Kuba scores OT winner as Senators beat Canadiens 3-2

OTTAWA, CANADA - APRIL 07: Bobby Butler #16 of the Ottawa Senators celebrates his goal against the Montreal Canadiens with his teammates on the bench in a game at Scotiabank Place on April 7, 2011 in Ottawa, Canada. (Photo by Phillip MacCallum/Getty Images)

Things didn't look good in the beginning, but the Ottawa Senators held back the Montreal Canadiens early-game push thanks to some solid play from Craig Anderson. The Habs had 11 shots before Ottawa got their second in the game, but the tide was held back. When Montreal finally did get a puck past Anderson, it was just one, and the Senators were able to keep pace and goals from Jason Spezza and Bobby Butler in the third period gave Ottawa the lead. A last-minute goal by Michael Cammalleri sent the game to overtime, but Filip Kuba -- of all people -- scored early in OT to end the game.

With a win in their final home game of the season, Ottawa played out the stretch with 5-1 in their final six games at Scotiabank Place. The positive signs that have been coming in this late push by the Senators have hurt Ottawa's draft position, to be sure, but they've also given fans something to look forward to during the off-season.

[Boxscore] [Game Summary] [Event Summary] [Faceoff Report]
[Senators TOI] [Play-by-Play] [Shot Report]

Sens Hero: Bobby Butler
Don't worry about it if you missed Butler's goal tonight: It'll be on all the highlight reels. After taking a nice drop pass from Jason Spezza, Butler cut in front of the net, making S.S. Hal Gill look like a pylon in the process, and shot the puck against the grain to the top-corner over Alex Auld's glove to give Ottawa a (short-lived) lead. Butler also had assists on both other goals for Ottawa for the first three-point game in his career.

Star-divide

Sens Hero: Derek Smith
D. Smith led the Senators in shots on goal tonight. He had seven. He played a very strong 17:03 TOI tonight, and didn't look out of place at all. The Canadiens are a team that sort of plays to his strength--they aren't physical, and his speed allows him to keep up with them--but D. Smith looked like an NHL defenceman.

Sens Hero: Jason Spezza
This guy, I tell ya... he's something else. Another two points tonight give him 22P in his last 14GP, which just makes me shake my head in incredulity. His goal was fine. His passes were great. Those blind passes and drop passes that everyone shits all over Spezza for? When they work, they sure look pretty.

Sens Hero: Craig Anderson
It was a slow start for the Senators, but it wasn't for Anderson. As the skaters played some uninspired hockey and were outshot 11-1 to start the game, Anderson was there to keep the Sens in it. He only made 27 saves on the night, but the Sens would have had a hard time if he didn't start the game so well. Anderson is now five wins behind Pascal Leclaire on the Senators' all-time list. Seriously.

Sens Zero: Francis Lessard
I'm not usually interested in piling on Lessard (to be honest, he usually just does what he's supposed to do, so I don't begrudge him that). But tonight, his hit on Tom Pyatt was reprehensible and avoidable, and set his team back with a five minute penalty kill. They killed it, but it was just a bad move all-around.

Sens Killer: Andrei Kostitsyn
Pretty good game for Kostitsyn on Thursday, as he fired a team-high six shots on Anderson and had an assist on Mike Cammalleri's game-tying goal. He didn't dominate, but he was probably the best player for the Canadiens.

Habs Zero: Hal Gill
The top shutdown guy for the Habs was a team-worst -2 on Thursday, and her earned both of those minuses. The first was Spezza's goal, with Colin Greening and Spezza just juggling the puck around him, and the second was Butlers which... well... just watch the highlights below. Gill's performance has got to concern Jacques Martin and the whole Habs team.

Honourable Mentions:
Milan Michalek was at his speediest, and had a couple decent scoring chances. ... Stephane Da Costa got a lot more time in this game with 11:42 TOI, and earned it with three shots and one great scoring chance. ... After shuttling from Binghamton, Colin Greening had a good game on Thursday, and used his size well to drive the net while paired with Butler and Spezza. ... Ryan Shannon was a huge part of the Senators' still-great penalty kill. ... Although he didn't get a point, P.K. Subban started the play that led to the game-tying goal. ... Finally, credit to David Hale for a textbook hit on Yannick Weber: Take away the options by angling him into the boards, cut down the angle, watch his chest instead of the puck, and step up. Hale timed it just right.

Dishonourable Mentions:
Chris Phillips just looked a little... disinterested on the night. He was definitely not in his top form.

I'll take it!

Still don’t really know what else to say about that, but I’ll take it Kuba.

Also, IMO DSmith had a good game, as did Bustler. And the Lessard call was BS. 2 + a 10 min major maybe, but that’s the most it warranted. Even the Habs fans in front of me agreed that it was bullshit.

I was going to give Kuba a dishonourable mention

Even despite the OT winner, but I decided against it.

Would've been poor taste

Aside from his role in the goal on Andy, I saw some reputable plays by Kuba. He was mediocre except for that GA right up until the OT winner.

I actually would have found a way to disagree with that :)

Like AlfieGirl, I didn’t think he was terrible. Yeah, he fucked up the one play, but it wasn’t as egregious as the Kessel disgrace.

I thought that the Lessard call was fine. Completely avoidable, knew he shouldn’t have done it, and he could have very well injured Pyatt on the play. Dangerous hits like that need to be punished.

Oh I agree with calling the play

I just think that a game was ridiculous. Punish it with 10, but a game is overreaction as far as I’m concerned.

Oh Captain, my Captain!

Agreed. But I think the five minute, shot free penalty kill helped the Sens a lot.

There is such a double standard going on with the officiating it’s not even funny. Svatos is crosschecked in the head and knocked out for the season and they don’t even call two minutes. Rosehill is a goon like Lessard, so it’s inexplicable. The next game, Zack Smith is nailed in the head by an elbow, and Philly ends up with the power play and Neil gets a 10, a 5, and a 2. Then last night Lessard is shown the door on a play that could have caused an injury but did not. It should have been a 2 for boarding.

I know, different crews working the games, but they really need to have some consistency. The NHL really needs to work on improving the officiating.

Always good to beat the filthy Habs

And to go out in style at home. If the Islanders lose in regulation tomorrow, everything will be settled for our position.

Then we can all happily cheer for a win against Boston without any consequences.

Wouldn’t it be super awesome if after this decent run we win the lottery and get the freaking #1 pick anyway!?

there was one good thing about that pairing, Kuba made Lee look good! :O but in all seriousness, I dont know if it was Kuba being so bad, but Brian Lee was actually playing pretty decent tonight

Also we are 14-8-1 since the Elliott trade

That’s a good 23 games, or more than a quarter of the season. Granted it was pressure free hockey at least in terms of the standings, but there was still a lot of pressure on the players to earn spots for the 1st time in their NHL careers.

Just to throw it out there, 14-8-1 pace is a 103 points over 82 games. And it’s not like we just had 1 hot streak, we haven’t lost more 2 in a row and haven’t won more 3 in a row.

I honestly can’t wait for next season. To see what Rundblad can do, he’ll screw up of course, but I bet he is going to have a few moments of brilliance ala Karlsson in his rookie season.

I think he's going to struggle early, myself

Watching his highlights on YouTube, I feel like there’s a lot he’s going to have learn he can’t get away with in the NHL — and those lessons are going to be painful.

That is a good mashup

But it doesn’t inspire me lyrically. I don’t think Eye of the Tiger can be improved upon, really. Plus, thinking of Missy Elliott dancing doesn’t give me the same sense of determination as thinking of Rocky climbing a mountain.

Hah!

That’s Jess Hartnell, the voice actor for one Wakko Warner of Animaniacs fame.

He formed metal/pop mashup band Rock Sugar with the backstory that they were a metal band that got stuck on a deserted island for 20 years with only a 13 year old girl’s Pop CD collection, a Hello Kitty Boombox, a crate of batteries, and fifteen cases of schnapps. By the time the band was rescued, they were irrevocably changed.

Even though I was surrounded by Habs fans, it was a blast of a night! I wont say much about Kuba because he scored the GWG but seriously buddy c’mon!! Love this team, love SBP and love this amazing game! Thanks Sens for leaving us for the summer with a fantastic last home game.

Fantastic game. The look on Shannon’s face as he threw his arms around Anderson at the end was priceless…I imagine I would have the same relief to finally have such great goaltending. I would almost hesitate to muck with the brotherhood mentality in the dressing room right now.

Lessard is embarassing. I get not wanting to pick on him, but it’s the same every night from him. He goes out and tries to get in a fight, and when there are no takers he gets dangerous. Why put these non-NHLers on the ice for only a few minutes a game? I agree that he’s only doing what everyone expects him to do, but that’s the problem. Can’t understand what the advantage is of playing him over a prospect from Binghamton.
