Around SBN: Seahawks Trade for TE Kellen Winslow

Bob McKenzie and Bruce Garrioch have confirmed that Kyle Turris is coming to Ottawa. Garrioch says the deal is for a "player and a pick". No word yet on who that might be.

The Sens are giving up David Rundblad and a second round pick for Kyle Turris -- a rather steep price.

We will have full analysis of this trade coming shortly.

Dear everyone, I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!

why don’t you all read back 3 weeks, where I have predicted THIS EXACT TRADE Thttp://www.silversevensens.com/2011/11/23/2582813/silver-nuggets-what-to-do-with-the-senators-defensive-logjam#83640017
I feel like I should go buy a lottery ticket or something.
Actually I am quite sad, Rundblad will rock one day no question about that, his size and skills…, I hope Turris will stand on his head and will make Murray proud…

I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.

I hope it's not Rundblad. Maybe it's Regin and a 2nd, or something like that.

I really hope his behavioural issues get controlled and Murray didn’t get fleeced. If he wants 4.5 million from us in the offseason, it’s a waste..

I agree I like the trade…Turris is a first rounder for a reason, Rundblad was Karlsson lite….players with the potential of Turris don’t come around everyday at that age with future potential, like they say you have to give up to get.

by gwplant on Dec 17, 2011 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

I’m thinking they didn’t see as much as they would have liked in DaCosta for the medium term and Filatov has turned into more of a project. Rundblad – for all his offensive ability has really not produced on that front desite the D short-comings. I see this as selling high – maybe.

Anyway, I’m not ready to declare this a bust yet to early to tell for any of these guys.

Frankly, I’m more worried about our goaltending depth…

by west-sider on Dec 17, 2011 2:52 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Don't like this deal.

Turris is (slightly) older and is a risk. Rundblad proved he can dominate the SEL, whereas Turris has not shown he can dominate a pro league.

I do have concerns about Rundblad’s game transitioning to North America, but I still think he needs a bit more of a chance than he got.

exactly. Turris wasn't a need. He was a want.

yes Rundblad did poorly this season, with 20 something games of NHL experience. I saw flashes of brilliance and he could skate. Probably didn’t fit into Maclean’s system.

fucking horrible!

by AAZZ on Dec 17, 2011 2:24 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Cowen made this possible

He stepped up immediately, and he’s showing he can be a stable force on that back end for years to come. I guess that made Rundblad expendable? They used their depth at D to improve themselves up front. A good strategy. We won’t know if this is good for a long time.

point made

maybe this augurs well for lee, carkner and even kuba at the deadline

by AussieSensFan on Dec 17, 2011 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly

Cowen has earned serious consideration for 1st unit PP time in the future, and with Rundblad around that was going to be tough given how the powerplay is Rundblad’s specialization.

This trade is in part a move to groom Cowen as a Pronger 2.0.

by LeTigre on Dec 17, 2011 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

I see this logic too

We have two potential franchise d-men in Cowen and Karlsson w/ other solid prospects in the farm. They payroll was not going to allow us to have three. Rumball was showing minor flashes whereas even at Karlsson"s worst, he showed clear potential brilliance and there’s no mistaking his and Cowen"s compete level. I think this might have been a smart move, actually.

Too expensive

Given that Rundblad will only be an RFA at the end of his contract, the 2nd rounder will be PHX property for a good 7 years, and Turris is only signed for another 1.5, this is not a good trade.

My gut feeling tells me that this is a bad deal, but...

Kyle Turris was the 3rd pick in the 2007 draft, who has more upside?

I was REALLY excited about Rundblad developing here, but this move will either make Brian Murray look like a genius or an idiot in the long run, time will tell. I know Phoenix wanted a first round pick and a roster player, so from that point of view, it’s not THAT bad.

BM clearly knows something we don’t about Rundblad, or Turris, otherwise he wouldn’t have made this trade. He doesn’t exactly have the reputation for making absolutely terrible trades…time will tell.

If Bryan murray who Gms a hockey team thinks this was an overpayment he wouldnt have made the deal

Wow...

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I really wanted BM to land Turris, but I didn’t think we’d have to give up Runblad AND a second for the kid.

I’ll admit, I’ve been wholly unimpressed with Runblad so far this year, especially with all of the pre-season Calder talk… however, Turris has crazy potential and it might work out well for us.

Only time will tell, I suppose.

Wow… just wow.

Think long term folks...

Alfie’s production is going to need to be replaced in the next couple of years and this team is unlikely going to be a top 8 pick in the draft anytime soon…getting a former 3rd overall pick that is a natural goal scorer at his age is a great trade any day of the week…Rundblad like I have been saying is Karlsson lite and you have to give up something to get something.

Ottawa having rights after the present contract is definitely good news…and at only 22yrs old with a cap friendly contract, not only does Turris fit into Ottawa’s plans for this year, he is the ideal fit for the long term plans for the club…no wonder they were after his so hard and for so long.

by gwplant on Dec 17, 2011 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

You need 7 pro seasons to be a UFA

So if he’d signed a 4-year deal, he’d be a UFA. But he signed a 2-year, so combined with his 3-year entry level, you get 5 years. Two more to go.

Hope that helps.

I feel sick...

Turris hasn’t shown he can be a bona fide goal scorer in the league and the play of Rundblad while suspect at times showed enough flashes of brilliance for me to think he is going to be a super D in the coming years.

No time to get used the NA hockey system, no time to develop in the A…wow…way too early to trade him. A solid D is the backbone of any good franchise and to give up a player who could be elite doesn’t sit well with me at all.

by OD99 on Dec 17, 2011 3:13 PM EST reply actions

by gwplant on Dec 17, 2011 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

What does that have to do with anything?

He hasn’t shown he can score in the NHL yet and he has had time to develop in the A and some NHL time.

Usually goal starved teams have their youg guys get lots of ice time and they can actually look better than they are…not in his case.

Not saying he wont’ be a goal scorer but saying he hasn’t proven it so this talk of him being the 2nd line center doesn’t make sense. We want our second line center scoring 15 goals and 30 points?

Dave Tippett hasn’t exactly had a reputation of giving young players alot of chance to succeed…look at the players and leaders of the teams he coached in Dallas…

by gwplant on Dec 17, 2011 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

Relax everyone!!!

It is much easier to judge with a hindsight of 20/20, so let’s judge Murray when we see hos body of work. Turris hasn’t played a game here and solid (I hope he is) Centers can not be picked up every day Hitchhiking on 401. At very least give K.Turris a month or till trade deadline before sending him to KHL…
Seriously, here is the trade in a different light:

  1. overall 2007 NHL Entry Draft <→ #16 overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft + Ottawa’s 2nd round pick in 2012.
Now let’s assume we get into playoffs, this could be pick #40, so we get #3 for #16 and #40, fair? in my books this is very fair, and hindsight of 20/20 will determine the winner 10, 15 years from now, relax and do not panic on day 1 of a 15 year journey!

could be #40, could be #50 or #55

I feel like there is very little difference in #31 or #60 in pretty much any draft year, but we all know difference statistically between #3 and #16 is ginormous. Yes, we can always point to Daigle, Hickey, Svitov, Volchkov, but in the last 20 years there have been very few if any huge disappointments in top 3, and Turris will have great career, mark my words! Rundblad will likely too, but what I care is winning Stanley Turris and I will support my Sens with Turris just like I supported them with Rundblad.
Anyone remembers that even Alfredsson missed the beginning of the 1997–98 season due to a contract dispute??? We love him no less because of that, give this Canadian kid Turris a chance!

That's it

I’ve supported the Sens, I wanted their players and prospects to succeed, but this? Why?! I was a huge Rundblad fan now that he’s in the middle of nowhere I won’t see much of him. And why was it necessary to throw in a 2nd as well? I get the logic behind the trade with Cowen-Karlsson being the 1-2 punch and Rundblad being lost in the depth but he’s going to be a stud on the backend and has SHOWN his potential where Turris has what a couple good games in the playoffs and that’s all he’s shown. Don’t like it.

Oh there are twitter rumors Filatov is returning?! LOL interesting day for Sens fans.

Kyle Turris vs. Nathan Horton

I expect that Kyle Turris will turn out to be our Nathan Horton. Both Centers drafted #3.
Horton:
03-04 Florida Panthers 22pnts / 55g
04-05 lockout
05-06 Florida Panthers 47pnts / 71g

Turris:
08-09 Phoenix Coyotes 20pnts / 63g
09-10 AHL
00-11 Phoenix Coyotes 25pnts / 65g

Sure, Turris is a little behind in his development, but if next year(s) he puts up numbers that Horton did, we all will be patting Murry on the back and then some…

I know that, that doesn't matter, I know you Mr. Rainey, that's what matters. You stole my story.

Wealth of riches...

Sens have a wealth of top 6 forwards to compete for jobs for this year and years to come…never a bad thing to have internal competition for jobs, solid 3rd and 4th lines…up and coming defense core and stable goaltending…seems the rebuild years have just gotten alot shorter.

Leafs fans take note.

This is how to rebuild quickly. Going out and signing every old guy off the street is not.

You have to hand it to Lee, he has been more than a good foot soldier, all things considering.
