Silver Nuggets: Kuba on IR and out 3-4 weeks

Filip Kuba's trade value could take a serious dive after being placed on injured reserve. (Photo by Abelimages/Getty Images)

It is a big day in Ottawa as it opens its new IKEA store to huge crowds with thundersticks amid a police presence. Bless you Ottawa, you are adorable. While I am laughing at your little town, fear not, I still like the city. Making fun of my home town can commence...now!

Back to hockey, news came out this morning that Filip Kuba (FIHL-ihp KOO-bah) has been placed on injured reserve and will be out 3-4 weeks. This is a big blow to the defence as Kuba will have to be replaced for over a month. On the other hand, the injury happens just in time for Ottawa not having to make a decision on Matt Carkner. Carkner will play for Binghamton tonight and then join the team tomorrow in New Jersey. He won't play tomorrow but will be available for Saturday's home game against Vancouver.

Kuba's injury means that Jared Cowen will likely continue to play on the top pairing with Erik Karlsson as no one else seems capable of handling that duty. It also means that David Rundblad is unlikely to be sent down to the AHL. One of Rundblad, Carkner and Lee will probably alternate in and out.

With the trade deadline on 27 February, and Kuba not expected to be back until early to mid January, this will definitely lower his trade value. Keeping his injury history in mind and the fact that he will need time to get back to his early season form, it's a huge blow to getting decent value for him. On the other hand, this should allow Matt Carkner to get some games and increase his trade value as I don't see him having a future here past this season.

General Sens News
  • Erik Karlsson and Jared Cowen seem to enjoy playing with each other and they each think they complement the other well. Karlsson adds that he trusts Cowen and is confident in his abilities. That is the key difference for me between Karlsson playing with Chris Phillips and Cowen. While both Cowen and Phillips are defensive guys at the moment, when Karlsson is playing with Phillips, I don't think Karlsson feels as confident rushing up the ice and trying to make things happen. (Ottawa Senators)
  • Paul MacLean credits the Senators third period scoring to never giving up, and continuing to try for the full 60 or 65 minutes. (Ottawa Sun)
  • Peter Regin is happy to be around the players again and hopes his injury problems are finally behind, but adds that one never knows. (Ottawa Sun)
  • Ottawa's success is in large part to those who played in Binghamton last year: Kaspars Daugavins, Zack Smith and Erik Condra, or Ottawa's third line. (Senators Extra)

Awful news about Kuba

As much as Sens fans have loved to hate him over the last year or two, he’s been one of the team’s best defenders in the early going, and will be hard to replace.

Bad news for our hopes for the season, good news for development

Let’s face it, if Kuba were back in, he’d bump Jared Cowen back to the second unit. I’d like to see Cowen play through the adversity. He’s going to make some mistakes on the top pairing (see the badly handled 2 on 1 leading to Washington’s overtime goal) and he’s going to learn from those mistakes. And if it takes Kuba a little longer to return, then by the time he comes back, maybe Cowan will be more ready to be on the top pairing full time, and BM can Deadline Deal Kuba without being accused of completely writing off the season. One way or another, Kuba is not likely to be here next year, and I’d rather not lose him for nothing on a rebuilding team, even if we are surprisingly playoff hopefuls.

On the contrary - good news for the team

If he is back and plays well, but his trade value is reduced due to injuries history, Murray may not want to trade him or a 5th rounder… then we keep him and make a playoff push. We finish 6th, and sweep Florida in first round 4-0 with Kuba contributing on both ends of the rink and Alfredsson leading the team in scoring. Then we face Boston in round 2 and Tyler Seguin misses a breakfast twice!! and is a healthy scratch for both, with Ottawa winning the series 4-2 behind stellar performance by Craig Anderson and not so Vezna-worthy play by Tim T. Now anything can happen after that, I know, but this Kuba injury is a blessing in the sky as it guarantees us run deep into the playoffs and playing Penguins in the conference finals. Best news of the day!

I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.

I love it

But ya if we are in a playoff position in February 2012 I dont want to be the big sellers of 2011 I think this could be a blessing in disguise

by Beanster on Dec 7, 2011 2:17 PM EST up reply actions

You didn't finish the story!

In the conference finals, the Sens go up against the Penguins, where Karlsson and Rundblad drive opposing defenceman insane passing the puck back and forth between themselves, setting up Michalek and Z Smith on breakaways when they get bored. Alfredsson fittingly scores the series winner in Game 6, sending the Senators to their second Stanley Cup final appearance.

In the finals, the Sens meet the Detroit Red Wings. Teacher takes on Student as Paul Maclean and his Moustache taken on his old organization. However the youth and tenacity of the Senators prevail as they tire out Detroit in 5 games, including 2 gutsy come-from-behind victories.

Vancouver burns as Ottawa plans the parade down Wellington Street, being only first Canadian team to win the cup since the incoming frosh were born.

True enough

Out of every injury comes an opportunity to someone else, so this opportunity—at least for now—is falling mostly to Jared Cowen, and also to David Rundblad and Brian Lee to a certain extent.

I'm starting to feel bad for Kuba

The look on his face earlier in the season when he was asked about last year really hit me… and now, just as he’s really starting to get back into the swing of things, he comes down with yet another injury.

by Peter Raaymakers on Dec 7, 2011 1:15 PM EST reply actions

At least he got a training camp this year...

Lots of players are able to bounce back from injuries alright, but it’s infinitely harder when their injury keeps them out of training camp. Hopefully he’s able to come back strong in January.

We can always go to Toronto....

…its just like New York City but without all the stuff!

God bless you, Liz Lemon.

Oh also Go Sens. Go Adnan. Go Silverseven and may God continue to bless Karlsson.

I had to share this about Brian Elliott

So Brian Elliott wasn’t the golden boy in Ottawa, he was never part of the future, he was always just a temporary fix, doorstop… Who could predict that he is going to be that good!!!? I mean he never posted numbers like that before, displayed inconsistency and besides his work ethic nothing could suggest he is going to be a star and talk of the league one day… but one day, almost two years ago, we also had him playing out of his mind, here in Ottawa, for a whole month (http://www.studyofsports.com/2010/02/12/surprising-senators-heating-up-at-the-right-time/):

Brian Elliott went on to be the NHL’s first star of the week for the second last week of January, and followed that up with being named the second star for the last week of that month. Frankly, I don’t know what to think about Brian Elliott, who looks like a completely different goalie these days. He has basically turned around absolutely everything that was wrong with him earlier in the season. He’s in the right position at all times, he’s no longer giving up the rebounds he had become notorious for, and most importantly he’s not giving up any soft goals. I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. Perhaps most surprising of all, he continue to do it without a goaltending coach of any kind.

Whould you want to get him back? Could we sign him as a backup before this season start? $600k this year for St. Louis. Why Auld?

I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.

by TaBu on Dec 7, 2011 2:18 PM EST reply actions

Elliot has the skills but must be weak mentally

He works best labelled as a back-up…any 2nd string tender has lower expectations and he seems more relaxed in net…his best season he was supposed to be our backup last year he flopped as our starter

Also he was terrible under real pressure in the 2010 playoffs.

As long as he is the ‘back up’ he is good….

by Beanster on Dec 7, 2011 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

This is what I wonder too.

He’s a good backup, but I wonder how he’ll play when he inevitably cools down and loses a few.

by The Tif on Dec 7, 2011 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

It's easy to say that now

But did you want him as a backup before the season started?

As a back up...

I never had anything against him really, and I am definitely not saying “I told you so”, it is just funny that we had him play just as well here, but it was not perceived the same way, because our sample size was much bigger than St. Louis. The team was very inconsistent as so was Elliott. But to answer your questions – yes, I would have taken him before Auld, especially for $1M that Auld is making. However I think new scenery, lower expectations, different coach helped him and good for him, Let’s not forget we traded him and it might be weird to sign him back. However I do not think there were any hard feelings…
Would be nice to have goaltender controversy again in Ottawa, NO? :) With team playing so well and exceeding expectations we are so forgiving these days to our GKs even on nights when they do not stand on their head and win us one…, and good for us! :)

I can just hear it

Brian Elliott’s Agent: Brian, Bryan Murray is on the phone, he’s offering you a two-way $650K 1 year deal.
Brian Elliott: Is Bruce Garrioch dead?
Brian Elliott’s Agent: I haven’t heard or read anything like that no.
Brian Elliott: So why are you calling?

Common sense is the most evenly distributed quality in all the world.

by havey03 on Dec 8, 2011 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

Elliott has been good in the past for spells. This has just been the longest spell he’s gone. He has shown he can play elite calibre hockey, he could just never do it for more than 5-10 game spells.

He would never have come back to Ottawa after last year. He was made the scapegoat in a lot of ways, and how the season ended with him continuing to play poorly and Ottawa turning it around to a degree made it extra unlikely. Maybe St Louis has a good goaltending coach, or maybe he swapped trainers in the summer and was able to improve his technique. Odds are neither would have happened in Ottawa.

by modsuperstar on Dec 7, 2011 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

It's all psychological

When the opponents score early on Anderson, our players are confident about coming back. With Elliott, that comfort level was not there. In St L, Elliott has a fresh start and his teammates are not familiar with his Ottawa bad experience, so his confidence level is different.

I think at the NHL level, talent is pretty even

The question of success becomes, “Are you able to do the little things consistently?”

For me, that’s how a player like Alfie becomes Alfie. He knows he’s not the best at anything, so he focuses on the mental aspect of the game and uses that as his advantage. That comes less easily to a player like, say, Kovalev, because their talent usually lets them succeed without maximum effort.

Do I believe Elliott has the talent to be an NHL starter? Yep. Do I believe he has the consistency to be an NHL starter? Nope.

His relationship with the team had become toxic

There was simply no trust between Elliott and the players in front of him. I’m positive that if Elliott were in Ottawa instead of St. Louis, he wouldn’t be putting up numbers nearly as impressive as he’s put up.

Also, he’s had runs almost as impressive as this one before. They’ve faded. I’ve never questioned Elliott’s ability to play well in streaks, but an NHL team needs their goalie to play well consistently. Time will tell if Elliott’s able to do that this time around, because he hasn’t in the past.

When is Regin back?

Excited for a full forward lineup I see:

Michalek-Giggles-Greening
Foligno-Regin-Alfie
Condra-Smith-Rooster
Neil-Winchester-Other

Other: Butler ZKon Filatov

Maybe at home to Pittsburgh next Friday the 16th? Don’t play until the 20th at home to Buffalo after that.

I'm a believer...

I’m a believer that Filatov needs to be put on 4th line for 20 games and get his 9 minutes every night. As much as I like Butler (on a good night), something tells me that Filly will do rebounds once he gets the taste of scoring… but then I also trust Murray will handle him and find a spot for him or trade him to KHL for future considerations (2 mint bonbons and a bag of marbles) :)
Guy just needs everyone get off his back and to be treated like a “rookie” that he is…

Why does Karllson have no confidence in Phillips?

Is it because Karllson knows that when he gives the puck away (3-4 times a game) that Phillip will accidentally score on Anderson?
