I was recently talking to my friend about the possibility of Bryan Murray packaging prospects and this year's pick in order to move up in the draft. While I'm no expert and my ideas of potential trades are more along the lines of NHL 2003 fantasy league level (completely unrealistic) than reality, I like the idea of trading to move up in the draft.
Ottawa went from the days of Muckler depleting the farm to all of a sudden having a wealth of prospects. With 3 first round picks last year and a ton of top-end college siginings, Ottawa is ranked only behind Florida in terms of prospects as per Hockey's Future's standings (though that does still say Rundblad is our top prospect and I would think Edmonton should be in 1st. not Florida).
By no means am I suggesting abandoning the rebuild but personally, I'd rather package a few prospects along with a pick to draft a potential superstar.
The size of the package depends on how far we'd want to move up. If you take a look at a mock draft, Ottawa currently sits 15th and are more in need of a defencemen than a forward. Moving into the top 5 would take way too much away from our prospect pool in my opinion but that mock draft has Dumba, Rielly, Trouba, Reinhart and Ceci all outside of the top 5. All of those players have the potential to be elite defencemen in the NHL and Ottawa needs another shutdown guy in my opinion.
I was thinking that packaging players like Butler and/or Petersson would intrigue a lot of teams. What do you guys think?
