Around SBN: Seahawks Trade for TE Kellen Winslow

Wheeeeling and Deeeealing

There seems to be a real appetite for wheeling and dealing as we enter into the draft with more picks than we have ever had in the history of this franchise. The conditional pick from the Campoli deal makes five picks in the top 60 in this draft. What we did with Rundblad, trading a pick for a "more "NHL-ready" prospect can be done again this year to acquire more scoring forwards for the rebuild. We can also add Chris Neil into the package for someone like Cody Hodgson (dream along...).

Nashville's pick is geting worse and worse as the Preds are on a tear since the arrival of MF. What could we get for that pick and a second rounder?

Here's my list of dream guys to chase after:

On offence Hodgson, Ryan Martindale, Emersen Etem, Tyler Toffoli, Charley Coyle, Nino Niederreiter.

On D, Nick Leddy, Colten Teubert, Chris Summers, Travis Hamonic.

Maybe alot of these guys are untouchable and we have to find a more "under-the-radar" kind of guy who is underrated and will rise to the occasion like Rundblad who was only a 17th pick overall.

This year is where our scouting staff will get the ultimate test of how well we can find any hidden gems in this draft.

Teubert was just a huge part of the Penner deal

I don’t see him being moved. Emmerson Etem was on the board when we traded our pick last year for Rundblad, so I don;t think there is much interest in him from the Sens. Nino is probably untouchable, kid was 5th overall just last year. I like where your head is at, but the wish list will likely remain a wish. I say trust the scouting staff to find kids of our own.

It's fun playing armchair GM

Yeah, I know, I should trust the scouting staff… but it’s fun to play armchair GM and find out later how the guys I would have chosen or traded for actually do.

Was Teubert a huge part of the Penner deal or did they just settle for him as a throw-in because they couldn’t get what they were really asking for along with the first rounder.

Reading the Copper and Blue, saw a quote about a journalist asking Steve Tambellini about Teubert’s healthy scratches in OKC…his answer suggested he didn’t know of them. Pretty sure Tambo is much higher on Teubert than most of the rest of the league.

Actually the Nashville pick got better and better

And now returned to around where it originally was after they won 5 out of 6.

I still think Nashville will miss the playoffs.

Trying to be Erik Karlsson's agent since October, 2010.

by Adnan on Mar 22, 2011 10:14 AM EDT reply actions

I really hope they do, but the fact is that they have something like 6 or 7 home games left out of 9 or 10 games. I can’t really see them missing the playoffs considering they are 20-8-7 at home….

Go Flames

Although I remain a Mike Fisher fan, since Nashville could never win the first round if they made it to give us another pick, go Flames Go!!!

I'm definately on board with getting Neiderreiter

El Nino was bar none my favourite player from that draft, (and ok, yes, it could be partially due to his wicked name) and he’s absolutely phenomenally talented. Now, how do we get him?

by Smiles on Mar 22, 2011 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

I don't see any team giving up their high-end young talent except in exchange for high-end young talent

Which is not something we have a lot of, and not something I think we should be giving up except in massively favorable deals.

It pretty much only becomes feasible if we draft Larsson

That would give us an abundance of solid blue-line prospects and allow us to move one.

by Smiles on Mar 22, 2011 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, I agree

And I feel pretty confident that Edmonton’s going to take Larsson #1 overall barring a major injury.

List's a bit strange

I would not say that we need to target any defencemen, period. As for the forwards, Hodgson has a terrible injury history already, Nino is highly coveted, and the rest are highly questionable. Granted Toffoli had a bg year this year, and I like Martindale, but those guys are at least 2 years away. If we’re going to trade for a more NHL prospect I feel like we need to take someone who is undervalued. A guy like Kassian, Schroeder, or Josefson makes more sense to me. Even a guy like Boedker or FIlatov. I like where your head is at, your aim just needs to be adjusted a bit.

we can also take into account teams with cap issues

unloading top end established talent. bmur said specifically that he intends to use our extensive cap space as leverage to take advantage of teams who end up struggling with the cap up to and including the first half of the season. someone like parise, perhaps? hahah

by Caden on Mar 23, 2011 12:08 AM EDT reply actions

Cap issues are those whose play and production doesn’t justify their salary or prevent teams from re-signing/ extending key players. Either they work out with the Sens and re-sign/ extend, like Big Buff in ATL, or get moved around the trade deadline, like Versteeg. This time Samuelsson and/ or Ballard could be on the odd man out.

by Acer9 on Mar 23, 2011 4:41 AM EDT up reply actions

i'm only half kidding

the devils have serious cap issues, they make zero money, and parise is and rfa at the end of this season.. i’m sure they can resign him but only if they’re willing to commit 6m/yr for at least 4-5 years… and is that feasible for new jersey? they’re already at the cap with nothing but plugs expiring next season — 7 players under 1m and hedberg @ 1.5… that doesn’t leave them much wiggle room from the cap hit of 3.4 or whatever he’s making right now.. they’d be stupid to let him go, but at the same time… they could easily pick up both of our first round picks this year for him.

by Caden on Mar 23, 2011 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

oh sorry

and the other half is that i realize how utterly unrealistic it is that this would happen.

by Caden on Mar 23, 2011 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

After next year they get almost $20M in cap relief

It makes sense to me that they’ll stick through another year of being tight to the cap to keep a guy like Parise signed.

Watch out for some Lou action! Roloston will magically disappear off the salary chart list via AHL or a loan to an European team…Lou wouldn’t be Lou if he would find a way to extend Parise while staying below the cap.

Buyout Kubes?

Lots of times at the draft, teams REALLY REALLY want a certain player and they can do funny things to get access to drafting that player. Example: St. Louis really wanted Tarasenko. So even though Rundblad had a hell of a World Junior Series, they overlooked that and traded with the Sens who judged that Rundblad would be ready by this year.

So I picked the players I picked after Niederrieter because I figured they have possibilities of turning into top six forwards… and like Mark said they’ll want top line talent in exchange… so Snow may be stupid sometimes, but he’s not going to give up Niederrieter for our scrap heap.

But you never know… maybe they’re down on Nieder. or maybe he doesn’t get along with the coach or maybe whatever… you never know… dream along…

Every GM always has a wish list. For instance, we’ll find out if Ladislav Smid is REALLY on our wish list if we get rid of Kuba or Gonchar.

In the meantime Brian Lee is finally showing up as a potential fifth or sixth Dman. Now Kuba is the only dud we have back there and I’d put him at about 10th on the depth chart… so how do you spell B-U-Y-O-U-T? Can we really afford to keep him when we have so many developing dmen?

There’s lots of decisions to make.

by Marvellous on Mar 23, 2011 9:15 AM EDT reply actions

Kuba is up at the end of next year, correct?
I think it would be shortsighted (albeit satisfying) to buy Kuba out.
He is getting healthier, and by extension, marginally more valuable. He’s still an NHL calibre defenseman, but has a bad cap hit. I don’t think he’s untradeable, however.
Maybe Murray pulls some strings in the offseason. Maybe he flips him at next year’s deadline, allowing a guy like Cowen or Rundblad to spend most of the season in bingo before getting the call.
Either way, so long as we can unload him at some point in the next calendar year, it’s not worth a hasty buyout and the associated two years of cap hit.

by LeTigre on Mar 23, 2011 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

100% agree

There’s no logical reason to buy out Kuba when he can be a tradeable asset for the team. The second he has no trade value, he should be gone. But that time has not yet arrived.

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

by Mark Parisi on Mar 23, 2011 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

The Kuba Konundrum

Here’s the what’s so about Kubes: He has one more year at $3,7 million. A buyout costs ($3,7 × .667) / 2 = $1.233 million per year for two years. He is untradeable or they would have traded him already. So the choice is $3.7 for another year or $1.233 for two years on a buyout.

They will probably wait until the end of training camp and see how all the new guys and Brian Lee work out before making the decision. IMO, no one is stupid enough to trade for that kind of cap hit for him.

by Marvellous on Mar 23, 2011 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Although he wasn't traded, it doesn't mean the case is closed on moving him

He was coming off of a serious injury leading up to the deadline, so it’s understandable that a deal wasn’t made. Assuming he can stay healthy, there’s a window of opportunity between July and March within which anything can happen.

Let’s say he plays half decent hockey and is healthier next season, and we decide to flip his prorated contract to a contender at the deadline. That means we’d pay 3/4s of his 3.7 salary for his time here (marginally more than the amount of his buyout in the case of a literal deadline deal). It’s not a worst case scenario at all, seeing as we’d get an asset in return for the money spent, and it’s off the books.

Buying him out at the start of the year ensures we pay him about 2.5 million total, including having his money on the books for another year. That’s undesirable, and is literally the worst case scenario.

Not to be a Kuba apologetic, but does anyone remember when he put up an 8 game assist streak to start his tenure in Ottawa? That is still an NHL record for defencemen. He started out on a good tangent here, but he has consistently struggled with health issues.

All I’m saying is that if we pray real hard for him to stay in good shape over the summer, he’s still got some gas left in the tank, and could still hold some value.

by LeTigre on Mar 23, 2011 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Forgot this part...

Or Wave Kuba and hope someone takes him for half of his salary.

Kuba for Rolston

A trade I’d think the Devils would do.

by TheGuineaPig on Mar 23, 2011 9:00 PM EDT reply actions

They are looking for a puck moving defenceman. Although I think they’d prefer if he moved the puck towards the opposition’s net instead of into his own.

Enough excuses

A deal like Kuba for Rolston might be just what the doctor ordered here… an overblown contract for an overblown contract. Then we give Rolston a leadership role and WOW, he becomes a player again and scores 25 goals (dream along).

I’m just saying… there are options when you have a ton of cap space. Rundblad is playing close to 30 minutes a game in the playoffs in Sweden, and I’d just like to give him and Cowen some ice time instead of the pokey and mistake prone Kuba who generally turns whatever partner he has into an inept Dman as well. Can you tell that I want to get rid of Kuba?

Kuba has had plenty of time to recover from his injury. Everybody who plays in the NHL was once a good player for a few games, but what can you do for me NOW? Players either have results or excuses… and it’s enough excuses already!!!

by Marvellous on Mar 24, 2011 7:54 AM EDT reply actions

Rolston has already become a player again

His second half has been great.

They might accept Kuba for Rolston, yes. But what’s the incentive for us there? Assuming Kuba rebounds with a relatively healthy season next year, we might be able to get an asset that would contribute to the future of our team—when we will need it, and when we’ll be competing—instead of someone who’ll be gone at the end of the year for nothing.

Getting rid of Kuba, in and of itself, is only a good move to fans because they’ve come to hate the guy. To a degree, I really don’t like him, either. But we’ve got to be taking a more long-term view here.

I don’t hate Kuba. On certain nights he is almost a useful player. Peter asks for a long range viewpoint… well from a long range viewpoint what’s the point of having him on the team? His offensive PP exploits are in a previous life, as others have forged ahead in the depth chart in the PP department, and with the addition of Rundblad and Cowen, Kuba becomes number 10 on the depth chart.

He was slow before his injury and now he has “turtle” status. He doesn’t hit anyone, and he regularly makes his partners look bad. Hanging onto him will turn into a late round pick at best if anything. We are presently in the “developing of dmen” business, and when training camp starts we ramp up trying to develop our defence as fast as possible.

Kuba is a square peg and all we have is round holes. I wish he’d prove me wrong, but I wouldn’t bet even a loony on it.

Lastly, except in rare occasions, I just don’t believe in signing expensive Free Agents. Teams end up overpaying and so it just isn’t worth it most of the time, unless you grab someone cheaply and give him a role. When you make a mistake on a $3.5 million dollar player or more, you have yourself a 10 ton anchor around your neck having a player who doesn’t contribute and can’t be moved. When I look at the FA list this year, I shudder.

You don’t see the best organizations like the Red Wings signing FAs and there is a reason for that. The only recipe for success is to make sure you have elite goaltending and then build tremendous depth through the draft and with crafty signings of overlooked players.. Then you’re in a position to exchange assets in a clever manner and build a contender.
