Alfredsson's 400th is overtime winner as Senators beat Flames 4-3
[Corsi] [Head-to-head] [Zone starts] [Scoring Chances]
That was incredible wasn't it? What looked like another ugly game early on, ended on a very joyous note. The Calgary Flames took a 1-0 lead just 23 seconds into the game on a goal that went off Kyle Turris' skate. Six minutes later it was 2-0 on a power play goal and it was 3-0 before the end of the period on a goal deflecting off Filip Kuba. Shots were 15-15 and the scoring chances were 10-7 in Ottawa's favour according to those linked above. But as has been the case this season, the Senators were simply not getting any goaltending.
Alex Auld was pulled at the start of the second period and Craig Anderson was in. Nick Foligno got the Senators on the board at the 3:34 mark of the second, although the play was under review before being confirmed as a goal. Zack Smith made it a one goal game at the 12:01 mark on a beautiful shot from the right wing. The score was 3-2 in Calgary's favour, but all the momentum was with Ottawa. Shots were 14-7 for Ottawa and the scoring chances were 9-4 for Ottawa.
Early in the third period, Erik Karlsson took the puck down the right wing and then the following happened. Karlsson shot the puck, quickly got his own rebound, skated around the net and shot the puck into the net before the goaltender could get back in position. It was simply an outstanding goal from an outstanding player. The score would remain 3-3 at the end of regulation. The shots were 12-10 for Ottawa and scoring chances 7-5 for Ottawa in the third.
In overtime, Karlsson drew a penalty from Rene Bourque. What followed was historic. On the 4 on 3 power play, the Senators had plenty of shots but hadn't been able to score. Eventually Alfredsson took a feed from Karlsson and blasted the puck into the net for his 400th career goal. Erik Karlsson literally started jumping up and down to celebrate while the rest of the Ottawa players also jumped on the captain. Incredible finish.
The final shot count was 49-32 for Ottawa and the scoring chances were 34-16 also in Ottawa's favour.
Sens Hero: Daniel Alfredsson
The captain knows how to do it in style doesn't he? He scored his 1000th career point with a hat trick. His 400th career goal would be the overtime winner in a game the club trailed 3-0. It wasn't a particularly good overall game by Alfie, but what a way to finish it.
Sens Hero: Erik Karlsson
Karlsson scored the tying goal on a beautiful individual effort as well as drawing the penalty and getting the primary assist on the game winner. A couple of times he did lose the puck causing a rush, but he skated back hard every time to break up the play. Karlsson played 27:12 on the night and had 8 (!) shots.
Sens Zero: Alex Auld
A couple of the goals may have been deflected, but the goaltender's job is to make the saves. Auld did not and got the pull.
Honourable mention: Craig Anderson
Anderson played the last two periods and didn't face a ton of action, but he gave the Senators a chance to win the game by shutting the door the rest of the way. He's now 4-0 this season in games following those where he was pulled.
Other Notes
- Erik Karlsson's two points lifted his season total to 35 points in 38 games. After struggling to score goals for most of the season, the shots are finally going in for him, this was his third goal in five games. He is on a 76 point pace.
- Jason Spezza did not get any points but he fired 7 shots on net and his dekes were successful on more than one occasion tonight. He was certainly very entertaining to watch.
- Bobby Butler played only 9:25, the lowest of any Senator.
- Zenon Konopka was 7 for 7 in the face-off circle.
- The Senators stay in ninth place, but are in a four-way tie for sixth place on 41 points. New Jersey has two games in hand while Toronto and Winnipeg have one game in hand.
- This was the second time the Senators have won a game that they trailed by three goals. The first time was a 5-4 shootout win that they trailed 4-1 against the New York Rangers.
- The win was also Ottawa's fourth when trailing after two periods, tied for second most in the NHL. It was also the sixth time they have won a game while trailing at some point in the third period.

It was a beauty
Saw it coming… Alfie put in a vintage number 11 one timer…. Happy to see it happen live

Oh man, what a night!
At the start of overtime I asked my buddy, “Who do you like in overtime?” He said, “I’ll take Karlsson”. I said, “I’ll take Alfie.”
The crowd in my section had been chanting Alfie since towards the end of the 3rd period, and by the time Ottawa’s powerplay in OT came up anticipation was high. When Alfie’s 3rd one-timer of the powerplay got by Irving and went in, the crowd’s explosion was unlike any I’d experienced before. Epic horn, Nightbreak. Could not have been better. Alfie chants ensued for the remainder of the post-game until after Alfredsson went back into the dressing room following his accepting the 1st Star. What a brilliant night to be at Scotiabank Place!
Other thoughts:
- Great work by Anderson for being the stabilizing force after Auld completely shat the bed.
- Kyle Turris had another strong game at both ends of the ice.
- The victory was a real team effort. The Paulrus seemed to be spreading the ice time around, and I think Ottawa’s fresh legs really turned the tide in the second half of the game as Calgary was on the second game of playing on back-to-back nights.
- Can we just godfather offer Karlsson an 8 year 4.5 mil contract already?
- NOBODY (!!) fucks with the Neil, Konopka, Daugavins line.
- Alfie! Alfie! Alfie! Alfie!

And another thing...
Great work on the “Alfie’s 400th Goal” retrospective they played. It looked great on the new screen.

What a goal by Alfie!
I don’t think there’s another team in the NHL who’s captain is more beloved than Alfie is with the Sens.
WOO HOO!!! GO SENS GO!!!
ALFIE! ALFIE! ALFIE!
Well he is definitely among the old guard of captains. Lidstrom is still kicking around so he’d have to get consideration, but that’s about it.

True. Iginla and Alfie share a lot in their off-ice contributions.
They’ve both been huge for their communities.
I still can't believe the Paulrus didn't start Andy.
Also, what is up with Auld?! That 3rd goal was absolutely the worst thing I’ve seen all year! No traffic and he barely moves until the puck is already in the net.
Am I the only one who thinks the goalie coach (Warmsley?) might need a one-way ticket outta town? Elliott, Auld, and even Andy has struggled at times this year.

4 Games in 6 Nights...
…and this is the out of conference one. It makes sense to me.

Well, firing Eli Wilson did propel the Senators to a franchise best winning streak.
But I do think it’s premature to call for Wamsley’s head. After all, he works with Lehner too, and Lehner fared quite well under his tutelage when it mattered most last season.
The part that got me was I saw somewhere Anderson’s post getting pulled stats. He was 3-0 this season with a good GAA. Then tonight plays 2 periods, no goals and gets the W. It’s good to know he bounces back strong and does care when he gets pulled.
3 games in 4 nights, whatever. Anderson is supposed to be your horse, ride him. He’s the guy they signed to carry the load, so if it comes down to 3 in 4 nights, just play him.
by modsuperstar on Dec 31, 2011 9:40 AM EST up reply actions
MEH.
Andy’s here for another three years and they probably won’t be able to trade him with those numbers. Play him as best it seems, the media have his back (Garrioch got a sliver of a backbone criticizing him the other day) and what is he going to do, ask for a trade? Not going to happen…
Dare I say…WIN AND YOU’RE IN?

The nuclear option would be to trade him to anyone who will take him for anything
Then trade Lehner and whatever else is required to Vancouver for Schneider.
But that’s assuming we’re trying to win now, which we are not.

It's probably more of a sample size issue
One would think that if Anderson was so mentally tough or whatever he wouldn’t be playing so poorly.

Didnt watch the game
…but from the highlights I noticed:
Gonchars very nice pass on Folignos goal.
Turris keeping the space infront of the net clear on Karlssons… Wich also draws the D-man so he cant get in Karlssons face. Good work.
The first goal is unlucky, but if Auld had moved faster/payed more attention it coud have been saved. On the third goal he just looked bad.
Hero-Zero Count
With that excellent recap and a big milestone, Alfie now moves up to second on the Hero-Zero chart, only one point below Michalek. Well deserved!
I couldn’t watch the game, being down in deep south Georgia, but Adnan captured the excitement. Sounds like it was a real emotional roller coaster what with Auld bombing out, being down 3-0, then clawing back, and finally Alfie notching the big one.
Calgary, setting other team's records since...forever.
Alfredsson got his 400th against them.
Sundin got his 500th against them. (Mikka Kiprusoff)
Michel Goulet got his 500th against them. (Jeff Reese)
Bryan Trottier got his 500th against them. (Rick Wamsley)
Pat Verbeeg got his 500th against them. (Fred Brathwaite).
Calgary Flames…YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU SUCK!
:p

How the hell did I not notice Pat Verbeek had that good of a career? I would have never guessed he was a 500 goal/1000 point guy.

WOO HOO!
Congrats Alfie, we could not have a better captain! Wow, another 3-0 deficit that they won. You know what I love about this team? They simply will not go away and lose the game. They don’t stop.
I also found it fitting
that the future greatest Senator passes to the current greatest Senator to seal the milestone and victory. Erik Karlsson, you are a beautiful hockey player.
"I couldn't score in a brothel...couldn't finish a sandwich"

Karlsson's face when Alfie scored was priceless.
He looked like a kid who just got the greatest Christmas present ever.
His hopping up and down was amazing too.

This is clearly a group of guys that enjoys playing together.
The whole celebration looked very genuine and full of joy.

Even when we were down 3-0 I had a feeling we'd win
I think we outplayed the Flames in the first, to be honest. As for Alfie’s goal, you knew it was coming. Beautifully scripted game.
You must have been watching a different first period
Only time the Sens played well in the 1st was when they managed to get set up in the Calgary zone. The rest of the period (which was most of the period) Calgary was badly outskating them.

This season!?!?!
yeah this season is crazy…my gf wanted to throw on a movie and I almost decided to just throw on a movie once we were down 3-0 but I couldn’t put the movie on because you can’t count this team out. Watched the rest of the game and they end up winning.
its a beautiful thing to be treated to the games our team has played this season.
Props to MacLean
for not letting get too out of hand and giving Anderson a shot. Props to Anderson as well.
Go luck yourself.

That has certainly not been one of MacLean’s strengths this year, and I was going a bit crazy when he didn’t pull Auld after the third one. I understand that he’s trying to save the guy a bit of embarrassment, but sometimes I think MacLean is too concerned with that. In addition, he his lack of timeout usage has exacerbated this problem. That string of getting two or three quick goals scored on us in early December tells the whole story. I like a coach who lets players play, but I’d also like MacLean to get a quicker trigger finger on pulling a guy who’s obviously off his game or calling a timeout to let him compose himself.
ALFIE! ALFIE!
Was at the game! So depressing to start, but they never quit. Anderson looked composed, his bounce-back games are outstanding.
Also, have fun sharing this video at any parties tonight.
I laughed really, really hard. Hopefully it hasn’t been posted already.
what's hilarious?
…the hard on you guys have for Karlsson is hilarious.
