Predicting The Ottawa Senators Trade Deadline
I foresee that the Ottawa Senators will send Erik Condra and a 2nd round draft pick to the Phoenix Coyotes for winger Mikael Boedker. He will be reunited with former teammate and fellow rushed-into-the-NHL-er Kyle Turris, as well as countryman Peter Regin (if he ever returns, that is...).
The Senators will also acquire Tuomo Ruutu from the Carolina Hurricanes, sacrificing Nick Foligno and a 1st round draft pick. Everyone will say that Ottawa overpaid. And they will be right. But it will happen because Bryan Murray is one stubborn mule of a man. And Eugene Melnyk will not stand in his way! Because despite all of his passion for the great game of hockey, he really does not know much about it. Ruutu will prove to be a good fit alongside Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek, though will be overshadowed by whoever is picked by the Hurricanes in the first round of the 2012 Entry Draft.
Mark my words and remember where you heard them first!

Only problem with the first scenario is that we no longer have a second IIRC.
The second sounds bad. Please don’t let that happen :(
Will never happen
An antique rental player like Ruutu (even though he’s a good player) in exchange for Foligno and our 1st rounder will never happen.
BM did not sit in Mike Milbury’s General Manager course.
Stoned
I could handle just about anything that the Sens decide to do at the deadline except dealing Stone.
That would drill a hole in my plans to buy a Sens jersey with his name on it.
Antique?
When did a 29 year old player become antique?
I don’t feel like Ruutu would put us over the top either… We already have a younger, fairly equivalent version of him in Nick Foligno.
Get real
I thought Ruutu was older… I guess I was thinking of his brother… but still the going price for Ruutu right now is a 1st round pick and a top prospect. That’s pretty steep for a low 20ish goal scorer who is a rental and makes $4 million.
Of course anyone can ask for the moon and the stars to start negotiation, but get real. Some team that is really desperate (for scoring like Montreal) will overpay for Ruutu. I hope that team is not us.
Exactly
Ruutu doesn’t have anything overly special that other Senators won’t bring to the table. He’s not even that big! 6’0 205. While I wouldn’t mind seeing him for Condra/Winchester and a 3rd or something like that, anything higher would leave a bad taste in my mouth.
I just found out Nail Yakupov is Muslim!
That’s awesome!!! That’ll make him only the second Muslim to play in the NHL (assuming he does) after Nazim Kadri. The others have all been career AHL’ers.
I know this isn’t a big deal, but as a Muslim, it’s always cool to see a professional Muslim athlete given how few there are. I’d lose my mind if there was a Pakistani Muslim player in the NHL :P
Kadri may have played in the NHL...
But I don’t see him ever becoming a full-time NHLer. That kid has AHL Beast written all over him.
ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE!
Offensive punch/ Alfie 2.0
Obviously we want Alfie 2.0 to 21.0 for our entire roster. We would be unstoppably humble.
If we are going to be trading one of our 2nd/3rd line grinders and a pick for a top 6 player, I think our return should be a forward with clear offensive prowess. A guy like Tuomo Ruutu is a solid player, for sure, but he doesn’t really have anything in addition to what Foligno, Condra or Greening could give us this year.
If we were to throw our name in the big trades- Bobby Ryan, Evander Kane, Mason Raymond or Ales Hemsky, I think that would necessitate Foligno, a first round pick and a mid level defensive prospect (Borowiecki, Weircoch, Gryba) or mid level offensive prospect (DaCosta, Petersson, Cowick)
One downside to all these potential players is that they DON’T have sick flow. This alone should be the determining factor for our acquisitions, let’s be honest here. Side note: Erik Karlsson is the 17th picture when you type in “sick flow” on google haha.
I've been very wrong before...
…but after the Rundblad trade I really don’t think our defensive prospects are going anywhere. Gonchar’s only got a year left, and could very likely retire after next year. It’s doubtful Kuba comes back, but if he does how long until he retires too? Carkner, too, is a UFA. We’re going to be needing those defensive prospects reasonably soon.

As a hockey fan from Winnipeg...
I would love to get rid of Evander Kane. A player like Foligno would become a fan favourite instantly if he plays like he can. But as a Sens fan first…. no. I would hate to get Kane on the sens. He’s a major-league douche bag. He has problems everywhere he turns because he thinks he`s entitled. That is not the player that the sens need to have. On top of that, I`ve heard that he is a `cancer`in the dressing room. They have put him with veterans on road trips and nobody seems to like him very much (You may be wondering how I know this… and more about Kane. I know a few people that are really close with the team and have heard the horror stories).

la position de Sénateurs
If Murray plays this well (he has so far). He should realize the fire sale was last year. Now with players overperforming, he has the luxury to play it cool. He doesn’t need to make a splash. If there is a bidding war for a player (Ruutu will become overpriced, mark my words) he should just step out. I still feel he should put some players up for sale to see if he could get a bigger, younger fish: Carkner, Winchester, Regin, Foligno.
Moving these guys
It never hurts to kick the tires, but realistically Carkner, Winchester or Regin will probably bring back a late round pick at best. Nobody wants oft-injured guys like Regin and Winchester.
Foligno will end up with close to 20 goals… not bad for a really versatile guy who delivers physically every game and still gets his points for about 1/4 of the cap hit that Ruutu commands. Why move Foligno? Because he didn’t reach his too lofty expectations. Get over it. He’s a useful third line player who can step in on the 2nd line sometimes… and he comes at a bargain price in this day of overpaid 20 goal scorers.
Foligno=Vermette?
I feel like we wanted a lot from Vermette as well, and ditched him when he didn’t live up to our 2nd line centre expectations of him.
As you said, Foligno seems to be a ‘tweener… better than a third line player, but not offensively potent/consistent enough to be a top 6 forward, kind of the same situation as Vermette had a few years back. It’ll be interesting to see how much he asks for when his contract is up this summer, because Vermette netted close to 4 mil with slightly better numbers. Vermette had ,46 ppg in Ottawa, while Foligno has .41 to this point in Ottawa.
Give NuckyBoy $2.8 for three years...
I’m OK with that number and term… but then again, I’m not the GM.
ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE!
Is Marchand comparable?
Marchand has a 2.5 mil cap hit, and achieves slightly better numbers, providing the same kind of grit, and a whole lot more douche-ness.
I think anything over 3 would be overpaying for Foligno. 2.8 sounds pretty fair!
Foligno's having his best year ever
And he’s meeting my expectations right now. I wouldn’t trade him for Ruutu straight-up, to be honest.

Well, kudos for going out there with these...
But Ottawa doesn’t have a second rounder, so the Boedker deal won’t happen, and any GM who sends a young player like Foligno and a first-rounder away for a rental is certifiably insane.

I enjoy this type of dicussion
but I don’t see Murray too much myself.
I believe he thinks the boys can get in the play-offs themselves and he has mentioned the chemistry thing a few times now…he doesn’t want to ruin any magic that is happening.
That said, if he can get a good, young player without giving up too many assets I think he will do his best to land that player. In the end the Sens that are on the team right now are going to dictate if there is any movement by their play.
Right now I see us as having gone through the winning some games you shouldn’t and have moved on to losing some games we shouldn’t and hopefully the Boston game is the end of that and we get on a roll against the Isle/Leafs in back-to-back contests.
If the Sens are a total bubble team I think Murray is more inclined to make a move to try to grab some play-off cash (but still not at the expense of the future) but if they are looking comfortably in or uncomfortably out I think he stands pat.
We may be sellers…at this point we just don’t know!
Filip Kuba to Minnesota for Matt Hackett.

interesting....
I like the idea of getting a solid goalie to give some relaxation time to Andy.
Solves the Wild’s problem with Zidlicky, and Ottawa would have a goaltending tandem of Lehner and Hackett for the future.

Why Matt Hacket?
Just because of the lineage? HF says he’s projected to be a backup. Aren’t plenty of those available via UFA market? If you’re looking for some goalie prospects I’d rather sign some undrafted guy out of europe or US college or something (e.g. Gustafson (sp?) in Toronto)
I guess the NHL should just fire all their scouts and use HF to evaluate players… :-)
Hackett’s numbers are stellar. He’s playoff tested in the AHL (he faced Robin Lehner with the Aeros in last year’s Calder Cup Final), and he’s played extremely well with the Wild in the starts he’s been given this season. He’s in the second year of an entry-level deal so he could be had for a song right now. I’m no scout (or HF contributor, lol), but I think this kid has a lot of upside, and one place the Sens are thin in right now is goalie prospects. Like I said, in a few years a tandem of Lehner and Hackett in goal could be formidable. And yes, the lineage doesn’t hurt either. Looking at his stats and his performance record to date, I actually have no idea why HF has rated him so low. He could be a steal.

HF and goalie prospects
Having worked with HF for a while, I know that they are good for a reference point as to who to sometimes keep an eye on for the draft… period.
The ratings that they use are highly suspect and only as good as the person who is assigned to that particular team… often hugely suspect and hugely outdated… especially the goalie ratings.
That being said, I find that goalies are the biggest crap shoot of any position, so I hesitate to even rate them on my draft lists.
The only way for a team to handle goalie prospects is by sheer numbers… have lots of them… have a great goalie coach and one of your prospects is bound to emerge.
If anything, goalies should be a focus during this year's draft
I don’t like the instability of putting all the future goaltending responsibilities on one player, regardless of how good he’s touted to be. Using a third round pick on a goalie this year would be a wise choice IMHO, but grabbing a goalie at any point in the draft would make me feel better about the team going forward.
Yes
Yes, an injury to Anderson this year and we are toast. We need at least two more goalie prospects and a solid backup.
I’d really like to see us move some excess forwards and dmen for some added draft picks and some defensive defence. In the process we will make room for Silfverberg, Z’jad and Stone. Then we can use some of these mid round picks for goalies and defensive depth.
Agree to all above posts about goalies.
It’s true that goaltenders are always a bigger risk to take in a draft, and more difficult to rate as prospects, mainly because they don’t mature as fast as skaters, which is one reason why so many goalies are drafted out of the European professional leagues, because they’ve already shown what they can do at a high level of competition.
It’s clear that the Sens’ coaching staff and management have no confidence in Alex Auld. They won’t even start him against the Islanders, which despite their recent success is still a team that the Sens should be favoured against. The goaltending postion is IMO still Ottawa’s biggest weakness, because other than Lehner there’s really nobody in the pipe ready to step in.
I proposed the Kuba for Hackett trade because the Sens need to move Kuba, and the Wild are surely going to move Zidlicky, but I don’t see the Sens trading one D-man for another. Ottawa’s blueline is crowded enough, and moving Kuba would finally give Brian Lee an opportunity as a full-time starter. Minnesota could take Kuba and then move Zidlicky for a forward. Ottawa needs depth in goal, Hackett has great numbers, and the Sens organization should be somewhat familiar with him from last year’s AHL playoffs. Auld will not be back next year, and Lehner will likely move into the backup job, so who does that leave in Bingo? Drafting a goalie is not going to fix the immediate void that will be left when Lehner is permanently assigned to Ottawa. Hackett could be a nice addition to address this.
I think it would definitely be worth the gamble to have two promising goalie prospects in the organization – either they’d eventually settle into a natural starter-backup situation, or if they both happen to emerge as potential starters (and there’s no guarantee that it would be Lehner), one or the other could also become valuable trade assets.
