Trade Deadline Options
What options do we have at the trade deadline. Everyone knows what player are going to be shopped, Gonchar, Kuba, Carkner, ect. What about the player that are having good year, should they be traded too? Here are some player that should be shopped and traded, if the price is right.
Milan Michalek - Solid season out of him good goal production and he has limited his injuries. Bu the previous two season were not so successful. This guy is a second liner who is having a good season playing with Spezza. Sell high to a cup contender in need of scoring. Options: Kings - who have a high amount of prospects on defense as well as Bernier :)
Nick Foligno - I like the way he plays his game, but he`s having a career year. Drafted in the first round is he a legitimate top 6 forward or is he a checking line player? But then again I like him as our third line winger because he has offensive skill as well as the hustle needed defensively. I dont see the price being right on this guy for our GM to give him up.
Kuba - Is a good partner with Karlsson, but I think Karlsson is such a good d-men give him time with a partner and he can make a lot work. If we push for the playoffs then he will be wanted. But if a price comes along he should be shipped. A late first, early second or a prospect would make me happy.
Gonchar - Old and slow, please just let him go
Peter Regin - Should command a high first round pick or high prospect ( teams love player with glass shoulders)

Foligno is the most likely to be traded
Stone, Zibenajad, Silverberg, Peterson, perhaps even Hoffman are all going to be trying out for the team next year, we can can deal him. As for Kuba unless we get a 2nd or 3rd for him, keep on the team.
I like Foligno if he's a bottom six guy
He’s sort of borderline. If he’s top six, it means it’s a weak top six. If he’s bottom six, he helps cement a very strong bottom six. I’m a big fan of depth.

I don't agree
I think the Sens should hang onto Foligno. We need him on the checking line.
Trading Michalek is a much better plan
He’s had 3 knee surgeries to Foligno’s 0. He is viewed as a legitimate top 6 winger where as Foligno is not. He will get paid twice as much as Foligno for the rest of his career. He trails Foligno by 80 hits this season. All this culminate sin Foligno being a more dependable, cheaper, and less outwardly valuable piece. I think that’s something to hang onto.
Gotta credit the knee surgeon though
Doesn’t seem to have slowed him down at all

The problem I have with trading Michalek is that we don't have anyone who stands ready to replace his production
Assuming any of our prospects can step in and be a 30-goal guy is bad planning, in my opinion. There’s no reason to move a top-6 guy if we can’t get one in return.

Completely agree
Obviously we shouldn’t trade Michalek for picks or prospects, but getting someone younger who hasn’t had 4 knee surgeries and is close to as successful as Michalek. We saw Philly trade a 1st and 3rd for Versteeg last year. They are trying to deal Van Riemsdyk. I’d take Van Riemsdyk and a 3rd for Michalek very quickly. The Preds always need more offense. Colin Wilson or Craig Smith would both be worth while players to grab and we’d probably get a pick thrown in too. The Flames, Penguins, and Panthers are all pretty much one line teams right now. I would think they would be willing to give something quite valuable to secure a player that changes that. Obviously just getting picks and prospects who aren’t producing in the NHL is a bad idea, but the West is as tight as ever and the East race is also pretty close. Owners and GMs always want to make the playoffs and we’re in a position to capitalize. I think it is extremely important to remind ourselves that this rebuild is supposed to take 3 years. Let’s stick to that plan and deal assets who probably won’t be here in 3 years for ones that will.
Yeah, if I was offered JVR and a 3rd for Michalek, I'd thank him for his time with the team and pull the trigger with no regrets

I'm assuming the Regin one is a joke, right?

Hard to say about Michalek
I don’t really have enough information surrounding Michalek. Did this concussion slow down his offensive upside, or is the real Michalek just coming into his own now that he is no longer playing injured all the time? Ot have we seen the best he has already? It’s hard to say.
I don’t see what moving Michalek for a late first round pick accomplishes? GMs don’t usually move anyone to make room for someone. They usually make that player force his way on the team with superior play. Now if we moved Milan, we’d be searching for more top six forwards.
I don’t know why so many of you are so obsessed with moving Foligno just because he didn’t pan out to be a superstar… unless he now wants to get paid like one.
At this point, it’s really hard to project who’s ready next year and who’s not, and only time will tell that story. The only thing that is obvious is that the defence needs to be strengthened.
Nobody will want Gonchar’s contract and Carkner will probably end up getting a TC tryout and going back to the AHL. The only moveable dman we have (out of the ones we may want to move) is Kuba who is now the best defensive dman we have.
These are tough decisions to make. I don’t think we’re going to do much at this deadline.
We Michalek until 2013-14
Keep him for this year, if his production drops trade him next year, the 1 year left on his contract will make trade easier to swallow and a better return.
Foligno can be offer sheeted
I just realized that being an upcoming RFA, if the Sens offer Foligno a 10% raise, he can be offer sheeted for only a 3rd round pick.
Not that it will come to that, but I’m just saying that according to the rules, this is how it works. He needs a contract close to $1.6 million to get a 2nd round pick for an offer sheet.
do nothing
stay the course. Trade Kuba, even if we’re in the playoffs. Someone would pony up a 2nd and a prospect for him. Other than that, do nothing. Please.
The 'A' on Minnesotta Wild winger Dany Heatley's jersey does NOT stand for 'assistant'.
Michalek's worth is overinflated by playing with Spezza
We saw it with Heatley. We see it to a lesser extent with the kids (Greening, Butler). I think we see it with Michalek too. GMs read the stat line and think “that guy’s worth X goals”, without really taking into consideration the guys they are playing with. I think Spezza makes the guys he plays with look better offensively.
I’m not sure what that means about Michalek and this trade season, except that if they do let him go, I hope the get something in return that looks like a fair trade but turns out to be lopsided in our favour as his production goes down, and the new guy taking Spezza’s passes’ production goes up.
Won't get equal value
There is always many ways of looking at any player. Michalek is now our leading scorer and given the inconsistencies of his career along with his oft-injured status, we would never even approach getting equal value for him in a trade.
With the influx of new potential top six talent coming up next year, there are many possibilities for how it will turn out, so I don’t see what the rush is tinkering with the forwards now… since we aren’t going to win very much in the playoffs with this defence.
Teams are always in the market for scorers right after training camp when they realize that they are short in that category.
Relying on Anderson to stand on his head every game, which is what we are doing now, is a recipe for disaster. I think we should be content with what we have and the iincredible progress we made this year.
The off season provides us with way more possibilities for adding players without overpaying because of the current high demand and hence overpayment taking place right now.
For instance Hal Gill is a nice addition for Nashville, but as a rental IMO not worth that 2nd round pick, not to even mention the two prospects they gave up. That 2nd round pick this year could turn into a top dman, perhaps not immediately, but I don’t see how mortgaging their future for some PK help is worth all of that.
Agreed. That Nashville move was the kind of move Muckler would have made
And that’s how we got here. I don’t know that Gill will put them over the edge, but I guess that’s the hope.
There’s no rush to make a trade, there are just abundant opportunities to make a trade when you have many good players playing well and have accepted that this is a rebuilding year. Teams who aren’t in the same position as Ottawa will definitely be willing to pay a handsome price for Kuba or Michalek. We won’t be the ones overpaying in this situation, we’ll be the ones reaping the benefit because there is no pressure to make our team better for this year’s playoffs.
