Condra nets two as Senators beat Sabres 4-1
Whenever Buffalo and Ottawa meet up, you can count on a good hockey game. The matchup between these two Northeast Division rivals has produced many close games and some of the most memorable moments in modern Senators history. Tonight saw a number of factors that led fans to believe it would be a good game -- the return of Sergei Gonchar and Filip Kuba, the first ever NHL matchup between the Brothers Foligno, and the Senators debut for Kyle Turris.
Instead of a classic, we got a dud. The 4-1 score is probably the most exciting thing about it.
Ottawa got on the board first after Zack Smith potted in the rebound from a Chris Neil (!!) breakaway midway through the first period. The play also gave Matt Carkner his first assist of the season. The Sabres tied it up in the second on a Jordan Leopold powerplay goal -- a goal that Craig Anderson probably wishes he could have back.
The Senators controlled the bulk of the play during the game (shot were 39-23 in favour of the Sens), and finally took the game over in the third period. It started as Kyle Turris earned his first point as a Sen after his hard wrister was too much for Miller to handle, giving Turris a rebound he slipped to Erik Condra for an easy goal. That was followed by a late powerplay goal from Erik Karlsson off a gorgeous Daniel Alfredsson feed in close, and finally an empty-net goal from Condra to close out the game at 4-1.
Sens Hero: Erik Condra
Some were questioning Condra's inclusion in the top-six, but he was the straw the stirred the drink on Ottawa's second line tonight. Condra showed great speed and surprising hands as he blasted five shots on net, including two goals.
Sens Hero: Jason Spezza
Spezza only finished with a single assist, but he was the biggest offensive threat on either team tonight. He had some dazzling dekes, led all forwards with over 23 minutes of ice-time, won 55% of his draws, and had 4 shots on net to accompany his assist.
Sens Hero: Chris Neil
Neil had a great night, taking no dumb penalties while playing a very physical game: he finished with 10 hits, 6 more than anyone else on the ice. Not only that, but he led all players with 6 shots on net.
Turris Watch:
The Ottawa Senators' newest player had just over 16 minutes of ice-time tonight, finished +2, and was dynamite in the face-off circle, winning 7 of 9 draws. He was solid in all three zones, and made a couple of key defensive plays -- notably saving a probable goal when Sergei Gonchar turned the puck over right in front of Craig Anderson. Turris assisted on the game-winner with a great rebound pass to Erik Condra, and seemed to get better as the game went along.

Also on pace to be traded 8 more times
How 49 assists? 48 games left, 7 played – 1 assist. He is on pace to 8 assists….
If he gets traded every 6 games this season, in 55 games he should be traded 8 more times. Too bad trade deadline is so soon…
I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.
1 assist in 1 game as a Senator
48 games remaining. It’s obvious he should get an assist in all of them based on the sample size of one game.

The 8 more trades concerns me.
Does the pick that comes back go up or down every time? So will the next trade be for a 1st or a 3rd?
Buffalo's shot chart is hilarious

Given how Buffalo's one goal was fairly dodgy, I'd say Anderson had no one to blame but himself that he didn't get the shutout.

Ya
I thought Darren’s statement that Andy would “probably” want that one back was the biggest display of generosity that I’ve seen this holiday season.
That being said, I will allow one crappy goal per game IF he stops every other shot. I think the team could deal with that.

Not like he needs PP goals anyway, he already has more than anyone else in the league. Might as well let Leopold have it.

Daigle used to wear #91...
Why would we want him to wear Daigle’s #91? It should be retired, but for the wrong reasons – burry it at the entrance to the SBP, so every time you come in to the rink, you step on it. I guess Turris wants to forget about the time he wore #91, and either #7 was his fav, or is now :) other #91s include: Brad Richards, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares…
I agree, #7 is an awkward selection given the trade, but it is fairly popular number – 341 players had it in the past. Although #15 is most popular ever, with #14, #17, #18, #12, #16 close behind.
I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.
I would like to erase the stank from Daigle

Didnt get to watch the game
and briefly listened to it on the radio. How did Anacondra, Turricane and Falapeno do? I was excited to see what that line could do. By the stats it looked like they were not too shabby. Very surprised by Condra. Pleasantly of course :)
Kuba had 6 blocked shots
Not a bad return for him. 23 minutes in 1st game back, over 3 minutes shorthanded.

"I couldn't score in a brothel...couldn't finish a sandwich"

Miller was pretty good last night. A couple of outright thefts, especially on that Dogman chance. Game could have easily been 5-1, 6-1.
Buffalo is in some trouble. Even with all of the injuries, they have so many players making at least $3M-$4M in that lineup. All that “depth” should help them through periods like this.
Although it was a snoozer most of the time...
This game was a good game for some players. There were no zeroes. Condra was awesome on the 2nd line, Spezza had a great game, Neil was so responsible, Foligno continues to impress and most of all Turris looked like he fit in.
Too early to judge? Maybe, but it’s a good sign when he looks like he is having as much fun (although nervous too) as the rest of the guys. He was good defensively, which isn’t usually the case for a free-styling offensive type player. So once he gets his conditioning back, gets used to the system and settles in, we will see what he really has to offer to Ottawa.

Maybe not the last word...
…but certainly one of the funniest since the trade; from DGB:
The trade: The Senators send David Rundblad and a second round pick to the Coyotes for Kyle Turris.
The view from Ottawa: Rundblad had developed a reputation for committing lazy turnovers that led directly to easy goals for the other team, and the Senators already have a ton of guys who are good at that.
The view from Phoenix: Turris described his time in Phoenix by saying “it’s something that was a frustrating situation and I’m just glad it’s in the past”, with the “it” presumably referring to “sunlight”.
Final verdict: In hindsight, Turris probably regrets not being more specific with that “no trades to teams with scoreboards from the 1950s” contract clause.
Yeah, that was lame article and a joke
- How does it feel to tell an old joke?
- Like peeing behing a bus that just left the station…
I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.
I thought the article was pretty funny
Just that one joke was a total miss
Thing is, DGB also uses
- the Alfie guarantee from 2004 joke
- the Philips scores in own net in SCF from 2007 joke
- and nothing new since 2008 jokes when it comes to the Senators.
So expecting him to have new material on us is hoping for an awful lot.
I still think he’s funny as hell, mind you. :D
A Goal Horn Haiku
Hoooonk hoooonk honk honk hooooonk
That's the sound the train horn makes
Suck it, Toronto
Umm...

You see, Turris’ initial request on his NTC was no teams with old scoreboards. Sens announced a new scoreboard thereby negating his NTC….sigh…
DGB lives in Ottawa and is one of the funniest hockey writers on the web. Easily. Sure he’s a Leafs fan but he takes a ton of shots at his team too.
by The Dutch Treat on Dec 21, 2011 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

I just assumed he wrote an article before the announcement and it was posted after.. But surely, I was wrong. The bus is gone too…
I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.
That interpretation doesn't really work though
Because being more specific with that clause wouldn’t make a difference if the team was getting a new scoreboard.
So if that was the joke, it’s really a very poorly written one.
Ottawa trades David Rundblad and a 2nd round pick for Kyle Turris and a new Jumbotron
Would have been a fair trade IMHO. Although our new jumbotron probably costs less than $2M?

Twitter: @sens_adnan
He is fun to watch for sure
But I chuckle everytime when I see him going to the net, because on the other side of the ice I can see some veteran forward (like Alfie) rushing back to cover the hole on D that would otherwise allow for an odd man rush. It is not a bad thing really, I just imagine what is going on in Alfie’s mind at that time… And frankly Karlsson is way better this season at coming back and being responsible…
I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.
Lost in all of the hullaballoo of Turris' first point
Was Erik Condra’s epic net drive. The 360 roll off a blindside check was unreal.
If Turris can mysteriously have immediate chemistry with Condra we could have a good roster problem on our hands.
I still want to see Turris with Greening and Foligno
And Michalek with Spezz and Alfie.
That’s when we’ll be our most potent, in my opinion.

It’s a fairly straight-forward Ficus retusa species—not the much prettier and fancier coniferous trees. I’ve tried coniferous before, but I ended up killing them all by over-watering or under-watering them. It’s also tough being patient enough to actually give the tree enough time to grow before trying to shape it.
