Game 57: Nashville Predators @ Ottawa Senators

Nashville Predators at Ottawa Senators, Feb 9, 2012 7:30 PM EST

The Ottawa Senators will try once more to snap their losing streak, which is currently sitting at seven games. Tonight, the opponents will be Mike Fisher and the Nashville Predators. That's not the only big event tonight though, as the game will also be the 1000th of Chris Phillips' career. Brian Lee and Bobby Butler will return to the lineup in the place of Zenon Konopka and Matt Carkner. Lastly, Alex Auld will start. (!!!)

Here are the lines from Nicolas St-Pierre:

Milan Michalek - Jason Spezza - Bobby Butler
Colin Greening - Kyle Turris - Daniel Alfredsson
Kaspars Daugavins - Zack Smith - Erik Condra
Nick Foligno - Jim O'Brien - Chris Neil

Filip Kuba - Erik Karlsson
Jared Cowen - Sergei Gonchar
Chris Phillips - Brian Lee

Alex Auld (starter)
Craig Anderson

Star-divide

Here is what I will be looking out for tonight:

  • Chris Phillips: A big night for Phillips in his 1000th career game. He hasn't had a good season, being relegated to the bottom pairing, but he had an improved effort last time out. Can he keep it up tonight?
  • Mike Fisher returns: Mike Fisher will play his first game back in Ottawa since being traded. He'll get a nice ovation, but hopefully he struggles after that for Ottawa's sake.
  • Alex Auld starts: Alex Auld will make his first start since late December. He played most of the last game and allowed only one goal. Another game like that would help the Senators get a victory.
  • Chris Neil needs to improve: He was brutal against St. Louis, with the Senators being outchanced 8-1 while Neil was on the ice and the Senators outchancing St. Louis 18-5 with Neil off the ice. He surely can't do any worse tonight.

Nice to see O’Brien still up with the big club. Hopefully Butler can get it going, tough team to try to get back on track against though. Go Sens!!

Foligno

On the fourth line – with Chris Neal. It should make him tougher – but I dont think he needs to work on that part of his game so much. We need him to take it up a notch by putting the puck in the net more often. I am not sure how to make sense of this move.

by Aenesidemus on Feb 9, 2012 6:01 PM EST reply actions

I think it's just Paulrus changing the vibe

New goalie, new lines, new start.

It may also have to do with matchups. That third line is a very defensive line tonight.

He was once called the worst participant Cirque du Soleil ever had.

by RogerTheShrubber on Feb 9, 2012 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

yeah - I hope so

Foligno has hardly been the problem with this team. Imagine him sliding to the 4th line and seeing the healthy scratch Butler land on the 1st to bump him down. I’m sure he’s a mature guy but it would be on my mind if I was him.

I’m still sad that we don’t get to see Geoffrion. His grandpappy would have been 81 years old this week, and his great-grandpappy died 75 years years ago. Did anyone happen to catch any tributes to Morenz at eh ASG weekend?

Kaspars Daugavins?

I sure didn’t. I thought he’d maybe be a good fourth-liner, and he’s been alright. All he’s got to do is not let the other team score, and maybe hold onto the puck in the offensive zone. He does that alright.

I was hoping for that from most of the team

I dont know why I have been silently cheering for him. I guess I was hoping for them to all have breakthrough and career years. Reason doesnt figure into my being a fan sometimes. Hmmm.

I’m happier for Gomez than I am for Phillips. So shoot me.

Come on Michalek - save your job...

If Chris Phillips can do it – and in someone elses net at that…..

Super Congrats to Phillips.

Anyone else here have the feeling Michalek could be moved? I mean, they could all be moved at this point, but, he would be tempting to dangle. Personally, I hope we keep him – and resign Kuba. If we can get a reasonable contract out of him – without the no trade – he could be an effective part of our rebuild.

But Michalek – would make it easier for us to acquire someone with a better pedigree.

wish we had someone better we could slide in to let him watch for a while. If BMurr does anything, it should be that.

first 5 mins of this period looked like the last 7 games (minus Boston)

but otherwise, they’ve looked good this game. And except for the first 2 PPs – those were totally forgettable.

Maybe Butler really is one of those guys who only excels with the top line.

It could have been true of Filatov but…. er…. let`s kill that there.

Last two-goal game for Phillips

More recent than I expected: Nov 19, 2009, in a 6-2 victory over PIT.
He also had two-goal games in 1998 and 2001.

Interesting take.

The league was super-quick to plan next year’s Winter Classic because they are trying to send a signal that they are anticipating no long work stoppage.

In other words, expect to see the Leafs@Wings in 2019, like the ASG in Ottawa in 2012
