Oshawa Rookie Tournament, Game 2: Ottawa Senators v. Chicago Blackhawks

Next Game

Chicago Blackhawks
v. Ottawa Senators

Sunday, September 11, 2011
General Motors Centre

Enemy: Second City Hockey

Complete Coverage >

After a good start with a 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins rookies on Saturday, the Ottawa Senators rookies are back at it Sunday afternoon with a game against their peers from the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Hawks rookie squad, who lost their tournament opener 4-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs rookies, features the likes of Mark McNeill, Philip Danault, Dylan Olsen, and Brandon Saad. We'll see how they stack up against Ottawa's best prospects.

The Sens' win over Pittsburgh came in large part thanks to Robin Lehner, who estimated he made about 25-30 saves (shots weren't tracked in the game), and Corey Cowick, who scored two goals. Derek Grant also had a goal and an assist, while Andre Petersson scored on what was supposedly a pretty sick move.

It's more hockey, folks. Just enjoy it!

The ole Rogers broadcast counted the saves at 32 towards the later half of the 3rd. Obviously I wouldn’t trust the numbers too much, but either way it seems like he had a good outing. Looking forward to today’s game!

Was there a live stream online for yesterday’s game ? I’m visiting a friend who has Bell, so no Rogers 22…booo! Also, looking forward to today’s yahoo fantasy draft; however, I pick 20th overall :(

If Sensfan meant that Mika has looked much better in the past, then it would be the bad way.

Andre Petterson, Mika Zibanejad, David Rundblad, Stephane Da Costa and Shane Prince on the ice together isn’t fair.

It is only rookies, but definitely making an early case for 2nd line spot

3rd line or wing

Or he could keep the 2nd line spot, I don’t see him being sent to minors though.

Our centre depth is frightening

Spezza

and then

Regin, Winchester, Konopka, Greening, Da Costa, Z. Smith, Zibanejad

by Ryan Classic on Sep 11, 2011 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Some of those could be moved to make up for winger depth though

Robin Lehner, 0.00 GAA

Machovsky, 6.00 GAA

I’d offer some save percentages, but apparently they don’t keep track of the shots in 2011at this tournament.

More from @coreypronman
Sole negative note on OTT prospects thus far, Rundblad’s puck-moving skills are elite, but still a bit of work in progress in his own end.

by Alexander Calloway on Sep 11, 2011 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

He’s going to take some time to adjust to the smaller offensive zone.

You know

“This player needs to work on his skating” still means he could do a quintuple deke on me before I can even turn around. These kids are good.

@coreypronman
Jared Cowen showed a lot of surprising offensive flashes today. The straight line skating, hands and passing ability were all solid.

by Alexander Calloway on Sep 11, 2011 4:09 PM EDT reply actions

This doesn't surprise me

When Darren and I saw him with Spokane this season, he pretty much dominated every facet of the game, offence and defence.

by Ryan Classic on Sep 11, 2011 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

It's why I think Cowen will start in Ottawa

While Rundblad will spend the better part of the first half of the season in Binghamton. I think Rundblad will play 7-8 game in Ottawa, then be assigned to Bingo for 20-25, then—maybe, if he does well—come back to Ottawa.

With Cowen, it’s easier to keep him in Ottawa. He won’t be expected to play powerplay or offensive minutes, and it won’t be a disservice to him to play him on the bottom pairing.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 11, 2011 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

While I think Rundblad should play in Ottawa all year

I am starting to think the club leans more towards Cowen too. Listening to Murray, he says Cowen is NHL ready, but for Rundblad, Murray usually says he is almost ready.

by Adnan on Sep 11, 2011 10:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Cowen brings a different skill set.

We have three PMDs (Gonch, Kuba and Karlsson). Until one of those three goes, I don’t see how Rundblad fits in since he’d likely just get, 5/6 minutes, and second PP time (if that).

by The Tif on Sep 11, 2011 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I would do:
1st pairing – Gonchar – Karlsson
2nd pairing – Kuba – Rundblad
3rd pairing – Phillips – Lee

I would also not be too scared of trying Rundblad/Cowen together as an NHL pairing and see how they cope.

An Ottawa Senators supporter in Toronto, Ontario. I am cool like that.

by Adnan on Sep 11, 2011 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with the 1st and 3rd pairings.

With Carkner as the alternate for if we need toughness in the lineup. The second is fine, if Kuba plays to his potential. We just need more guys up front to score if we go with that – we’ll be a high scoring team, but offset with giving up a lot of goals.

by The Tif on Sep 11, 2011 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess I haven't seen either of them play

Except the grainy stream today, although I thought Rundblad looked pretty good today. I just feel Rundblad has more experience playing against professionals instead of kids.

But, I think just from the quotes, that Cowen might start up in Ottawa first.

TSN

They have yesterday’s highlights up now, so I’m betting today’s game will be up tomorrow.

Coming out party

Just saw the game on tape. Da Costa, Z’jad and Petersson… and REALLY sucky goaltending.

I still really like Stone and Cowick. It is amazing what awful goaltending does to a game.

Defensively not much to be proud of… but a coming out party for Da Costa and Z’jad.
