In cold Blood: Senators sign defence prospect Ben Blood

Get ready for some of the world's worst punny headlines, Sens fans: The Ottawa Senators just inked defenceman Ben Blood to a two-year entry-level contract.

Hopefully Blood gets at least one career goal assisted by Mark Stone, so we can use that killer line. (Think about it... )

Unfortunately, Lee Sweatt isn't in the organization, because no copy editor could turn down a "Blood, Sweatt, and tears" headline to sum up the 2011-12 Binghamton Senators season.

Blood was drafted in the fourth round (120 overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, and just finished up his fourth season with the University of North Dakota. He scored 3G and 18A to put up his best season offensively, but he's definitely not an offensive player; at 6'3" and 212 pounds, he's a physical defensive defender. He's a positionally sound defender with decent skating.

Blood will report to Binghamton to play out the string this season on an amateur try-out agreement, but his contract begins in earnest in 2012-13. He'll likely need some seasoning in the AHL before getting his shot at the NHL, but he and Mark Borowiecki would form an imposing duo in Bingo--before one of them jumps to the NHL and plays on an even more intimidating pairing alongside Jared Cowen.
