up playing 36 year old Corvo (the slowest player on the team, maybe even slower than Kassian, yea it's that bad) and Gryba (who has become very soft and a little slow in making decision, why? I don't know). All these factors have brought our team defense to being the 26th best in the league (fifth worst) at 3.10 goals against per game on average and I believe this is due in large part to our defensive breakdowns. To be fair, I don't think anyone has had a great season up to now except maybe the turris line and karlsson and even at that Karlsson is -8.
via l.yimg.comAll this has brought me to the idea that we should try to make a trade that could brung high reward without giving up too much, which is exactly why Del Zotto is the perfect target, because he has a very high ceiling, is 23 and shoots left (two point one-timer defenseman on the powerplay? yes!) Why do I think that making a trade is the best way to go? Well let's look at the stats within past years. Last year, before we got Kassian we were 13-8-5, as soon as we got him, we won 6 of our next 8 games and finished the season with a better winnig percentage (.574 to .583). Then, the year before, we traded Rundblad and a 2nd round pick for Turris and our winning percentage went form .515 to .561. To add, in 2010, before we traded for Anderson, our winning percentage was .388 and we managed to finish the season with a .451 winning percentage. All in all, this demonstrates that our team reacts positively to trades, which is why I belive this is a perfect time to make a deal and get the team going.
