KHL team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl's plane crashed - 44 dead, 1 injured
A plane carrying KHL team Lokomotiv Yaroslavl crashed shortly after takeoff today. Current reports are saying 44 dead and 1 injured. 1 player had survived the crash, but is now reported as later dying in hospital.
Names of the victims have not been released are somewhat roughly translated here.
The team has confirmed the entire main roster was on the flight (including former Senators Pavol Demitra and Karel Rachunek, and former Senators draft pick Vitaly Anikeyenko), as well as 4 players from the youth team.

Absolutely awful. Whoever the victims are, my condolences to their friends and family.

More details are coming out on that
The entire main roster was on the plane, and 4 players from the youth team.
The number of dead is shifting around too. It seems like the initial reports did not include the crew – ESPN is reporting 36 dead and 1 injured for the team, 7 dead and 1 injured for the plane’s crew for a total of 43 dead and 2 injured. TSN is reporting 43 dead and 1 injured.
Brutal
Been such a terrible, sad summer in the hockey world. Obviously, we’re all thinking of the families and friends of the victims.
Karel Rachunek was one of my favourite players when he was on this team. Surreal to think about.

Full list of former NHLers (I think)
Karel Rachunek (Senators / NY Ranger)
Pavol Dimitira (Senators / Canucks / Wild / Kings / Blues)
Ruslan Salei (Wings / Avalanche / Panthers / Ducks)
Karlis Skrastins (Predators / Avalanche / Panthers / Stars)
Josef Vasicek (Hurricanes / Islanders)
Brad McKrimmon – Head coach (Bruins / Flyers / Flames / Red Wings / Whalers / Coyotes as player, Islanders / Flames / Thrashers / Red Wings as Assistant Coach)
Stefan Liv (Red Wings goalie prospect)
Don't take this as gospel
I’m reading warnings that the published rosters for the team out there might not be 100% accurate.
It was Pavol Demitra =/ sorry for repairing….
Slovakia mourns for his hero!!!

There are rumours that Salei was not on the plane
and was waiting for the team in Minsk.

Yeah, conflicting reports on that one
One Russian sports writer is reporting that, another is reporting that he was on the plane.
The team’s office did claim the entire roster was on the plane, but that could easily be early confusion.
Russian site has posted a list of names of those who were supposedly on the plane
Salei was not on that list.
Still....
With the conflicting reports going back and forth, I won’t consider anything less than a first hand account of speaking with him as definitive.
Salei is now on the official list of the dead
At least I think it’s the official list.

What a sad turn of events.
My heart goes out to all the families and friends of these players. The one that strikes particularly close to home is Demitra…..he was a class act and a hell of a skilled hockey player.
Demitra was a great player
Probably one of the worst trades the sens have ever done was letting him go. He was such a force and inspiration at the olympics in vancouver as well.
Survivor from the team is being reported as Alexander Galimov
Current reports also list 1 crew member as having survived.
The extent of their injuries isn’t being reported, though I would expect they are rather serious.
Wow I am still in shock. This is so sad.
So many young lives.

Terrible to hear.
A gut punch to the KHL and hockey world. I always liked Rachunek and grew to regret the Demitra trade pretty quickly. Thoughts and condolences to the family, friends and fans of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.

Just a horrifying disaster
What can you even say about this?

TSN clip with Sens player reactions

Brendan Bell is mistakenly labelled as a Senator, but his insight was probably the most interesting of the whole clip as he played in the KHL last year.
It's an amazingly small hockey world, isn't it?
A plane crash in a city the size of Winnipeg, 4000 miles from Canada, and we all genuinely feel a loss.
This is terrible for the KHL, and hockey in general...
No a great time to be picky about team bias, but I just read the Puck Daddy story, and felt somewhat insulted that they listed all of the other teams Demitra and Rachunek played for, but didn’t mention the Sens at all. These guys were pretty big pieces of those Sens’ teams, and it felt like a slight on the part of Yahoo… although it wouldn’t be the first time.
Either way, it doesn’t matter really… just something I noticed and felt a reaction to.
