Sens Drop Kraft Hockeyville Game to Jets, 3-1
Hey, did you guys know Colin Greening is from Newfoundland?
Many of you likely did not get a chance to see the start of this 4:00 game between the Ottawa Senators (B team) and the Winnipeg Jets, and trust me, your heart is better off because of it. If not for the stellar play of Alex Auld, this game would have been a laugher before the first period even ended, as the Sens were outshot 16-6 through 20 (no need to adjust your monitors, you read it correctly).
By some miracle, the score was 0-0 after 20 minutes, and the game looked like it was going to be a snoozer. Before the ice had even dried in the second, Mark "Making Pundits Everywhere Look Stupid" Scheifele had banged home a rebound to make it 1-0 (HIS 5TH OF THE PRESEASON PEOPLE). Troy Bodie took a feed from Patrice Cormier and converted it to make the score 2-0, and at the end of the second period, the Sens had managed barely a dozen shots, and it was pitiful.
The end of the second period brought about some antics from Chris Neil. Love him or hate him (or make fun of him and have him score twice against Montreal), its obvious he is willing to do anything to give the team energy, and so he fought to try to energize the team.
It seemed to work as the third period was easily the most enjoyable from a Sens point of view. Mika Zibanejad scored a nice goal on the powerplay, which was followed by more pressure on a second powerplay, before Ben Maxwell's dagger ended the game with six minutes remaining.
Jump with me for Sens Heros, and Killers, and one Senator I cannot make my mind up about!
Sens Hero: Jared Cowen: While the stat line would tell you Jared Cowen was a minus two today, do not let it fool you. Jared continued his incredible push for an opening day roster spot with a great performance. He was physical and used his long reach in the defensive zone, and showed confidence and good instincts at the offensive end. He had one glaring turnover to Evander Kane, but used incredible speed to catch the speedster AND break up the play. Very impressive today, especially once Chris Phillips left the game in the third with back pain.
Sens Hero: Mika Zibanejad: Mikachu REALLY turned up the volume in the third period, and scored a beauty goal, but really seemed to be making things happen offensively when it mattered most. He shows a tendency to go to the net and put his big frame in front of the goaltender on the powerplay, and it benefited the unit that was put together today. He also made several nice plays on the defensive side of the puck, showing the strength of his two-way game.
Sens Hero: Paulrus Maclean: While he did the nice thing and gave Colin Greening a chance to play first line minutes in front of his hometown crowd, once it became apparent that there was no chemistry to be found with Greening, Zibanejad and Alfie, he changed things up. He put together a unit of Hoffman-Zibanejad-Alfie that was simply lights out, and controlled play for the third period and the powerplays in the third. While it was too little too late, it was a great move.
Sens Hero: Alex Auld: As alluded to in the summary, if not for Auld, this game ends without it ever being close. Shame he left with leg cramps, but Mike McKenna looked alright in relief.
Sens Killer: Mark Scheifele: This kid was all over the ice making things happen tonight. I would be shocked if he doesn't stick with the Jets this season. He has a great frame and great hands.
And finally...
Your Call: David Rune-da-blad: Aside from the hilarity that ensued from Bob Cole attempting his name, the game of Magic Number Seven absolutely perplexed me today. As much as he was amazing in flashes offensively today, particularly on the second powerplay of the third period, he was equally awful at points in the defensive end. Too many times I found myself saying "Oh no, David!" (to which I got weird looks, because, well, it sounds like I'm talking to myself.) More than anything, this game showed me David Rundblad needs AHL seasoning. He's almost there, but needs some more work, and I hope he's receptive to fixing some of his deficiencies on this side of the pond.

Rundblad needs seasoning - like Karlsson did.
But give him 10-20 games in the AHL and he’ll adapt. The guy is skilled, and just needs time. With the glut of defencemen we have already, there’s no need to rush him up.
I imagine he'll get more seasoning than that......
(Knock on wood) I don’t see an opening cropping up in 10-20 games and I also don’t see anyone playing poorly enough for that long that they’ll get demoted but not so poorly that Runny gets the call sooner. If that makes sense.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
Yeah - I'm using Karlsson as the yardstick, but Karlsson also had the "benefit" of lack of depth up front.
I’m seeing a scenario where someone either gets traded out of the gate, or at the deadline, or an injury puts someone on the LTIR.
Best kept season
Paired with Chara and Volchenkov….maybe another Beauchemin or Komasarek. Looked great because they played with more talented guys. The mustard is off the hotdog now.
Yeah, while he was a decent defender
Volchenkov definitely was better than him in my opinion. I actually find he is pretty overrated by the Sens.
Still, it is not like he was terrible, he was a serviceable defenceman.
For the record, I was mostly joking about buy out though.

I think that's a little silly
Volchenkov was a third pairing guy in the mold of Carkner before he was paired with Phillips. He didn’t mask anything; he wasn’t the type of defenseman that could cover his partner’s mistakes.

I think Volchenkov was a great asset to the Senators.
But given the choice between him at $4.25 through to 2016 and Phillips for $3.5 until 2014? I’d take Phillips in a heartbeat.
Volchenkov laid down some great hits, and was basically a second goalie out there, but you gotta wonder how long he can keep doing that. Phillips plays positionally well, and he’s a great leader for the next few years until Spezza steps up, Karlsson gets the A full time, and either Cowen/Rundblad/Mikachu get the last A.
I think all things considered, I'd rather have Volchenkov
But that’s just my opinion. I’d rather play Andoid until he drops instead of not signing him out of fear that one day he’ll drop.

Oh yeah
Volchie was great, but that kind of play wears you out so, so quickly. He was already declining IMO when we let him walk, and I may be wrong but I don’t think he’s rebounded.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
He played *only* 57 games with NJD last season
And his GP has gone down every year since 2006/07.

But yeah – you wonder if they can keep finding spare parts to keep him playing or not.
I don't think it was Phillips' talent that made Volchenkov better
It was more Chara leaving and allowing Volchenkov more responsibility,

I agree with this as well
The only benefit Android might have gotten from Phillips is the veteran presence, but past that, I don’t think either player affected the others’ play much. They were just the right pairing together.

Agreed
I don’t have any doubts about his talent… he just needs time to adjust, and we have the depth (in terms of contracts) to let him do it.

Bob Cole
Would it kill the CBC to have a guy who sits in the booth with Bob Cole 10 minutes before puck drop and just runs thru the names on the list so he can hear them once before he goes on air.
how did Cole pronounce Zibanjandadzib
that must have been comedy gold.
also, and much more importantly….wheres the love for Jared “Subway” Cowan as a nickname…come on people!
are you an expert? are YOU an expert? so you're telling me you're an expert then? you're an expert!?
"Subway", like "Magic Number Seven" and the nonsensical "King Robin" will never happen
Sorry. :(

NO!
I detest both MechaKarlsson and Drago and cannot accept it!
I’ll admit, you have converted more people for Drago though. But I can only say nicknames I can understand, and as I have no plan to ever watch Rocky, such is the way of things.

Generous assessment
DaveY, you are a kind person not to issue any Sens Zeros when the team loses 3-1 and gets drastically outshot. Was it just a case of Winnipeg using more NHLers and the result reflecting that, or are you just to nice a guy to single players out for criticism, or perhaps it was a just a general malaise across the whole line-up.
Anyway, thanks for the recap. Lots of good info in there.
That’s the second time I’ve heard the Jets stacked up their lineup against a B-team this preseason. I don’t keep tabs of these things, but is it usually the case that teams try and send comparable teams, or do they just play whoever? I know coaches aren’t going to let other teams dictate what kind of lineup they put out on the ice.

I thought teams generally stacked their teams for fan impact
The first game the Jets stacked their lineup was their first home pre-season game. This one was in the stadium where their farm team will play.
It’s also worth noting that the first time they stacked the lineup, they were playing a home and away against Columbus – at the same time. Both clubs stacked the team for their home game, and sent the B/C/D team on the road.
well... I like to think I'm a nice guy...
but in reality, there were no players who were a detriment to the team yesterday. The fact is, the Jets iced their top two lines and a bunch of players who will play in their bottom six, not to mention Enstrom, Hainsey on the back end, and of course, Pavalec. Considering who we put on the ice, its amazing the game was as close as it was.
