Silver Nuggets: Back to the regular season

A return to the playoffs would mean a lot to Daniel Alfredsson this season. Can the Senators hang on after the all-star break? (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

The all-star game was great for the clubs's fans and the players, but now it is back to the regular season, starting with a game in Boston tomorrow night. This will be Ottawa's sixth consecutive road game, and after winning the first two in Toronto and San Jose, the Senators lost three in a row in Anaheim, Los Angeles and Phoenix. After the visit to Boston, the Senators will play five consecutive games at home starting with the New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs this week.

Ottawa is currently sixth in the eastern conference and despite all their extra games played, they are also sixth in points per game. Hopefully the club doesn't let this streak extend into the 6-7 game range and can bounce back quickly.

What would be an acceptable week for you? I am hoping for and predicting four points out of six.

Star-divide

Here are some links for today:

  • The all-star game was certainly a celebration of Daniel Alfredsson. (Ottawa Sun, Ottawa Citizen, Yahoo!)
  • Alfie was also named third star of the week by the NHL. (Ottawa Sun)
  • And here is a blog by Jason Spezza! (NHL)
  • Brian Elliott doesn't have any bad feelings regarding Ottawa. (Ottawa Sun)
  • Don Cherry talks to the Sun about the time when "the right wing, the hard-working guy in the factory, the construction worker could finally have a say." Ha! He says other crazy stuff too such as educated people not liking him. (Ottawa Sun)
  • Robin Lehner talks at length about this season, and says that he is confident he is a better goaltender right now than even in the playoffs last season. Well...sure can't doubt his confidence. (Press & Sun-Bulletin)
  • Lehner is also happy that a bird "took a dump" on Eric Gryba at the beach. (Robin Lehner)
  • The NHL had a great celebration this weekend, but there is still a lot of uncertainly over the future of the Phoenix Coyotes. (National Post)
  • After it turned out that Sidney Crosby had a broken bone in his neck that Pittsburgh doctors never detected, Crosby's agent didn't deny that his client is upset with the Penguins. (Ottawa Sun)
  • Mike Babcock is a smart man and says acquiring a player for fighting is a waste of time. The Red Wings lead the NHL with 67 points and are last in the NHL with 7 fighting majors. (The Detroit News)

All Star Weekend

I had a very rare opportunity – for me – to speak to hockey ‘celebrities’ this weekend. I was very impressed by how open they were to talking hockey with a fan, without making me feel like the outsider I am.

It will be interesting to see, though, how many different rumours will begin to circulate based on others’ conversations with the same people. “I was talking to ____ and he agreed with me when I said ____ should never/should be traded.” That sort of thing.

Anyway, it was a treat to meet these people and to have a chance to chat with them. I’m looking forward to the second half of this season in a way that I haven’t for a couple of years now.

It's been a hard working weekend for an awful lot of people.

The production company in charge of the ASG show this weekend did an incredible job and there were so very many people involved at SBP. The catwalks were covered with cables for the huge lighting and sound system they brought in to augment our own, the arena was jammed with workers and media, and the city’s done well for itself.

Absolutely. It was a phenomenal event.

You guys behind the scenes did a great job of making sure everything went well, and the glitz and glamour was awesome.

Having said that, I'm not eager for another one. *.* *flops over*

I didn’t do as much as many other people, since my area’s rather limited in scope, but it was something else.

Beat Toronto and Isles at home, lose to Bruins. Seems reasonable.

I love soft players (especially Europeans) that play on the perimeter. Enigmas are awesome. Grit and heart-and-soul are red flags.

Erik Karlsson is better than your favourite player.

Not quite how it came up with it, but it certainly does seem reasonable

That specific sequence came out at 12.4%, though this sheet only uses L10. So it gave us the same odds of beating the Bruins as it did the Islanders (cause they’ve got the same L10), and 50/50 on the Leafs (cause we’ve got the same L10).

I should probably update it to use a blend of records like I did with the season projection spread sheet….

My favourite part of the Elliott story in the Sun...

… is the fact that they had Aedan Helmer write it, instead of someone like Garrioch or Brennan. I wonder if that’s just a coincidence, or if the other two didn’t want to bother trying to talk to him.

Haha yeah I notice that. I also liked he specifically he used the word vendetta. ;)

Ego

Probably hurts their ego that he’s doing so well. My question is have Garrioch or Brennan ever played hockey? Cause I find they’re a bit too critical at times? (I know it’s the most obvious statement you’ve probably ever seen)
