Ottawa Senators Make it Two in a Row with 3-1 Win Over Calgary Flames
The Ottawa Senators came out with their skating legs in this tilt tonight against the Calgary Flames and were rewarded with a 3-1 victory.
The first period featured no scoring, but it did feature more than a couple good scoring chances on both sides. Craig Anderson stood tall and made some very key saves early in tight, but Miikka Kiprusoff was just as sharp at the other end, making 14 saves in the first frame.
The second period continued the fast pace of the first period. Zenon Konopka got himself into his customary fight, and got a few real good shots in on Tom Kostopolous. The fight seemed to inspire Konopka's teammates to join him in the penalty box (hey, he's great in the room, guys like being around him). The Senators had to fight off Calgary's terrifying home powerplay (no seriously, it's terrifyingly bad. 5.9%). The big 5-on-3 kill led into a powerplay that generated some chances but couldn't capitalize.
During final couple minutes of the second period the game started getting crazy. Jason Spezza (who had a solid game and was really skating well) had a brain cramp that caused him to make a beautiful pass to a man in a red sweater. Anderson stopped the ensuing breakaway while Spezza hustled back to try to break up the play. Then Daniel Alfredsson scored a beautiful goal, and it looked like the Sens would head into the intermission up 1-0. Alfie scored again just seconds later, but on his own net after Anderson MISplayed the puck and Kostopoulos' shot deflected off the Sens' captain's stick. With shots 28-23 in favour of the Flames, the second intermission was upon us.
The third period was highlighted by Bobby Butler's GORGEOUS first goal of the season. After sneaking by Jay Bouwmeester, Butler undressed Mark Giordano and absolutely rifled a shot high glove side on Kipper. He then decided that just one wasn't enough, and he ripped a second shot, this time low stick side on a 3-on-2. Game. Set. Match.
Sens Hero: Craig Anderson
This is the Craig Anderson from last season. The one goal was a deflection off of his own player, and he made countless great saves. The penalty kill was great tonight, and Anderson was a big part of that. Which brings me to....
Sens Hero: Penalty Kill
Yes, the Flames have a pitiful home powerplay, but Daugavins, Condra, Smith, Winchester and Cowen, along with Anderson, really did their part tonight. They killed off all 5 attempts by the Flames, and paved the way for the win.
Sens Hero: Bobby Butler
This is the Bobby Butler we know and love. Sure, I didn't notice him do anything particularly well in the first two periods, but he scored two beautiful goals, including the game winner. He gave the Sens a much needed road win in a barn that has been none too kind to Sens in recent times, and for that, he is anointed Hero.
Sens In-Betweeno: Powerplay
God, I do love this powerplay. The puck movement is amazing and it really generated some great chances, but it went 0-4 tonight on a night we could have used a powerplay goal.
Sens-Almost Killer: Rene Bourque
For a guy that has been talked about in plenty of trade rumours and has been in a scoring slump, he created chance after chance tonight.
Sens now have won two in a row and will look to make it three on Thursday against the Oilers!

Finally Butler comes through, hopefully the first two of many more to come! Anderson’s little boo boo was horrible but honestly, I’ve already forgotten it because he was just plain awesome for the rest of the game!
Jason Spezza made me almost smash my screen at that giveaway! Good thing Alfredsson scored soon after to calm me the hell down!
My Jason Spezza Obsession is Perfectly Healthy!
That being said, did you see him fly back into a defensive position on that play? Personally I don’t think it was a horrible giveaway, I’ve seen him do much worse. But I do love seeing the defensive responsibility to his game to hustle back and get in the best position to defend the opportunity.

the sens...
are too good, they have to score on themselves to help the other teams…

Hopefully Anderson can keep it going
More games like this is what this team needs if the playoffs are going to happen.
He certainly looked like he wanted it last night.

I’m hoping the last 2 games are a sign that he seems to have turned the corner after a rough start to the season.

Butler
I didn’t watch the game, but it was pretty apparent Butler was pretty much everywhere yesterday. Amazing what giving him an opportunity on the first line will do for his confidence. Watching that recap Butler had to have featured in half the highlights, even before he scored. By rights if not for the penalty he drew we could be talking about his hat trick right now.
I don't think he was on the first line
He spent most of the game with Konopka, and only played eight minutes. He just made his ice time count.

I could have sworn I saw him on a couple rushes with Spezza and maybe with Alfie on another. I’d have watch it again.

Butler did not play a single even strength shift with Spezza or Alfredsson
An Ottawa Senators supporter in Toronto, Ontario. I am cool like that.
Wooo suck it, Flames!
Only caught the last 3 minutes but from the sounds of the first two goals, that’s probably for the best. So much for that is-Butler-worse-than-Konopka debate, eh?
Oh Captain, my Captain!
I'm not sure that's a statistically adequate sample size
Though I’m not sure how you can debate whether a fourth liner and faceoff specialist is better or worse than a diminutive goal scorer anyhow.
It’s a bit like trying to objectively rank french and italian food.

I'm just saying that the debate seemed to centre on Butler being paid more and having fewer goals (goal?)
But that’s no longer the case.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
I hear you.
It’s probably a bit unfair to old Konopka though. Butler has more goals than Anderson too…

Sure and I actually think it's a really bad comparison for the reasons you listed above.
Just poking fun at the Ups and Downs drama from the last couple of weeks.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
Careful. I went too far doing that yesterday and got in trouble with Dad.

Wait, doesn't Andy have an assist?
Isn’t that one more point than Bobby Butler had before last night’s game? What a bust!
Oh Captain, my Captain!
But now Bobby B has more goals than Karlsson.
Can you unvote for the All Star Game?

Actually, Anderson has two assists
That’s still one more point than the Bust, as he notched his first assist against the Rangers last week.

Actually the comparison was made only to show that Konopka has been getting a bad wrap especially from some of the bloggers on this site in the fact that he was even though comparing apples and oranges between him and Butler I was trying to show that Konopka was playing his role better than Butler. Konopka having played only 6 mpg and in 13 games has 1 goal 1 assist and after last night is a +1 on the season and has taken only 3 minor penalties and the team has a 7-6 record with him in the lineup…I don’t see what the problem is with the role he has been brought in to do….it can be argued that at the very least the 4th line was the best line in the third period, of which he is a member but all that was pointed out in the blog was:
“The second period continued the fast pace of the first period. Zenon Konopka got himself into his customary fight, and got a few real good shots in on Tom Kostopolous. The fight seemed to inspire Konopka’s teammates to join him in the penalty box (hey, he’s great in the room, guys like being around him).”
What a feel were a couple of derogatory comments rather than the game stats….2, 1 shot. 6mins 1 fight and a good third period…..
Yeah it was a joke.
I’m not playing this game with you until at least next week’s Ups and Downs.
Seriously, though, if you think Konopka is getting a bad wrap on here, you should take the time to write a fan post setting out your whole argument rather than making a bunch of comments on a bunch of different posts.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
“Though I’m not sure how you can debate whether a fourth liner and faceoff specialist is better or worse than a diminutive goal scorer anyhow.

I agree…
Yes, I gather that was the gist of your argument
And it’s a fair one. I think the negative reactions to your posts stem from the perception that you may be overly defensive of Konopka, or perhaps just overly aggressive in your defense of him. I do understand your argument that he’s often criticised for doing exactly what he’s asked to do (though I think a lot of this is due to people’s feelings on the “fighter” role and not Zenon himself).
Out of curiosity, are you a Senators fan, or just a big fan of Konopka?
by RogerTheShrubber on Nov 16, 2011 2:35 PM EST up reply actions
I'll venture to say that gwplant is a ZK fan
because he /she comments strictly about Zenon. Everyone has a role on the team. In this I kinda agree with gw that ZK is fulfilling his role abet a small role on the team. His role is to fight the occasional staged fights, make sure the youngsters are not bullied and not hurt the team. That’s what he is brought in for by BM. His performance should be based on what BM expects of Zenon. Butler, on the other hand is to deliver goals and prior to last night, had no delivered. But didn’t he not score till his 9th or 10th game last season? And last night was his 10th game this season. I want to see BB succeed (obviously). He needs more opportunity (minutes), and that’s not on the 4th line. I don’t think we should be comparing Zenon to Butler: different roles.

Butler
Let’s hope this gives him some confidence and helps him get his season on track. Nice work last night Butler!
What's the deal with Filatov?
SensChirp has been following a story that he may or may not want to go back to Russia, has anyone heard anything more on this?
In my opinion, meh.
If he goes back to Russia because we wanted him in the minors for a few months, good riddance. I mean really, if he can’t handle that kind of adversity, he never would have made it.
Otherwise its all BS, in which case I’m not going to get my panties in a twist.

He wasn't at his best in the Bingo game last Sunday
With the team’s struggles I guess I maybe understand it… But I hope he realizes that going back to Russia will probably spell the end of his NHL chances. At least for the next few seasons.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
As far as I know it's just a Internet rumor
According to Joy Lindsay, who covers Bingo:
“He was at the skate this morning and hasn’t expressed any displeasure with being here.”

watching Giordano scabble on that Bulter goal
is quite amusing, especally when he makes him fall on his own.
I laughed so much while watching it
Hilarious.

The standings are leading me into an existential crisis
All the “good teams” and the “bad teams” are a few points from each other, and its not even the 1 point OTL rule: we only have 2 fewer wins than the conference leaders.

Sens/Pens first round! 4th time in last 4 playoff appearances!
An Ottawa Senators supporter in Toronto, Ontario. I am cool like that.
God I hope not.
I want to be back in the playoffs, but I’d rather see any other team this time. Just because I’m tired of the Pens.
Toronto, Florida and Ottawa all in the playoffs.
I see nothing implausible about this situation continuing until the end of the season.
/sarcasm
Oh Captain, my Captain!
Yep. Until the end of the season
When they all somehow end up in 9th.
You never know. That's why they play 82 games to decide the playoffs.
But frankly, its a uphill battle for us.
