Binghamton Senators goalie Robin Lehner, who hasn't made it a secret that he likes to hunt down other goalies, decided to join in a line brawl during last night's match against the Syracuse Crunch.

However, in his attempt to reach Crunch goalie Jeff Deslauriers, a referee and linesman intervened. Lehner physically resisted the two of them (video), ultimately finding himself rejected and potentially facing a suspension.

I know he's going to get suspended for this

Because when an official grabs you, you don’t try to fight your way out of it.

But damn, I love him.

Did the opposing goalie take part in the scrum at the other end, thus giving the Crunch a one-man advantage?

If so, then both officials should have been down there to keep people apart, not rush to stop an even-up.

No, he didn't

He stayed in his crease trying to ignore the oncoming Lehner.

That was bad Robin

It was better than I expected, because I feared he actually hit the referee, though he just seems to be trying to get loose.

Still that’s unacceptable and he should get suspended.

But yeah I still love the guy. :D

If the other goalie had been in the mix, then they probably wouldn't have headed him off like that.

Lehner's obviously bought into the "Hey, if *my* team is fighting, I'M fighting!" mentality.

Either that or he just thinks it makes him more Canadian. “I WILL BE A MAN OF CANADA! BEAVER PUNCH!”

BEAVER PUNCH?

That’s a whole other ballgame. Pun totally intended.

It seemed like the Crunch goalie skated out to see what was up

That was all that it took for Drago to flip out. It really looked to me like he thought the other guy was looking for someone to fight, and he went into “THIS IS BULLSHIT” RAGE MODE.

Aaaaand I get back to ordering my Lehner heritage jersey, not even caring if he ever makes the team.

That was awesome!

… and he’s probably getting a suspension

My favourite part of the video is where you see Lehner approaching. It looks like he’s coming to fight the cameraman. I kind of want to see it set to the theme from Jaws.

Lehner's going to be the next Hextall (the one that doesn't play for the shitty Flyers).

I keep picturing him doing that in The Heritage Jersey (caps for awesome). I can’t wait to see it, because he’ll be my hero.

I like how he doesn’t rush down the ice or anything either, he just kinda casually skates down, and nobody really notices til he gets to the blue line

if he's suspended by the ahl, can he play in the nhl?

are they mutually exclusive like that? if so, why not give him a shot? what’s with all the questions?

This is really weird

You don’t usually see refs get in the way of fights at all; it’s really just the linesman’s job. And then it takes to in stripes to keep him away from Deslauriers?

What a strange sequence.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jan 2, 2012 9:30 AM EST reply actions

Not a good scene, IMO.

I love this guy’s intensity.

But he hasn’t earned enough stripes to be tangling with … the stripes.

He needs to focus this year. It’s great to have won last year but he should be working on improving on his game, not chasing down goalies 200 feet away. He had way too long to think about it. He should have thought better of it long before the refs got to him.

by sensory_experience on Jan 2, 2012 11:08 AM EST reply actions

Jeez.

The refs jumped Drago! What the hell!

I really hope he can be one of those batsh*t insane, but amazingly good goalies.

by The Tif on Jan 2, 2012 12:12 PM EST reply actions

It always seems to me that the difference between an ok goalie and an elite one is confidence.

That’s the thing I completely love about Drago; he’s always supremely confident, even when things aren’t going well. If that means he’s a little batshit crazy, so be it.

Suspension?

I agree that there is a need for a suspension but 10 games? wow. You take a headshot at someone and knock them out for the season and you get less than andy sutton, brendan smith, or Jean-Francois Jaques leaving the bench during a fight.NAH. I realize they are different leagues and does Lehner even have a reputation of being a bad boy?

My understanding was that the rulebook said something about this length of a suspension for this type of infraction, but there was a misinterpretation by me. Ray Emery got 10 games for a similar incident, although upon appeal it was reduced to 6 games. I’m going to reword the post.

I love the fact he is a competitor and loves hockey but am disappointed he will be missing games when the reason for playing for the Bsens was to play games, does this and his stats this season give us a hint that he is not ready for a backup role next season in the big club?

by fan of the 2020 cup champs...senators on Jan 2, 2012 4:08 PM EST reply actions

I have more of a problem with his stats this season than an incident like this

A 6-12-1 record with a 3.10 GAA and a .910 save percentage, all of which are markedly worse than Mike McKenna’s done this season. Lehner was supposed to come in as the starter, but his inconsistent play has left McKenna as the go-to guy in Binghamton. Nothing Lehner’s done this season leads me to believe he’s ready for the NHL.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jan 2, 2012 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

We'll just get Brian Eliott

…for 600k to back up Anderson for one more season and then Lehner can step in…

I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.
