Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Centers and Defence

What is to become of Stephan DeCosta? Is he going to stay with the B-sens?Future possibility of centers Spezza-Turris- Zibanejad -Smith. Were does this put DeCosta? Could he make a switch to wing, were we need an imediot improvement. DeCosta is a point per game player in the AHL and when he becomes stronger could be a fine asset if we can place him somewere.

Also who do you think is the most note worthy defensemen in our prospect pool. Borowiecki made the AHL all-star game in his rookie season. Gryba is a good defensive defenseman but still need some polishing, even though his struggles may be due to the lack of success our B-Sens have had. On the offensive side of things Weircioch is a good prospect but has been forced out due to his unfortunate injury, a puck to the throat.

Any thoughts?

Defence depth is barren. Claesson has legit top-4 potential, but outside of him, Cowen, and Karlsson, we don’t have anyone in the system that can be expected to fill a top-4 role on a contender. The three guys you mentioned might be able to hack it in prime roles, but I wouldn’t bet on it. We need at least one young top-4 D-man, if not two.

At center, someone’s going to have to move to the wing. There’s no denying that. The problem I see is that Spezza-Turris-Zib is our ideal center setup, while Smith is a highly valuable role player. Smith might have 50 point upside (with the right wingers) but he’s more likely to be a 20-15 scorer. Winchester is an excellent 4th line center and is likely to have an affordable contract for the rest of his career. He should probably be our 4th/checking line center when we start to contend. Two of Smith, Zib, and Da Costa are going to have to move to the wing, at some point, if Winch is kept around.

Centres: It’s a lot easier to switch from centre to wing, so that’s not a problem, really. Zibanejad played as a winger in the World Juniors, and he looked good there; I think he’d fit in well on a line with Turris, but he could also work well with Spezza.

Da Costa makes way more sense as a centreman based on his style, but he could turn into a Kyle Wellwood-esque winger, too. Still, some of his passes are incredible, and I think there’s good reason to expect him to play on the third line next year (which might end up as a 2B line).

That would leave the top four centres as Spezza-Turris-Da Costa-Z. Smith. Not a bad top four, although I wouldn’t be surprised if Z. Smith climbs up to the third line once again.

Defencemen: Boro’s had a hell of a rookie season, but it’s still a big leap from the AHL to the NHL—especially for young, physical defencemen. His strength won’t be an issue, but his speed and decision-making might, so that’s what he’ll have to work on. He might have another partial or full season in Binghamton in order to work on it, but time will tell. I don’t really see Gryba or Wiercioch as ready for the NHL yet, either, but a summer of working out might better prepare them.

I agree with 80, to a degree, that there’s little NHL-ready defensive depth for Ottawa right now. There’s Cowen and Karlsson, who’ll be in the top four without a doubt. Then there’s two slow old guys (Phillips and Gonchar) and two limited-effectiveness young-ish guys (Lee and Carkner). If no one else if ready to step up next season (which looks like it will be the case), Ottawa will need to sign or acquire someone. There are names out there, but I’d like the person to be young and have middle-pairing potential. Cam Fowler could be an intriguing option.

If we’re looking at UFAs to sign: Barrett Jackman, Pavel Kubina, Matt Carle, Greg Zanon, and Kurtis Foster all look fine. Maybe even Sheldon Souray would be an option.

Matt Carle would be an ideal replacement for Gonchar or Kuba.
Jackman would be an ideal replacement for Carkner, who could fill a top-4 role while Claesson and Boro get prepared for the show.

not sure about the Fowler thing. I wouldn’t take the sophomore slump too seriously. He’s also put up much better ppg in the 2nd quarter than he did in the 1st and 3rd (thus far). The team was terrible and he hasn’t led them back but he’s a 19 year old slumping in his 2nd season and he was a calder candidate. Unless you’re willing to move an A-list prospect and a 1st, with maybe a roster player, you can guarantee we won’t be getting Fowler.

Shoot, you're right

I got Cam Fowler and Cam Barker confused for a moment (I imagined a player with Fowler’s age and skill, but Barker’s value on the trade market). Rest assured that won’t happen again.

Lots of "potentials"

To answer your question about Da Costa is anyone’s guess, and that’s up to Da Costa. He will be among a large group of “potentials”, (and I use that word loosely) for next year’s TC.

How many of Z’jad, Silfverberg, Stone, Petersson and maybe our 1st round pick will be ready is anyone’s guess. Da Costa will be hard pressed to get ahead of that list in a cap era where the guy with the contract usually wins out even if he gets outplayed.

Da Costa’s fate also depends on which prospects, if any get moved.

And which guys will end up being the centers and which ones will be the wingers will be the Paulrus’ job to figure out.

We started the season supposedly with our strength being our depth on defence. Being at the bottom of the heap in GA in both the NHL and the AHL attests to the fallacy of that. We have alot of potential #6 and #7 dmen in our system, but it is increasingly clear that Phillips, Gonchar and Kuba need to be replaced NOW… Kuba because of his contract situation, and the fact that it’d be difficult to get him to agree to a one year deal.

The good news is that this is the year where a team can rebuild it’s defence long term if they have enough draft picks… but BM and company have the short term to worry about.

I like Peter’s list… Cam Fowler, Barrett Jackman, Pavel Kubina, Matt Carle, Greg Zanon, and Kurtis Foster as possibilities… until he gets to Souray. Please NO to Souray. Another defensive liability is not the answer. There’s a reason he ended up in the AHL. He should have stayed in Montreal, but he got greedy.

Can you imagine the number of shorthanded goals against with Souray and Karlsson on the PP?

He was in the AHL for reasons beyond his play

But I agree to some extent: We can’t afford to have Gonchar and Souray on the same team.

It was under his control earlier

Yes you are right about that. At that point in his career, it was about the ridiculous contract. But it was all under his control earlier in his career, and he could have played out his career nicely in Montreal where he had found the perfect role for what he brought to the table.

Instead of playing out his career at $3.5 – $4 million per or whatever the Habs offered at the time, he got greedy and THAT was under his control.

I’m sorry, but faulting the player for getting the best deal possible is pretty ridiculous. Souray went out and got market value for his services at the time. The Habs were lowballing and that’s why they didn’t end up signing him.

Agreed

Taking an offer isn’t evidence of being greedy. He had complaints about the approach of Edmonton’s management, and considering the circus that team has become, I wouldn’t be surprised if he had good reason.
