Senators blow two-goal lead, lose 4-3 to the Bruins
The Ottawa Senators may have lost 4-3 to the Boston Bruins, but by no means were they outplayed by the champions. Despite many things going against them, they were in the game right to the end. The play had been spotty on the west coast trip, but after a week off, the Senators came to play and dominated Boston for stretches. On 5-on-5, Ottawa outshot Boston 33-22 on the night.
The Bruins took the lead in the first period on a power play goal from, what else, a Zdeno Chara slap shot. The Senators would tie it up later in the period when Colin Greening tipped in his 12th goal of the season. A 1-1 scoreline on the road in Boston was certainly a good effort by the visitors.
The second period was complete and utter domination by the Senators. Kyle Turris put the Senators ahead on a beautiful snipe from a Daniel Alfredsson pass. Turris returned the favour to Alfredsson, but the captain's shot would hit the post. Ottawa wouldn't back off and took a 3-1 lead from Erik Karlsson's eighth goal on a 2-on-1 with Chris Neil. A two-goal lead heading into the intermission would have been fantastic, but it was not to be. Milan Lucic's shot hit Erik Karlsson's leg and deflected into the net with just 45 seconds left in the second period.
Karlsson was called for tripping on the slightest of touches early in the third period and Brad Marchand tied the game on the resulting power play. At the 7:09 mark, the Bruins went ahead for good on a goal that can be blamed entirely on Craig Anderson. Dennis Seidenberg's shot from centre ice beat the Ottawa goaltender. Not much else you can say on that. The Senators had two or three great chances in the last 30 seconds, but could not find the equaliser.
Sens Hero: Kyle Turris
Turris was dominant tonight. He scored a goal, setup Alfredsson on a tee and his line was creating chances all night. Great game from Turris.
Sens Zero: Craig Anderson
After the Senators had blown a 3-1 lead, you need your goaltender to calm things down. What you don't need is the goaltender to allow a goal from centre ice. Anderson had been brilliant over the last month, but that was an embarassing goal at the worst time.
Sens Killer: Penalty Kill
Boston scored on its first power play to go ahead 1-0 and scored on their second power play to tie the game at 3-3. The third penalty kill was just under 3 minutes left in the game which Boston used to run down the clock. The last power play was with 6 seconds left. Thus, the penalty kill allowed goals on both attempts where the Bruins were trying to score.
Sens Killer: Referees
The game was officiated by Dan O'Rourke, the referee that labelled Erik Karlsson a diver. The Senators then did not get a single power play all night against one of the most penalised teams in the league. I don't want to say it is a conspiracy against Ottawa, but it sure seemed like O'Rourke wasn't pleased about being called out by Paul MacLean after the Anaheim game. MacLean was visibly upset at the end of tonight's game, however he chose to be diplomatic after the game, saying that the team needs to work harder to gain respect.

“MacLean wasn’t (?) visibly upset at the end of tonight’s game”
That must be a typo, based on the tirade I am pretty sure was coming out of his mouth after the game :)
Ha!
Thanks, fixed it now.
I love soft players (especially Europeans) that play on the perimeter. Enigmas are awesome. Grit and heart-and-soul are red flags.
Erik Karlsson is better than your favourite player.

I feel like I am saying this after every game now...
… but again I say:
I don’t like blaming officiating for losing the game, because there were some clear miscues by us. HOWEVER, they certainly did not give us any chance of staying in it. There were enough blown, obvious calls, and even more opportunities to make them up, that I can’t help thinking silly conspiracy things. And dammit, I am NOT that guy! I HATE that guy.
Oh well. I had pessimistically wrote-off our 4 Bruins games until the end of the season… so let’s just take it to the Islanders 4 times, can we? And maybe the Habs and Leafs too?
I mean, the hockey gods have got to remember us at some point, right?
I agree. Normally not one to blame the refs myself.
But I can’t keep saying “oh well” when it’s so fucking obvious. Granted, the refs didn’t tell Anderson to let in a goal from the red line, but they’re falling for every dive.
Blown calls.
Non-calls.
Imaginary penalty shots.
Something’s gotta give here….
Tim Peel too.
Complete jokes. Get your act together guys…that disallowed Alfie goal vs. PHX was a laugh.
I would say that specific call was borderline… it’s the context that bothers me; all the calls surrounding it. Let’s put it this way: I have seen way more goalie contact go uncalled (for us, in Toronto) and way less contact called… so it’s mostly how this fits into our little narrative here :)
Oh damn it, I did it again. I’m THAT GUY!!
The penalty on Karlsson was iffy at best
Which I figured was okay, since that was the way the game was going to be called. But no. Watching what wasn’t a penalty after that made me completely confused. So then I assumed the refs had swallowed the whistles… until I saw what Foligno was called for late in the period. The double standard was jaw-dropping.

Seeme to me
We’re having a tough time getting the O, the D and the goaltending to have an overall solid game. Seems when we score 4 our D isn’t where it needs to be…and vice versa.
That’s a terrible goal by 41…tipped or not by Carkner’s stick.
We’d better turn this thing around soon or our 8 point cushion will be a 2 point deficit in a hurry.
The 'A' on Minnesotta Wild winger Dany Heatley's jersey does NOT stand for 'assistant'.
The penalty situation in the last few games has reminded me of a similar situation under CC
We weren’t getting many calls because there was a perception (right or wrong) that we chirped the refs to much, once that settled down things went back to normal. I like that MacLean stood up for Karlsson, because I don’t think you want your star to be labelled something negative (especially because he is not a diver), but that public calling out has not worked out. It problem doesn’t help that we’ve had the same officials a few times in the last five games (which seems a little weird).
I generally think that NHL referees are crap and willingly miss calls all the time. I think other factors also contributed to the loss. But the Bruins don’t play within the rules and are not a clean team nor did they play penalty free hockey. I just want the poor quality of officiating to be consistently applied to both teams.
It is weird
Are Peel and O’Rourke our personal referees? If so, can we trade?

Anderson looks gassed.
Bad goals happen. ANyone remember Chris Osgood letting one like that in the playoffs? Moving on.
Auld needs to start vs. Islanders Friday. I know Paulrus wants to ride his goalie until the playoffs are clinched but Anderson needs some rest or he will be dead come the first round of the playoffs. Play Auld Friday, play Andy Saturday.

I just don’t see how rest is the problem. Andy just got back from 7 days with no games, so I don’t see much reason not to start him. Andy usually bounces back after bad starts and that definitely fell into the category of stinker.

Stinker?
First goal he was screened by Lucic who wasn’t even touched in front of the net. Second goal, deflects off Karlsson’s leg. Third goal, 6 foot 4 Phillips can’t stop 5 foot 8 from getting to a rebound. For sure the last goal is on him, but I wouldn’t call it a stinker.

If a playoff run is in the works...
He is going to need to be spelled at some point. At the very least Auld should have played either the Phoenix or LA game or the Islanders game coming up. Hes only played 70 games once in his career…no expert here but Paulrus leaning on him so much makes me uneasy.
If the team is happy with just being in the playoffs and a round one exit, then the whole issue is probably moot.

I would be pretty happy with a first round loss this season. Not that I want to lose, but that’s a great season.

Damn
Left when the game was 2-1 and thought the Sens might finally get a rare win against Boston. Sad to see it collapse on some pretty weak goals.

I'm the last person to fault officiating
And I only caught the third period of the game, but anyone who thought that period was called fairly is either blind or a shameless Bruins fan. Absolutely brutal officiating.

Anyhow, I'm going to make vacation plans for late April/early May
It will suck for me, but it’s the only way to guarantee the Sens make the playoffs.
Spare a thought for me when you do your Alfie cheers.

Here's an awesome comment I had to delete...
… based on one unfortunate problem. It’s so awesome, though, that I had to re-post it with that unfortunate part removed. Courtesy of The Dutch Treat:
"I’m not enjoying hockey anymore…
…and it’s because of the sinking feeling that regardless of how the Senators play, the referees are going to do their damndest to find a way to influence the outcome of the game. As soon as I saw "O’Rourke" on the ref card, I knew we were going to get f###### [content deleted].
Lo and behold, it came to fruition. Yes, that was the flukiest of flukey game-winners, one Anderson would definitely want back, but the call on Seguin that led to the tying goal and the number of missed calls, was infuriating. Mount Maclean exploding at the end was the only satisfaction I took from the game. You know it’s bad when the "King of the homers" Jack Edwards is sympathizing with you.
Also, this team’s biggest weakness? The defense is softer than a basket of kittens. On the first goal, no one steps into Chara’s lane and Cowan leaps away from the shot instead of clearing Lucic?!? On the third goal, Phillips (who’s career decline continues at an alarming rate…three more years…yay) let’s a 5’8 Marchand out-muscle him to a goal!?! Where is the grit and temerity on the back-end. This group doesn’t scare anyone. The Senators desperately need a "Volchenkov"-type player in the backend and fast. They need someone who makes people think twice before entering our zone. Think about it. Who on our defense actually HITS? Until we get some beef back there that throws the body around, teams like Boston will be able to get garbage goals in front of the net."

Sorry Peter…I thought I could get away with a reference to the seminal classic “Dirty Work” starring Norm Macdonald and quoting Sir Christopher Crosby Farley.

No worries
I didn’t think you meant any harm, I’d just rather not cross into that area.
