The Ottawa Senators made their first round of cuts today, sending Mark Stone, Matt Puempel, Stefan Noesen, Jakub Culek, and Jordan Fransoo back to their CHL teams. Goalie Matej Matchovsky was also released from his amateur tryout.

Although I didn’t expect any of these guys to make the team, I did kind of expect Puempel and Noesen to get a preseason game under their belts as motivation.

Apparently it was to give them continuity with their junior clubs

Same line of thinking with Silfverberg, just different execution, I guess.

They still might have considered playing ‘em last night in lieu of some of the guys who aren’t cut. I mean, if they knew they were going to cut ’em anyway…

Seems like it doesn’t matter whether it’s a game or a scrimmage or just a drill – there is no protecting anyone from Lessard. :p

I would have liked to see Puempel & Noesen get a game too

But I don’t think it is going to hurt anyone’s development to not get into an exhibition game. The kids sent back were still exposed to NHL calibre players and still had the camp experience. I think it is probably better for their season to get back to their junior camps and get accustomed to their new teammates and back into the junior clubs systems.
It is also probably better for the players that actually have a chance at making the team to have a little more room & ice time to show what they have.
I’m not sure what to make of Prince & Pageau still being in camp. Even with the proximity of their junior clubs, it isn’t like Peterborough is that much further away, but they still sent Puempel back. Have those two shown enough to be worthy of a shot to make the club?

Woah, man. I’m not sure where you’re getting your information. After all, the Sun seems to think it’s Matt Stone… http://www.ottawasun.com/2011/09/20/sens-chop-down-bs-in-town
Weird how they don’t mention Daniel Runblad in the article, though.

Oh, come on now. I notice the article also references Shane Prince as a third-round pick. He was a second. Bruce should remember that— we traded our third for that Kovalev worshipping kid Nikita Filatov

Non, pas du tout

My two cents: If you know that you don’t need them this year. Send them down at the junior level. As much as we are high on Mark Stone, Matt Puempel and Stefan Noesen, if they can’t make the team this year (and they can’t), then send them down and get them started winning games with the still depleted Junior League. Winning is also a great motivator. The more we trim what we can’t fit in(Conboy, sorry man), the more we can try and find out what does and doesn’t fit (Cowen Vs. Rundblad). Remember last year when the lines changed for every preseason game? We started the year in the hole and never got out. Imagine if you will, if we have our final roster for 5 or 6 preseason games. When we start the season, we would grab some victories from teams still trying to fit the pieces and those victories would feel good and put the team in a positive mood.

100% agreement here

Last year’s preseason was stupid, we never played any of our opening day guys together. Hope we don;t make the same mistake again. Hoping for big cuts once BIngo camp is supposed to start

Agreed. Getting lines and systems sorted is critical for a quick start.

I’ve been hoping the organization learned that lesson last year. If we repeat it again this year I would have to conclude that Bryan Murray’s sights are set on the draft rather than competing to make the playoff. I can understand that approach however loosing the BOO would still be a bitter pill to swallow.

Ou..

To use an analogy to explain my previous point. When doing a puzzle, if you want to start right, you separate the end pieces from the rest and try to fit those in together. You don’t try to take all the pieces and try to find where they all fit.
