Lottery Pick Update: February 17, 2011
It's been over three weeks since the last Lottery Pick Update, and while the teams in lottery pick position haven't changed, the order has. On January 24, the Ottawa Senators were sitting 27th in the NHL with a 10.7% chance of getting the 1st-overall pick. Today, the Senators are 29th and have an 18.8% chance of getting that first pick.
Here's how the standings shake down today:
| Team | Rank | Record | P% | Odds | Last-5 | Jan 24 |
| Edmonton | 30th | 17-32-8 (42p) |
.368 | 48.2% | 2-3-0 |
29th (-1) |
| Ottawa | 29th | 18-30-9 (45p) |
.395 | 18.8% | 1-3-1 |
27th (-2) |
| NY Islanders |
28th | 21-29-7 (49p) |
.430 | 14.2% | 4-1-0 |
28th |
| New Jersey |
27th | 23-30-4 (50p) |
.439 | 10.7% | 5-0-0 |

| Toronto | 26th | 25-27-6 (56p) |
.483 | 8.1% | 3-1-1 |

| Florida | 25th | 24-25-7 (55p) |
.491 | 0% | 2-2-1 |

Edmonton Oilers - 17-32-8 (42p), .368

The Edmonton Oilers faced off against the Ottawa Senators last Saturday in the battle between the worst teams in the National Hockey League. Had they won, the Oilers would have had an identical record to the Senators (though still in last place by virtue of actually having shootout wins). Unfortunately, the Oilers couldn't hold off the burgeoning superstardom of one Bobby Butler. It's also helped that goalie Nikolai Khabibulin was on a 13-game regulation losing streak. That streak hit 14 games before Khabibulin finally won against Dallas on Tuesday night. |
29th |
Ottawa Senators - 18-30-9 (45p), .395
|
|
How bad are the Senators right now? On January 24th, when the first Lottery Pick Update was published, they had a 17-25-7 record and were already in a 1-8-3 tailspin since Boxing Day. Since January 24th, they've gone 1-5-2. That's a 20-game run with a 2-13-5 record - 9 of a possible 40 points (.225). At that rate, the Senators would have 8 wins in an 84-game season. The inaugural 1992-93 Senators had 10 wins. |
28th |
New York Islanders - 21-29-7 (49p), .430
|
![]() |
Since the last update, the Islanders have gone 6-4-0. They're on a 4-game win streak where they've scored 24 goals. After playing 38:06 on February 13, the newly-acquired Al Montoya became the sixth Islanders goaltender to suit up - two more than any other team. Oh, and Michael Grabner set a new team record for most consecutive games with a goal by a rookie (6 games, 10 goals), and has 16 goals in the 15 games since January 15. He also has 5 assists, but those don't matter. |
27th |
New Jersey Devils - 23-30-4 (50p), .439
|
|
The Devils are 11-1-1 in their last 13 games (23 of 26 possible points, .885). Ilya Kovalchuk is on an 8-game point streak, and although he is +7 during that stretch, he's still -22 on the season (good for 833rd-overall). While making the playoffs is the definition of a stretch, the Devils are sure making it interesting. |

Surprise rookie goaltender James Reimer has gone 8-4-1 with a 2.39 GAA and .928 save percentage since making his first start on January 1. The Leafs have been putting up more wins than not lately, and it may be enough to pull them out of the lottery pick position if either or both of Colorado and Florida fall any further. The only thing keeping Colorado and Toronto from having identical records after Wednesday night is that the Avalanche held on until overtime to lose to the Pittsburgh Penguins. |

Also Nashville is currently 4th but only ONE point ahead of 9th
If Nashville misses it, that is the 14th pick at worst.
Trying to be Erik Karlsson's agent since October, 2010.
Standings as of Monday
As of Monday of this week the Eastern standings did not change other than Ottawa dropping a spot. It’s really amazing to think that all these teams streaking have not made any difference. I will update next Monday as I have a spreadsheet going and I update every Monday . The Western conference had a lot of movement but that’s because eight teams are within 2 points of each other which other.

Well the eastern conference sucks
The Leafs are now within 6 points of a playoff spot and they are still 2 games under .500

Other than Philly
Every other team has been inconsistent all season long. They seem to go on the same streaks together which makes no sense at all except that the playoff team are loosing against non playoff teams like the streaks that New Jersey and the Islanders are on.

Go Toronto
I really hope that the Leafs will pass a few more teams (Colorado would be a prime candidate). If we can’t get Toronto’s pick from Boston somehow then I hope it is as late as possible and certainly outside the top five. Come on Leafs!!
History is made
Would this be the only time in NHL history that a team in the playoffs gets two top five picks?

Nope
NYI had 1st (DiPietro) and 5th (Raffi Torres) in 2000.
Those two certainly panned out

If we can't get Toronto's pick, which is extremely highly likely, then I approve of Toronto jumping Colorado
My two teams may suck this year, but at least they’re both heading towards top-5 picks. It’s a small solace, but it makes me optimistic about the future.
What I will find interesting to watch is who Colorado takes if they land the 4th pick. They need a defenceman, but Larsson is not going to be available. If the Senators or Islanders take Landeskog, then the two remaining players are Couturier and Nugent-Hopkins, both centres. That’s a position Colorado is stacked at (Duchene, Stastny, O’Reilly, and Hishon waiting in juniors).
Okay, nobody else here cares about this, but it’s something I think about.

Who says that Couturier or RNH will continue to play center in the NHL? That’s another issue to consider. Colorado can also trade up or down. You have a bunch of solid puckmoving Dman in the pipeline e.g. Elliot or Barrie & somebody knocking on the door in the NHL like Stoa. These prospect could be included in a trade up.
Trading the lottery pick for a legit player is another route that Colorado can explore. You just gotta make the best out of the situation, if your targeted prospect (Larsson) is gone.
Colorado-Ottawa trade
If Ottawa lands the top pick and Colorado is say 4th, then maybe a deal could be made. Say, #4 plus a good forward prospect for #1(Larsson). That might work well for both sides.
That would be so surreal for me
Those teams never make a trade with one another. The closest I can remember is when Ottawa shed Tyler Arnason after his disastrous post-deadline stint, only to have him sign with Colorado. Crap I hated that guy.

Toronto is only 6 points out of the playoffs.
Typical leafs. i think we all know they’re going to finish 9-10th
Of course, but we want that, mainly because we don’t want Boston getting anymore primo draft picks to supplement an already good team.

Make the playoffs even...
I’d be happy to see the Leafs grab that eight playoff spot. It would be a lot easier to work out my playoff pool. Draft lots of Flyers!!
