No traction for Senators in 5-0 loss to Maple Leafs

OTTAWA, CANADA - FEBRUARY 4: Phil Kessel #81 of the Toronto Maple Leafs scores a first period goal against Craig Anderson #41 of the Ottawa Senators during an NHL game at Scotiabank Place on February 4, 2012 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Jana Chytilova/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images)

Things started well for the Ottawa Senators. Well, the first shift was good, anyway. Kyle Turris won the faceoff, and Daniel Alfredsson broke in and got a good shot on James Reimer.

But it was all downhill from there.

The Toronto Maple Leafs made the most of their scoring chances, while Ottawa--despite lots of shots--didn't have many scoring chances, and those that they had were stopped by Reimer. Five different Leafs scored on Craig Anderson, and the game finished with a 5-0 score. It wasn't pretty. Add it to the list of memorable blowouts.

Sens Killer: Phil Kessel
Same shit, different day. Once again, Kessel lit the Senators up like a Christmas tree, finishing the game with a goal and two assists--both assists terrific passes without which no offence would have been created. His speed, his shot, and (tonight anyway) his playmaking looked most of Ottawa's defencemen look downright foolish tonight. He now has 9P (4G, 5A) in 5GP against the Sens so far this season.

Star-divide

Sens Killer: James Reimer
Reimer stopped all 49 shots he faced. He was positionally sound, remaining square to every shooter, and basically slurping up every shot to prevent rebound opportunities for the Senators. It was his second straight shutout, and he looks like he's a second-half performer.

Sens Killers: Slow defencemen

  • Jared Cowen: He's really taken some steps back from his early-season play, but the bright side is that there's little chance he's forgotten everything. He might need to sit in the press box for a game to be reminded of what brings him success, but he'll rebound.
  • Sergei Gonchar: Looked slow tonight. Very slow. He doesn't have the footspeed to play a team-high 24:53 against a speedy team like the Leafs.
  • Matt Carkner: See above, although Carkner was minus-2 in just 12:52 TOI. For Kessel's goal, Carkner was aware of the speed--but that awareness forced him to back right up to avoid getting left in the dust, instead offering a perfect screen against Anderson. It was an admirable shot-block, but he wasn't fast enough after that.
  • Dion Phaneuf: A goal, a couple hits, a couple shots, a lot of good defence. Basically, somebody fucking weeeeeeeeeeent, and it was Phaneuf.

Sens Hero: Daniel Alfredsson
Without question, the Sens best skater on Saturday. He had a beast of a shift to open the game, getting a decent scoring chance, and didn't slow down from there. Unfortunately, he didn't have the support needed to break through the Leafs' stonewall.

Honourable Mention: Erik Karlsson
Karlsson followed Alfie's lead as much as was possible, and managed to finish the game even while playing 23:59 TOI. He had four shots on net (plus another four that were blocked or went wide), and had his feet moving quickly all night long.

Honourable Mention: Jim O'Brien
He might have played less ice time than anyone else in the game, but O'Brien still stood out. It looked like he was bumped up to play with some top forwards towards the end of the game, too, which was a fitting reward for his hustle.

Phil Kessel’s Sens-killerosity is well documented, but Reimer is quickly catching up.

Kid starts his career with a 1-goal performance against us, follows it up with a shutout loss to newly acquired Anderson, then a shaky .920 game to win again.

This season started slowly, with that epic 6-5 victory, and then last month’s horrible 3-2 loss, but now he’s back to form.

In short, fuck Reimer.

That's the key

They had plenty of shots, but none were really scoring chances. There’s virtually nothing from the slot, because the Sens couldn’t even get there.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 4, 2012 11:26 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree

We had a lot of scoring chances, I think according to the 6th sens, we had more than Leafs on even strength. Granted it was because we were losing and pushing most of the game, but we generated a lot.

I really can’t fault the offensive effort tonight aside from not scoring that is.

I love soft players (especially Europeans) that play on the perimeter. Enigmas are awesome. Grit and heart-and-soul are red flags.

What good is a scoring chance if you don't score?

That’s like being proud of yourself for trying to get Apollo 13 back to Earth.

This wasn’t a game of “We outchanced them; things just didn’t bounce our way.” That statistic totally belies how thoroughly we were dominated in this game.

That was pretty much a must win game, boys…. Terrible game, from start to finish. Bless you for skipping the “highlights.” If they lose their next game, that would put their surprising season in jeoprady.

Gap control

Real issues on that end. We give up too many prime opportunities in the prime areas. And we look slower these past few weeks too!

There's the phrase for it

Carkner’s gap control was horrendous on the Kessel goal.

Meh. I'm kind of worried now.

Ever since we installed those rings, we’re winless. Even in the All Star Game.

The Dutch Treat

I didn’t watch the game as I was busy with Winterlude stuff. Therefore, in my world, this abortion didn’t happen.

From what I’m hearing, the words “easiest 49 save shutout ever” is being thrown around by my Leaf fan friends. Apparently, the shots don’t dictate how the Leafs bootf@cked the Sens tonight.

Awesome.

Dammit!

For some reason I always fill that top space in like it’s a log-in…force of habit.

But now I will make it my meme.

Also, the next time a Leafs fan gets all salty that we boo their players, I’ll replay this game for them…

…before driving the dvd copy deep into their skulls.

Frakking Leafs.

Okay fellas. This losing streak was fun, but let’s win a few now please?

Not happening...

I think Maclean has got it in his head that Auld gives him no chance at winning a game and now that we’re right back to battling for the 8th spot, he’s going to ride Anderson til he has to tie his arms to the post like he’s Goldberg in the Mighty Ducks.

I really wish Murray picked up Nittymaaki off of waivers. And then placed Auld on them. It’s ridiculous that Anderson will probably be making his 18th AND 19th straight start this week. The mental toll that it’s probably taking on him is unfair. He carried this team thru January and he deserves a break to recharge and refocus. Instead, they’re going to run him into the ground til his play falls apart.

by The Dutch Treat on Feb 5, 2012 1:21 AM EST up reply actions

Were the announcers pissing anyone else off?

They went in about 1 sentence turnaround from saying that the Senators have done absolutely nothing all game and had no energy to saying that James Reimer is the undisputed first star of the game. Those just don’t get along well at all. If he’s the undisputed first star, then clearly the Sens have done SOMETHING. At another point, the refered to Kuba trying hard but just can’t catch Kessel, and show the replay of Kuba taking two strides then just drifting after him. Clearly you’re not going to catch anyone with that little hussle, but they jump at the opportunity to talk about how Kessel’s speed was just “too much for him.” The game was peppered with things like that, where they said things that seemed blatently false, but made the leafs look great and the sens look horrible. That said, it didn’t take much work to make the Sens look horrible last night.

And, incidentally, what the hell was the point in keeping Anderson in all game? Make sure he’s good and tired for the stretch? Try to kill whatever confidence he still had? It makes no sense to me.

Incidentally, after this last losing stretch, being the fickle fan that I am, I’m back on the “Dump all UFAs at the deadline” bandwagon. The most we would have going in to the postseason is a cinderella story. I don’t want a cinderella story, I want to build a powerhouse, and don’t care if it takes a few years. This team, frankly, isn’t good enough yet. We’ve got a full line of forwards hoping to make the jump next year (Stone-Zibby-Silfverberg) and that’s a good start, but we’ve also got to bulk up the defence. Our defensive prospects took a serious blow when we sent Rundblad away, and if we can get a good solid D prospect or two from Kuba or Gonchar, I’d say go for it.

But it's the CBC!

I know it’s a long established fact that the CBC are homers for the Leafs, but it still irks me.

by spez_dispenser on Feb 5, 2012 11:36 AM EST up reply actions

Youve never heard a CBC Leaf game called by Jim Hughston and Healy. They despise the Leafs.

Being a Leafs fan makes me bipolar.

by BlindSight on Feb 5, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

If this keeps up, we'll be sellers

Which might not be a bad thing. I agree solidifying the D seems in order. Sens seemed like a mess in their own end, and it seems to be a trend not just a one game thing.

I’d have BMurray take a swing for the fences and try to land Suter or Weber (unlikely he’ll leave Nashville though). Send Kuba back and a conditional 1st (if we re-sign Suter) – Nashville might like Kuba as a decent top-4, more affordable replacement.

by Joebo on Feb 6, 2012 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

Suter will go for MUCH more than Kuba and a conditional first, and we really shouldn’t be abandoning the rebuild for a rental player. We don’t want to be the Leafs, do we?

Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.

by Alex Swift on Feb 6, 2012 6:34 PM EST up reply actions

well then we up it

We have rookies in Zijanejad and Silvferberg (sp?) that might displace someone from our top 6 next year, so maybe we start there.

And yes, the assumption is to swing for the fences to get one of these guys as a permanent addition to replace the Chara/Volchenkov gap. Conditional pick(s) are to ensure we don’t bet the farm on a rental.

Also, Northfan, coming from the buying team’s perspective, I don’t think we should overestimate Suter’s trade value. You always want to start low as a buyer.

That was just sloppy. Sloppy sloppy sloppy.

I had this odd night at home by myself, where I didn’t have to work and the wife was away. As luck would have it, it was Leafs/Sens night. I thought the universe was coming together for me.

The universe wasn’t coming together. The universe is a chump!

Goddammit I hate losing to the Leafs.

Galactus does as he pleases. Because Galactus is drunk.

Yech

I’m afraid that our weakness on defence has caught up to us. To collapse like that after dominating in the beginning of the game… and to the Leafs. That was painful… especially Gonchar who has such a huge responsibility and is neither delivering offensively or defensively.

At the beginning of the year, I was expecting to see alot of that kind of painful game… and was pleasantly surprised at our offence and our comeback ability.

Now without Spezza and Alfy being the stars, nothing seems to be working and a playoff position is disappearing.

by Marvellous on Feb 5, 2012 11:33 AM EST reply actions

Spezza is injured, and needs time off to recover it.

Until he’s healthy, he’s not going to be able to help the team. He needs a few games off to relax and fix whatever is bothering him.

by The Tif on Feb 5, 2012 12:15 PM EST reply actions

It's his lower back.

In the pre-game video of the team getting ready in the dressing room, he had a big hump under his t-shirt that was clearly a big bad of ice. Then if you watched him take the opening faceoff, he barely was able to move in a swiping motion.

That's what I figured - he's had back trouble all through his career.

I think for the last few years he’s always missed a few games to deal with it.

by The Tif on Feb 5, 2012 1:27 PM EST up reply actions

I think what has happened is the team has let the good press go to their heads. They were being touted by local media and others to be having such a great season and were a team to be reconed with. I think the human side of us starts to feel good about ourselves and maybe lose that edge that was winning the games. Also other teams were starting to take notice and preparing alot better to play us as the games just before the losing streak will show we were just barely winning. We were lucky in a few of the last wins and it all caught up to us. The challenge now for the team is to have a reset, get healthy, and most of all get back the speed and determination and hard work that got us the winning way.

I agree that gap control has been terrible, other teams recover pucks way to easy.
This is the time where MaClean need to earn his money and turn this thing around.

GO SENS GO GO TEXANS GO

by SENSGUY1 on Feb 5, 2012 1:02 PM EST reply actions

This is true.

The recaps have been talking a lot about being out hustled for pucks. That’s not something that used to happen.

by The Tif on Feb 5, 2012 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

I dunno if it's an overconfidence thing

but I do buy that other teams are studying up on Karlsson and the power-play in general.

That’s the thing with pro sports, you can’t have a surprising start and then expect it to carry you the whole way through the season – other teams are going to get better and make you look like you got worse even if you stay the same.
