Star-divide

We all love our team and many of us have opinions and ideas on how to change the Sens for the better. I'm interested in those ideas. Don't be constrained by things like salary cap and budget, we're just brainstorming here. It doesn't have to be on ice changes like "I'd bring in a power winger, a top six forward type" (but of course, it can be). It could be something incredibly functional like, "I would improve OCTranspo service to Scotiabank Place". Anything should be brought up and discussed in detail!

I have already posted about my interest in a Sens museum/arena tour and the next big change I would make would be to the uniforms. I want to bring back the original white jerseys. I feel like the sideways centurion logo is still the most recognizable Sens logo and that many fans feel that logo/design was classic. I still associate that jersey with the best moments of the franchise (Alfie's overtime winner against Buffalo to send us to the Cup Finals). Also, I think the current whites are fairly generic and the lines are too similar to Pittsburgh. I would love the heritage jersey to be a permanent feature of the Sens' look. I think they did a great job with the design (the nod to the past, modern updates, font choice) and I want to see them wear it in more games. However, I don't want the Sens to get rid of the red by any means. We may have come into the league wearing white and black but it is red I associate with this team's success. I don't have strong feelings about our current red jerseys nor did I really have strong feelings about the previous red. The previous red was somewhat silly (the stripes) but was distinct. I love the red because it's highly visible and I love when the Bank is a sea of red. But given the success of the heritage jersey, I would try a red jersey update. I would keep the forward facing logo (either design, like aspects of both) and add in other elements like horizontal stripes (personal bias, love horizontal stripes). I feel like bringing back the original whites, making the heritage jersey permanent and more visible, and updating the reds ensures not only that we have a great look, but that our past and present is connected visually.

What do you think? What changes would you make to the Sens organization to make our club better than ever?

I’ve wanted to see them make a white version with this logo for ages now http://content.sportslogos.net/logos/1/21/full/x8dxgo0eh0zensmq7icp.gif

But I found going to Ottawa and the All Star fan fair really made me realize how many jersey designs we’ve had over the years. It’s borderline ridiculous. I think if you were to update the red jersey I would want it to harken back to the asymmetrical red jersey that the team wore pre-Edge redesign. That was the jersey that the team wore during it’s most successful period in team history. Update that jersey, it was very unique when compared around the league.

I loved that asymmetrical red jersey.

It’s my favorite ever, probably.

It's my least favourite ever

The sad goth centurion is ridiculous. I hate it even more than I hate the SNES jersey.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 5, 2012 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

I find the only thing I hate about the SNES jersey was that wordmark. The rest of that jersey looked really sharp, shame it was wasted. I think I disliked the old black 3rd jersey with the sad centurion, never liked that gold pattern on the arms and waist.

by modsuperstar on Feb 5, 2012 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

I would fire my marketing team

I would switch back to the 2-D Centurion logo on our shoulder patches, and the old-school ‘S’ replacing the ‘O’ on our heritage jerseys. We’d have one black and one white, and our logo would never change again.

I would call Murray and Paulrus into my office and make my expectations clear: MacLean tells Murray what he needs; Murray gets it.

Then I would take my hands off the team, worry about signing checks, and only make changes after a year-end review.

It's hard to really quantify

I don’t feel like they have a good handle on the pulse of the fans.

The SNES jersey is a great example of this. Coming up with a quality third jersey was a no-brainer. Jacob Barrette was able to do it, yet the marketing team produced a blandly-styled Tron outfit using a nickname with the text running in a direction counter to every hockey tradition. Meanwhile, Barrette’s O was loved by everyone. At that point, the direction for the jersey should have been clear yet the marketing team went forward with SNES. So, either A) they chose to put out a design that would be mocked by the hockey world despite seeing a better option, or B) they didn’t know about the O design. And if they didn’t know about it, how could they reasonably say they were in touch with what fans wanted? It took 4 years to get a friggin’ jersey right! And that’s ignoring the constant jersey changes that have happened over the years.

This season’s 20th anniversary celebration also irks me. The team is celebrating 20 years, but the majority of the material is based around a team that is much, much older than 20 years ago. Which heritage is the team celebrating this year? The logo at center ice says one thing, but the marketing says another.

This is the team’s 20th year. Where’s Boschman? Karlsson is on pace to break Maciver’s record 20 years later! Where’s the story about this? Where’s the material? Most Karlsson fans today don’t even know who Maciver was or have ever seen any footage of him. It’s the 20-year anniversary, but the team’s history over the past 20 years is mostly being ignored.

I don’t understand that. Those feel like misses to me, and they’re such easy things to take advantage of that I can’t believe any decent marketing team could bungle them like I feel they have been.

The 67s' Jeff Hunt has a better marketing dept than the Sens.

I see more fun 67s ads than Sens’ and anyone who can put 6-7 thousand fans to each OHL game is doing a great job.

And another thing

Zenon Konopka is fucking hilarious. So what does the team do? Try to rip off “Joey the Junior Reporter” with their own kid.

Seriously, just give Konopka a mic and follow him around with a camera.

Too often, l feel like the obvious approach is missed by Sens marketing in place of the copycat approach.

I feel like they always play it safe with marketing etc

It seems like the feel they have a somewhat fickle fan base and don’t want to do anything to piss them off. Often that means not doing anything innovative or interesting.

by Amelia L on Feb 4, 2012 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

I will state that probably the one time where they tried to jump off the page they got absolutely lambasted for it, and that was the infamous playoff Centurion incident.

by modsuperstar on Feb 5, 2012 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

The problem with that wasn't the idea. It was the implementation.

Having a centurion? Great idea!

But!

The guy flubbed his lines.
He wasn’t jacked. There are bigger guys at the YMCA in the same building.
The sound didn’t work.

Had those things been changed, it might have gone over better. But they weren’t, and so it looked even more terrible.

To be fair...

I think the ‘Alex the Jr. Reporter’ thing was CTV’s idea, even if it was supported by the Senators. I think I saw the kid at media day.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 5, 2012 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

I would agree that there does seem to be some confusion

I hated the SNES part of the jersey, didn’t mind the lines of it, but by its release the O jersey was already making the rounds and was much better. The 20th anniversary thing is also confusing. While the original and current Sens are not technically connect, their banners have been part of our arena landscape for years. I’m ok with incorporating the original Sens into our team history, but I think you make a valuable point that the 20th anniversary commemoration has ignored (other than the visibility of the first modern team at the season opener) despite good narratives (MacIver-Karlsson) and the fact that current fans connect with the teams of the first playoff runs, the Battle of Ontario teams, and the Cup run etc.

New Music

I’d change the music played during the breaks in the game. Mainly because 90% of it is utter garbage (IMO) and offends my musical tastes (non top 40) but also how can the players get pumped up to go out on the ice Thursday night, clobber someone, steal the puck and pump it into the back of the net when they’ve got some brutal dance track stuck in their head telling them how great it is that it’s Friday. The players should put together a list of songs that gets their blood going and those songs should be played during the breaks. It makes sense to give your team every advantage and luxury possible in their own barn, it’s basic psychology.

by JeffreyLebowski on Feb 4, 2012 11:46 AM EST reply actions

Ha, I love this

But I think the music is for entertaining fans between play, not to pump up the players. Outside of Jacob Markström, I don’t think most players pay attention to the music.

Things I would do if I owned the Senators:

1. Spend to the cap every year (unless we were in the middle of a 3-year rebuild).
2. Appoint a Director of Hockey Operations and then not involve myself in the day-to-day operations of the club.
3. Before every game, select 4-6 Ottawa fans at random to watch the game in the Owner’s Box with me (and my security).
4. Make parking at SBP $10 instead of $11. $11 is a stupid amount to have to pay.
5. Start a personal rivalry with the owner of the Maple Leafs. OH WAIT, THEY AREN’T OWNED BY A PERSON THEY ARE OWNED BY CORPORATIONS.
6. Photoshop Dany Heatley out of every picture he’s in, Stalin-style.
7. Rename the training room after Lyndon Slewidge: “The Slewidge Treatment Centre”.
8. Replace the scoreboard. That’s right, I want a BIGGER scoreboard.
9. Go on the radio and make predictions concerning the team that are full of bravado and self-delusion. The Euge and I share some passions…
10. Buy all the home tickets for home games vs. the Habs and Leafs and then personally disseminate them only to Senators fans.

It’s nice to dream…
10.

Great post, and lots of great ideas. Here are mine:

1. Adopt the ‘O’ jerseys as the home jerseys, and design a white (or ‘vintage white’) edition to serve as the road jerseys. Re-institute the original centurion logo as a shoulder crest, and use that as a ‘brand’ for the team, mostly because it’s virtually impossible to brand a great big ‘O’ and generate team identity.

2. Improving OC Transpo service to Scotiabank Place would be great, but it’s just treating a symptom instead of treating the disease: Namely, stupid placement of the team’s arena. Assuming I had unlimited funds, I’d relocate the arena to downtown ASAP—and I mean downtown proper, with an arena right on Wellington in between the National Archives of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada. Imagine the reinvigoration of Ottawa’s central business district if that were to happen? Sparks Street would be a true ‘Sens Mile,’ and would become a dynamic, cosmopolitan draw for the city to brag about (instead of a stagnating wind tunnel that closes at 5 p.m. every day). It would require collaboration from the hockey team, the city, the NCC, and PWGSC, which makes it nearly impossible, but it’s what needs to be done. If it can’t be, then Lebreton Flats is a second choice, and Bayview Yards a third.

Wherever the building is, it would need to incorporate Ottawa’s trademark gothic architecture, echoing the Parliament Buildings, rather than trying to look like the Coliseum or something. Sure, this team uses Roman and Greek imagery to build up a brand, but they’re still the Ottawa Senators, and I think there’s ample room to incorporate more Ottawa and less Rome.

3. Continue investing in the team’s scouting staff, and don’t let it stagnate as happened in the mid-2000s. Teams are built through the draft, and it costs money to pay the league’s elite scouts and development staffs—but that money is paid for, and then some, with team success and young and highly marketable league stars.

4. Bring an AHL team to a small yet somewhat close city, such as Kingston or Kitchener-Waterloo, and affiliate with them. Both of those cities are university towns so there’d likely be a good draw if you reach out to the students (especially since the university year coincides with the hockey season). Don’t be afraid to invest in the team; build a winner. Players would be closer to Ottawa, would understand playing in Ontario, and—perhaps best of all—the Senators would gain traction and a fanbase in a city which is likely 75-90 per cent Leafs fans. By chipping away at the Leafs market dominance in Ontario, the Sens benefit.

5. This one’s a little selfish, but I’ll say it anyway: Reach out to new media, and open yourselves up to them. Make players available. Offer exclusive opportunities that lend themselves better to new media than traditional media. More and more fans are reading blogs instead of newspapers and listening to podcasts instead of radio; embrace that change instead of resisting it, and everyone will benefit.

… I’m sure I could come up with more, but this comment is way too long already.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 5, 2012 2:20 PM EST reply actions

Great suggestions Peter

I do think the Sens need to continue to work on their branding. They might be the only game in town but other close options (Leafs/Habs) plus tv advances that allow fans to see and become fans of any team in the league means that they still need to attract and maintain their fan base.
Scouting (and coaching at the NHL and minor league level) have only increased in importance post-lockout. With the cap limiting what you can spend on player salary, organizations need to invest in other areas to get that competitive advantage. There are no limits on what you can spend in scouting and coaching/player development so make the most of that. As you point out and as championship teams like the Pens and the Hawks suggest, teams are built through the draft and investing in scouting and player development only helps in the long run.
I like incorporating the city’s architecture into a new arena (loved the Peace Tower All-Star game logo) and moving the arena to something more central makes the most sense. The east end gets truly shafted with the Kanata location.

by Amelia L on Feb 5, 2012 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

As for your media suggestion

I don’t think it is that self-serving at all. The importance of non-traditional media keeps growing and teams would not only be wise to acknowledge this, but it is in their best interests to utilize the new media their younger fan base relies on.
I hardly ever read about the Sens in MSM and like it that way. Given that our franchise does not seem to be a priority for many mainstream media sources, the most intelligent and critical perspectives are coming from blogs and podcasts.
I would like to see the Sens make some sort of documentary feature like the Oilers’ “Oil Change”. The quality of the program is pretty good and that insider look is pretty interesting. If the organization cannot find a taker among the big channels (TSN, Sportsnet) they could always make it available online. They’ve started to add more video content to their official website, but I think they could do even more with this.

Yeah, that was...a start

But I’d really like to see more of it. More ambitious and for a longer period. I think one of the things “Senate Reform” showed was that their was an audience for that type of program.

This is no different then how the Hamilton Bulldogs are the Habs affiliate. They would carve out a niche in the area. It’s also an area that does have a lot surrounding area to draw on, with Guelph, Cambridge and Brantford all close by. Plus the rumour that the Bulldogs may be moving to Quebec in a year or 2 I think gives it a little more fire as far as ideas go.

I've been to Sparks Street!

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

by Mark Parisi on Feb 5, 2012 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

This would certainly do it

It would also make Bronson Avenue absolute hell on a game night as people stream south to the Queensway (assuming the city decided the best way to get people from the game to the Queensway was via a connection from Wellington to Bronson, which would be my assumption), but the hope would be that fewer people would need to drive (given that the stadium would be two blocks from the city’s already-existing Transitway and future LRT stations, as well as people walking to the game from Centretown or elsewhere downtown), and even those who drive wouldn’t necessarily be leaving at the same time because there would be things to do after the game.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 5, 2012 9:09 PM EST up reply actions

I think it would be great

They could adapt to new traffic concerns as well. It would help revitalize Sparks and just increase the vitality of Elgin and Bank. However, because of the NCC, the Yards seems the most likely destination for the unlikely event of a new rink.

by Amelia L on Feb 5, 2012 9:29 PM EST up reply actions

Also, Yards would be best in terms of OC Transpo

Light rail has much higher capacity than buses (~12,000 per track per direction per hour), and it would be at the junction of the north-south (ideally, extended across the river into Quebec) and east-west LRT lines.

by TheGuineaPig on Feb 5, 2012 9:32 PM EST up reply actions

Actually, OC Transpo says its capacity will be 25,000 each way per hour

30 trains per hour at about ~850 people per train. That’s about the equivalent of a 24-lane highway (of which there are 0 in the world).

by TheGuineaPig on Feb 5, 2012 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

Wellington is just two blocks from the Transitway

So it’s negligibly less preferable to the Yards in terms of transit, I’d say.

The only criticism that I have of it...

…is that there are already-established junior teams in pretty much every market you’d really want to look at for the B-Sens. Junior hockey in both Kingston and Kitchener dates back to the ‘40s. I think it’s daydreaming a bit to think that fans in those markets (Kitchener being Leafland and Kingston’s allegiances being divided between Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto’s big-league teams) would automatically adopt the B-Sens over the existing teams.

And would the Sens really want to be responsible, even partly, for killing off major junior teams in either of those markets, anyway?

by dzuunmod on Feb 6, 2012 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Can't they coexist?

Those cities aren’t the size of Ottawa, sure, but we’ve got two CHL teams and an NHL one in this area, plus all sorts of lower-level junior teams.

CHL and AHL doesn’t have to be either/or, it can be both/and. Imagine we had a player from one of those teams come up through the Ottawa system, playing on the AHL team in that town? It’d be pretty rad. As great as having a 67 or Olympique play for the Sens, maybe more interesting.

by Peter Raaymakers on Feb 6, 2012 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

I'm trying to think of a circumstance where AHL and CHL teams have successfully coexisted...

…and I’m drawing a blank.

The CHL (the Q specifically) only moved into Atlantic Canada after the exodus of AHL teams had begun. They waited for it to happen before putting teams in those markets. Victoria, BC over the years has gone back and forth as a minor-pro/major-junior market, but never has it been both at the same time. There are lots of examples that suggest it’s a bad idea to have both in one city (except maybe a LARGE city), but none going the other way.

by dzuunmod on Feb 7, 2012 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

The GTA has an AHL team and three junior teams, and of course an NHL team. I don’t know how popular they are, but they certainly exist.

That’s the only one I can think of.

That’s the biggest city in the country, not Kingston or Kitchener.

by dzuunmod on Feb 8, 2012 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Other thing

Kingston averaged 2,848 for home attendance last season in the OHL. The lowest attendance in the AHL was in Albany at 3,192. Adult tickets in Kingston are $19, and they’re comparable in Albany, ranging from $16-25.

But Albany is much, much larger. Of course that’s just a one-off comparison that might be unfair for any number of reasons, but I think there’s a lot of evidence to suggest it wouldn’t be a sure thing, marketing two hockey teams in Kingston or Kitchener or wherever.

I love the OPs suggestions about the jerseys.

They’re due for an upgrade soon…hopefully that’s next season. If this is a two year rebuild (year 1 tear down, year two hybrid resurgence/refilling) then next year could mark the beginning of a new era in Sens lore.

Also, I’m at a loss to explain the fact that the “Michalek” scene from Braveheart is not being used after Michalek scores a goal or something like that. It might be tough to work it in there, but there’s got to be a way to do it. Little things like that are just so obvious that the marketing department seems incapable of implementing… It would go a long way to improving the entertainment value of home games.

The product on the ice

My first goal as a team president would be to give the fans a shot at the stanley cup every year and to do so (ok I might sound crazy, hang yourself to your chair…)
I’d first trade Milan Michalek Ok ok, calm down I’ll explain you why.
Milan is a goal scorer, but he is only by streches. In the last 3 years (time he has spend in ottawa), he has been good, bad or injured. He has rarely been outstanding. The guy is 27 and is supposed to be in his prime and if what I’m seeing this season is his prime then I’d said he is a great second line winger on an excellent team. From my stand point, he cannot be asked to carry such a big part of a team (a good one) offense like he does in Ottawa. Yes 23 goals looks good but the overall look is still 23 goals, 10 assists and minus 6 (5 on 5 play) in 50 games. Milan have some value this season and when he was hot (before his recent slump) I would have trade him because, nothing is certain with him and it has always been that way. We don’t know if/when he’s going to get injured, we don’t know if this year (23 goals through 50games) is a fluke and we’ve never had his true measure when It mattered due to an injury (2009-2010 playoff, 1gp 0points). You cannot not know so much things about your first line 27yo winger. For all those reasons, I do think we should try to get an upgrade on that first line winger position.

Here’s my proposal on that. Many (I won’t name anyone) were ok to trade prospects/picks to get a player like Ryan (Bobby). I never agreed because I’ve always thought we should held to our rebuilt plan, be patient with our kids (We got GREAT prospects) and not get over excited by the early year success.
That said, I would be perfectly ok to trade a player like Michalek (while hot) for Ryan because I think it is a true upgrade and It don’t sacrifice any piece of our future. Yeah I know It might take more to get Ryan so let’s say (hot) Michalek+Foligno for Ryan? That trade would give us a great first line winger and open up a spot for a guy like Silfverberg or even Stone on that second line for next year.

Second, I’d trade P. Kuba before he hits the free agency and try to get the max (prospects, picks) for him. He has a more value now then he has ever had as a sens, playing on that 1st pairing but we don’t know if i’ll be back next year and if he does, I don’t think he’ll be as dominant as this year. So I’d trade him.

I have many many other crazy moves coming in my mind but for now, I’d just trade those two.

On a final note, I’m a huge sens fan and as an 18y kid living in gatineau (qc) who has been intimidated, ridiculed, abused for been a senator, I gotta say this site is awsome, It’s quite hard to find a true sens fanbase in the canadien flow and your site have been just that. I found it out a couple of weeks ago and I read every article posted ever since. It’s always interesting and educative. It’s great work. Thanks guys for that, keep it up!

more stickers... and make them free

and i would do only two things:
1) look at the burgeoning international market; competitions, content/broadcasts,cheap merch, stuff. especially to australia. specifically, my house. (i want a heritage jersey… baad!)

2) drop the “sens” moniker altogether. wtf is a ‘sen’ anyway? checking never in the history of the english language has the word ‘sen’ ever been used to mean senator. you don’t need a nickname for a nickname.

I know! It should be a no brainer

Though i actually hope the powers that be haven’t thought of it. That means there’s hope. If they’ve tried and failed, we’re likely stuck until the broadcasters come around to the idea.

Silly Walrus, you should have befriended Butler....

Okay-it is clear that no one in Ottawa is going to give Butler a real shot to play..(and last year had so much promise) everyone is treating him like a 4 or 5th year guy (fans and coaches)…no one has done anything for the kid to help him catch fire. The Sens are starting to tank, o for last 6 games…they cant score, 1 goal scored in the 2 games Butler sat (that really made your team better), the have no power play scorer (Butler can and will score on an NHL power play unit just not here)..Maybe when Walrus stops dreaming of jack adams and gets real-he will realize that good coaches develop talented players. Butler did not go bad overnight and has more scoring potential that both Greening and Condra…But ths guy is just dont get it…Scorers do not grow on trees.

Butler did kinda go bad overnight

He’s had chances. He just hasn’t done anything with them this season.
