This is sort of an extension of this excellent Fanpost. Saw Landeskog against the 67s yesterday. A few observations:
- The guy never sits down. Not sure if he was just trying to impress with Murray in the building, but he stood on the bench the whole time, and was very vocal. He's obviously a future leader. The degree to which this should factor in when making a top 3 pick, I have no idea; I'd probably give more weight to physical factors than attitude.
- He's definitely a factor on the ice, using his big body to create space for his wingers. Good skater, hard backchecker. Didn't finish any of his chances, though the 67s goalie had a killer game and robbed him twice.
- He looks like a man playing against boys out there, but then it is the OHL, and he actually is playing against boys. He didn't push his way into the crease by any means. Anyone expecting him to step into the league and go up against a Pronger right away is probably expecting too much of him.
These are all positive things, but they kind of add up to a Mike Fisher-like player. I'd rather go with the enormous defenseman or natural goal-scorer with a lottery pick and look for hard workers with a good attitude in the 2nd and 3rd round. Landeskog's ceiling seems to be a good 2nd line center. Not a bad pick-up, but certainly not your Stamkos or Hall 1st overall pick.
