Senators lose 6-5 to Maple Leafs despite incredible third

From the first two games, I have learned two things so far. The Senators are a young team that makes a lot of mistakes, but they also have a lot of skill and don't quit on a game. Is two games enough to determine what kind of team this is? Of course not. But I have been very impressed with the last two third periods. As far as going to a game and seeing the Senators, this is probably the best I've felt in a losing cause. By the way, if you ever get the chance to go to a game in Toronto, and you are okay with a little trash talk, I highly recommend it. A Senators/Leafs game in Toronto always has a great atmosphere and the locals are really into it.
Note: This post is very long, fair warning.

The first two periods of this game went eerily similar to the Detroit game. The Senators were dominating early, and the Leafs didn't get a shot until the 10:27 mark of the first period, at which point the shots were 6-0 Ottawa. There was an incredible rush by Stéphane Da Costa that even had the Leafs fans around me ooohing and aaahing.  That all changed when Jared Cowen took a double minor for high sticking Colby Armstrong. Mikhail Grabovski scored a lovely goal when he was left wide open in the slot with Chris Phillips caught watching. With just a minute left in the period, Joffrey Lupul lost Erik Karlsson and fed it to Phil Kessel, who promptly wired it past Craig Anderson to make it 2-0. There was also a random fight between Zenon Konopka and Mike Brown in the period.

The second period was all Toronto and started with a huge hit on Da Costa  by Dion Phaneuf. My initial reaction was "SHANABAN!", with Da Costa's helmet going flying not helping matters. However, looking back at the replay, the hit seemed clean. What ensued afterwards is one of the reasons I really dislike Chris Neil. I don't know what it looked like on TV, but to me it looked like Chris Neil jumped a pretty unwilling Luke Schenn into a fight and put the Senators down a man for four minutes again. Having said that, I really don't understand what the roughing penalty was for. The instigator was totally warranted, but I really can't figure out the roughing. Almost seemed like two minutes for being Chris Neil. The Leafs scored on that power play and made it 4-0 late in that period when Sergei Gonchar did his best to make me very angry. I really have no idea what he was doing there. First he had the puck go right between his legs, then he just let Kessel cruise right by him and receive a pass before putting it by Anderson. It was awful. His partner Jared Cowen wasn't looking too good either, there was one play where he went for a big hit on Grabovski by the boards, completely missed him, leading to a great scoring chance.

Click after the jump for a crazy third period.

Star-divide

At the start of the period, I was feeling all, 'Why the frak am I here?' but the Senators soon finally gave me some reason to cheer. The aforementioned Gonchar worked a nice give-and-go with Colin Greening who cut to the net and put the Senators on the board. Then Colton Orr scored and I cried a little bit on the inside.

The Senators took three straight penalties in a 1:58 span to put them down two men for a long 1:47. At this point I mentioned to my Leafs fan friend, "It is going to be 7-1 by the end of these penalties isn't it?" Surprisingly, they actually did a great job of killing that penalty, without Craig Anderson really being tested too much. At the end of the 5 on 3, Daniel Alfredsson jumped out of the box just as Chris Phillips flipped the puck out of the zone. Alfredsson made no mistake to make it a 5-2 game and adding a nice "!@#$ YOU!" fist pump, and causing me to start yelling "ALFIE! ALFIE!". It was still 5-2 with less than five minutes left in the game, when the Senators received a 5-on-3 of their own and Erik Karlsson took over. Karlsson made a beautiful cross ice pass to Michalek at the right side of the net, who passed it to Spezza at the left side and he banged it in to make a 5-3 game. Just eight seconds later and still on the power play, Daniel Alfredsson made an incredible tip on an Erik Karlsson shot. Just like that a game that was looking like a rout was now a 5-4 game with still over four mintues left.

Now that's when things got a bit ugly in the crowd. With the Leafs on the brink of a shocking collapse, a few guys (and girls) decided to release their rage by throwing their pizza trays and beer glasses at me and pointing out that I "clap like a monkey". To their credit, most of the Leafs fans around me stood up for me and starting chanting "douchebag! douchebag!" at the other Leafs fans. After the game, a lot of people apologised to me, so that was nice.

Anyway back to the game, Phil Kessel completed his hat trick and seemingly ended Ottawa's come back attempt blowing by Sergei Gonchar (who else?) and Jared Cowen just let Kessel skate by. Seriously, Kessel went one way and Cowen went the other way. I guess Cowen was trying to not let him get to the net, but it wasn't a good night for Cowen the Barbarian.

The Senators still didn't give up and Erik Karlsson just was incredible on the fifth goal. He faked a slap shot, passed it across the ice to a wide open Da Costa who had half an empty net for his first career goal and a nice celebration to go with it.

The Senators couldn't get the game tied up and ended up losing 6-5, but I couldn't have been happier with the third period. It was a herculean effort to make a game of it. The Senators have been scored 8-0 in the first two periods so far, but outscored their opponents 8-3 in the third period. I may have predicted the Senators make the playoffs, which would seem laughable looking at the first couple of periods, but the third periods show the high end skill that this team possesses. Can they string it together over full games? I'd like to think so, but failing that, at least the games will be entertaining.

Senators Hero: Daniel Alfredsson
Alfie was battling a head cold, but he really was great in the third. He looked pretty good throughout the night, and showed a lot of composure on his breakaway goal to control the bouncing puck. His tip on the 5-4 goal was also a thing of beauty. This team didn't give up on the night and that kind of attitude comes straight from the captain. Also, his pump fist was awesome.

Senators Hero: Jason Spezza
The Senators didn't score in the first two periods, but Spezza was one of the few players that impressed me the whole game. He led the team with five shots, had a goal and an assist and his line looked very dangerous once again. He did have one shocking turnover near the end of the first period though, but overall he was solid.

Honourable Mention: Erik Karlsson
Karlsson wasn't dangerous most of the night, but boy did he turn it on at the end of the game. His pass for Da Costa's goal was a thing of beauty, as was his pass on Spezza's goal. Karlsson ended with three points on the night.

Interestingly enough, Paul MacLean's even strength pairing of choice on the night was Karlsson and Filip Kuba. Karlsson led all Senators with 26:08 of total ice time.

Senators Killer: Phil Kessel
Since the start of the 2008-2009 season, Kessel has now scored 16 goals in 17 games against Ottawa. That's almost a goal every freaking game. What can you say about the guy? He just torches the Sens. Every one of his goals were well taken and he was hands down the best player on the ice.

Senators Killer: Incompetent defending
I really think David Rundblad has got to play the home opener now. Whatever his defensive short comings, how much worse could it be than the current crop? Sergei Gonchar was particularly awful tonight, but Chris Phillips, Erik Karlsson and Jared Cowen all made glaring mistakes. For the second straight night, I was reasonably okay with Filip Kuba and Brian Lee. Since Gonchar and Phillips aren't going to be benched, the only way Rundblad gets in is in favour of Cowen or Lee.

Senators Killer: Penalties
The Senators were shorthanded seven times and made to pay twice. They took two separate double minors, in addition to a lengthy 5-on-3. This really has to change.

Senators Zero: Sergei Gonchar
Gonchar was just awful out there and looked lost a few times. He did make a nice play on Greening's goal but he had me shaking my head. He can't continue this. While he played 23:29 on the night, only 12:07 was on even strength.

Dishonourable mention: Jared Cowen

It could be a case of his partner struggling, but I wasn't impressed with Cowen at all tonight. The one glaring mistake I remember is him going for the big hit and completely missing, but he didn't seem too involved tonight for me. He had no hits on the night and took a double minor as well. His ice time of of 16:41 was the second lowest after Brian Lee.

Power play clicking

While the Senators power play wasn't dangerous every time, there was a stretch earlier in the game where they kept possession in the Toronto zone for almost the entire two minutes. I generally liked the movement, but they weren't rewarded until later in the game, when they scored power play goals just eight seconds apart. The Senators now have four power play goals already in their first two games.

Da Costa/Zibanejad watch
Da Costa is winning this so far after the first two games. Not only did he score his first career NHL goal, he was buzzing earlier in the game, including the previously mentioned rush that had the Leafs fans impressed. He did get hit pretty hard, but seemed fine after. Zibanejad I didn't notice too much, though he did get a great chance on a 2-on-1 with Chris Neil.

Neil VS Schenn

It was all Neil for starting it. It looked like Schenn wasn’t looking for a fight, but was willing to rumble if one came his way.

by B_T on Oct 9, 2011 1:52 AM EDT reply actions

What was the roughing penalty for?

I can’t figure that out.

An Ottawa Senators supporter in Toronto, Ontario. I am cool like that.

by Adnan on Oct 9, 2011 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions

We were talking about it last night

The best theory I’ve seen is that the refs wanted to send a message before the game got out of control.

apparently Neil was already getting 2 minutes roughing

for trying to get Dion to fight. When that didnt work he went and fought Schenn, who actually initiated contact, but because the refs saw him out there looking to fight, they gave him the instigator as well, I think.

by DaveYoung on Oct 9, 2011 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Interesting

That’s not how I understand the instigator penalty. I always thought it was for players who jumped someone and forced them to fight. I don’t think that was the case with Schenn.

you sure you were watching the same replay?

Schenn was intentionally in Neil’s way to the bench and even Nealey said he was grabbing Neil’s jersey at first, before fists were thrown.

by AAZZ on Oct 9, 2011 2:19 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

For sure

It looked like it was all Neil at first, but on the replay it was clearly a mutually agreed upon fight. Considering Neil’s reputation, I understand why it came out this way. It was a bad bounce against us, but it’s an 82 game schedule and we will get ours back.

by Barnsley Pal on Oct 9, 2011 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Absolutely

Schenn took a stride in front of Neil and had his arm up in Neil’s face. Thats when Neil dropped the gloves. Schenn was the instigator, not Neil

Common sense is the most evenly distributed quality in all the world.
Everyone thinks they have enough.

by havey03 on Oct 9, 2011 8:35 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

Schenn wasn’t moving, and Neil going directly towards Schenn, which was slightly off from the bench.

Schenn was willing to go as soon as Neil got to him, wasn’t going to do anything to avoid it, but didn’t move towards Neil either.

by B_T on Oct 9, 2011 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Neil was going to the Sens bench

Maybe Schenn said something, but he definitely stepped out in front of Neil. Still, I think the instigator penalty was fair, and I think this is an example of why it’s stupid.

by Peter Raaymakers on Oct 9, 2011 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions

To me, it looked like Schenn dropped the gloves first

I wouldn’t have given out an instigator for that, though I believe Neil was just looking for a reason to fight and Schenn being vaguely in the way of the bench was good enough.

two points:

1) why not just play third periods? save themselves 40mins of energy and just come out for the third… gotta try something.

2) is it too early to call for a gone-char trade?

uncalled for 3) ‘zinedine’ zibanejad will go after 9 games. he hasn’t impressed enough to stay full time

OK, Leafs fan here...

..but I didn’t come to brag. I’ll also try to breathe through my nose and still my troglodyte tail for a moment while I post.

Really like that Da Costa kid, he should become a very solid player. Still not sold on Filatov though. And from the early going, it seems that your Achilles heel will be goaltending this season. Having lived through the Toskalol years, I empathize. Great determination in the third, and excellent work by Alfie and co. to score a couple times on that 2-man adv. Easy to take some positives from this, if not a point.

dunno if it’s the goalie. not having any d-men in front certainly hinders the situation. we can’t depend on ando to stop everything when gone-char and co are letting them walk through.

Ha, it's okay to be a Leafs fan here (well, not really) as long as you're respectful

I feel like our defense is hanging our goalies out to dry.

Toronto looks like they’ve improved from last year. Kessel could hit all the expectations laid at his feet with a center like Connolly.

Ya, at this point

Its on the defence. But Anderson’s thing is that he can steal games, and it would be nice to see him stop a couple he isn’t supposed to stop.

And stop by anytime! I love talking to Leaf fans who are smart and respectful. It’s the other kind I don’t have much time for!

Insightful post

I’m not as worried about goaltending. I think cutting down on turnovers and playing better D will make Anderson look a lot better.

Cowen vs. Kessel

I don’t think Cowen was letting Kessel skate by, more covering for the pass which i the smarter play when dealing with an odd man situation. The goalie takes the shooter and you take the pass… IMO.

by Canuck Abroad on Oct 9, 2011 7:38 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I had the same impression

At that point, the shooter wasn’t Cowen’s responsibility. It was Gonchar getting blown by that created the 2-on-1. Cowen wasn’t in a great position to play the pass, so he’s still culpable, but Kessel’s shot was pretty much unstoppable.

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

by Mark Parisi on Oct 9, 2011 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions

not exactly

the shooter is the goalie’s responsibility up to a certain distance. he has to cover the pass while simultaneously putting pressure on the shooter to let the shot off earlier than he wants to. he let kessel come in way too close on a great angle and should have challenged him a few feet before. also he should recognize that kessel is a shoot-first type of player and that streaking on the other side was a grinder (brown i believe?.. anyways someone who doesn’t typically score). these are things he’ll need to learn but it wasn’t the worst play he could have made… just not the best.. at all. he’ll learn to recognize faces and who can shoot the puck etc.

by Caden on Oct 9, 2011 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

He certainly could have played it better

But the truth is if Gonchar had played correctly, Cowen wouldn’t have been in that spot.

Amazing how little effort Gonchar put into that pinch

First of all, your at your own flipping blue line, why would anyone ever pinch? Second, if you get beat like a cheap rug you should probably hustle back and try to break the 2-1 you just created up, not stand and watch from the blue line.

Nice to see the team make it competitive, but holy hell was Gonchar terrible last night. Really frustrating. The rest of the young team you’ve got to think will get better, but when your 37 year old veteren is that much of a pylon, you’ve got to wonder if he’ll get it going again.

Da Costa

Like Adnan said a couple of times it’s only been two games but after seeing Karlsson & Da Costa playing catch through traffic on that last goal I was wondering if maybe Da Costa will a pleasant surprise for the Sens this season. If the Sens are going to do a lot of losing this season, it’s nice to see them losing with heart and not just laying down like last season.
Also how are supposed to stop ourselves from scapegoating people with flatfooted performances like Gonchars last two?

How is anyone supposed to top Sterling Snakehouse?

by worsteverything on Oct 9, 2011 10:08 AM EDT via iPhone app reply actions

I think criticism of both Gonchar and Phillips is warranted at this point

If we are going to magnify one play (Kuba’s strange fall-down defense on the first goal, for instance) and decide that a player sucks forever, I think that would be a mistake.

In Gonchar’s case, there’s way too much video evidence of almost no effort on plays to avoid criticism. He’s earned it, and anyone who is watching the games can see why. It’s impossible to defend his game right now.

by AAZZ on Oct 9, 2011 10:13 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Because Lee has been one of our better defensemen this year

Lee plays responsible, mistake-free hockey. He led the team in hits yet again and was even on a six-goal night. Your anger towards him is way off the mark.

Mistakes by defensemen have directly led to most of the goals scored against this team. Subbing in Rundblad, who has been mistake-prone as he learns the North American style, for Lee, who has been mistake-free, would simply not be a good decision.

I don't think the Sens need to play great defence to win.

Based on what I’ve seen in the first two games, I think we just need to play competent defense. Get Gonchar out of there, stop giving up so many odd-man-rushes and chances in transition, and this team might be able to string some wins together.

I'd agree

The mistakes our defensemen are making are so blatant that they’re winding up in the back of our net. What’s compounding it is that most of those mistakes are coming from our veterans. I think there are very few teams capable of winning under those circumstances.

But he hasn’t been nearly as bad as he was last season. I think there are far better targets so far than Kuba.

Hi, I'm new.

I just wanted to say that I find your use of profanity unnecessary in this post. I feel as though your message (emotions included) would have come across just as well without it.

Welcome to the site!

Thanks for joining. Typically, our comments section is pretty clean, but sometimes profanity will pop up. QQ’s comment is irregular because of it’s amount of profanity (which, I agree, was probably unnecessary), but we don’t have a strict no-profanity policy. I hope that doesn’t bother you, but we don’t mind fans coming here to let off steam and voice their opinions—as long as it’s done in a respectful manner.

by Peter Raaymakers on Oct 9, 2011 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I most certainly do not mind profanity.

I just found that it hindered his message instead of supported it.

I have been reading this blog for about 9 months now, so I am somewhat familiar with the feel of the comments. The reason I enjoy reading this blog so much is because I find the arguments/venting are generally intellectual and respectful.

by J MacPhee on Oct 9, 2011 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

We'll typically keep it that way

Messages as passionately enraged as QQ’s are typically the exception rather than the rule. But if you’ve been lurking for the last nine months or so, I’m sure you know that by now.

Again, thanks for joining, hopefully we continue to see you around!

Ha fair enough

I guess he can do it if he wants, I just don’t think he will. Even if Gonchar presumably doesn’t care about Ottawa, which I don’t agree with, he’ll need to play well to get out of here.

Also, I don’t think it’s helpful to boo our players at home no matter how bad they play, but you pay the money so up to you.

by Adnan on Oct 9, 2011 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I was there too

I was watching the game at the ACC as well, section 320. Based on accounts like these (I think Adnan had another similar experience with beer being dumped on him) I didn’t wear my Sens jersey to the game (and also don’t fly my Sens flag on my car in the playoffs in TO cause I know douchebag Leafs fans will key my car or something).

I didn’t really identify myself as a Sens fan to anyone other than my buddy until we started scoring in the 3rd and I got up and cheered. The older gentleman next to me was a respectable Leafs fan, he just got some really good laughs out of the Phaneuf/Da Costa hit which I suppose is understandable.

This big fat drunk idiot in front of me though was chirping everyone around him. There were at least 6-7 other Sens fans in my vicinity, most of which weren’t wearing any team markings but you could tell by the way they cheered (or didn’t cheer most of the game). This drunk guy was going full-retard and was talking about fighting this guy a row ahead of him who was wearing a Leafs jersey that had whole “Losers Since 67” thing going on his back with a Sens cap on. It’s fans like these that make my skin crawl and ruin the possibility of any kind of respectful rivalry… I guess fans like him are the exception to the rule. However I am NOT surprised that poor Adnan was abused just for (what sounds like) slow clapping Alfie’s goals. I know if I had been more vocal, I would’ve gotten something thrown at me too (and btw, the guy with the Losers Since jersey got hit with an empty water bottle toward the end of the game from a few rows up). If I had been as vocal as any of those Leafs fans, that idiot probably would’ve attacked me.

Anyway, I would’ve enjoyed it more if we’d won, but at least we made it respectable in the 3rd period and almost made the Leafs look like fools. It was great seeing all their fans dead silent lol. It was pretty exciting but happened so fast I didn’t realize we were back in the game till there were 2 min left!

Watching the first two periods of that game though, felt a little like this:

I actually really enjoy going to the games here

I have been to a Leafs/Sens game like 15 times and only the last couple of times have people thrown stuff. Most of the people are really good fun.

I love going out in a Sens jersey and the back and forth banter. :D

Butler

Hey, long time reader, pretty much my first post.

Anyone have any theories on why Butler was scratched? I mean it’s obvious he’s slid down the depth chart and he wasn’t the shiny object training camp/preaseason, but I think after last year he deserves a chance to prove himself.

by SuckItTrebek on Oct 9, 2011 3:14 PM EDT reply actions

I think it was a combination of him struggling and playing the Leafs

MacLean probably felt it was going to be a rough game and felt he needed a fighter. Not that I agree with that strategy, but I think that was his reasoning.

An Ottawa Senators supporter in Toronto, Ontario. I am cool like that.

by Adnan on Oct 9, 2011 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I think there are a few reasons, and I definitely think it's temporary

One reason is what Adnan noted about team toughness, and what you said about his weak pre-season. But I don’t think it will last: I think Butler will be back in once Zibanejad is sent to Europe (which I’m now pretty sure will happen), and I think he’ll do fine. Not as well as last season, but i think he’ll be back in, at any rate.

I, personally, was pretty happy with his game on Thursday. Thought he was skating her (I didn’t give his skating credit, but it’s not bad), playing the body, and driving the net. It’s a recipe for success, so I don’t think he’ll be out long.

by Peter Raaymakers on Oct 9, 2011 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree

How can Bust go from top-line penciled in to healthy scratch? Seems to me he and Walrus don’t see eye-to-moustache. Not sure what it could be but that’s way to steep a drop in 7 pre-season games.
The Bust has pushed some buttons that the Walrus didn’t like…

by MadCash on Oct 10, 2011 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Changed my mind on Da Costa

I’ve been saying he looks too weak and so he shouldn’t fit into #2. Well I still think he’s not that strong, but man that was a tough hit to take last night and he stayed in the game and potted a sweet goal at the end, so maybe he’ll be alright despite not being the biggest/strongest guy.

Zbad seems to need to learn how to play in the NHL without the puck, and better first step quickness. His offense close in to the net is great though. My prediction is he goes back to SEL for the year after game #9, and is a strong #2 C for us a year or two from now.

by Joebo on Oct 9, 2011 3:33 PM EDT reply actions

Da Costa still needs to get stronger

He has really good vision, which lets him create plays, but I don’t believe he can take a beating at the NHL level without adding strength.

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

by Mark Parisi on Oct 9, 2011 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that's a long-term thing

This off-season will probably be a big one for him bulking up. Last, he was likely focussing on stamina, this time might be strength.

Still, you can’t teach height, so he’s never going to be too big. He looks fine for the time being, thoug.

by Peter Raaymakers on Oct 9, 2011 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

He does get pushed off the puck a bit, for now

but it’s something he will work on and become more adept to over time. As we all agree, he has been very impressive. Hope he keeps it up.

by whatsinaname on Oct 10, 2011 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

He'll never be a power forward

But if he can be a Palffy/Selanne type i.e. not physical, but tough enough to take a beating and snipe in response, that would be a good thing. Phaneuf hit was a nice start. If he doesn’t back off his game after a few more of those it’ll be a good sign re his toughness.

If you're unsure of the fire ZappaCosta plays with

check this…granted it’s a terrible hit but he’s not afraid of dustups. To the contrary actually, he looks rather insane.

I wasn't able to watch as much of the game as I would have liked,

but I thought Z Bad showed why he has elite playmaker potential. I will always remember Gonchar for allowing a Habs’ player (I’m blanking on who) to streak by him on the outside and score. Sounds like he’s back to his old tricks. I wish they’d sit him too, but wouldn’t that put the team under the cap floor? Or does that not apply in the case of healthy scratches?

by Pmoron on Oct 9, 2011 4:37 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Like an idiot changed the channel when it was 5-1

Was fully anticipating watching the entire game despite the tigers/rangers game being on. When the sens went down 5-1 decided to start watching the ball game. So inbetween innings i switch back and it’s 5-4! At this point I didn’t care if the sens won or lost, what a showing by the young guys! Da Costa looked great after getting absolutely crushed by phagoof. Neil was being Neil, but Schenn engaged him first, clearly didn’t want to fight though, still instigator plus roughing? gimme a break.
Also, been a sens fan at a leafs game twice. First time 2007, sens were up 2-0, I was being beligerant obviously, leafs came back to win 3-2 in OT. Long story short, had an 8 year old chirping me after the game. And last year went to the Craig Anderson show, 52 save shutout 1-0 shootout win by the sens! Leafs fans are babies, can’t blame them really, they do pay 2000 bucks to see a team lose year after year… GO SENS GO!!

Thoughts

Don’t want to state the obvious but turnovers by our D killed us vs Detroit. Against TO our play against the rush was very bad. When the Leafs crossed our blueline they had way too many options. The gap between our forwards and D wasn’t good which caused our D to back up way too far.

Right now we obviously need to play better defensively and I don’t think putting another rookie Dman in there will help. Runblad will be a star as will Zibanejad but they could probably use some more seasoning. Runblad in AHL and Zibanejad back in Sweden.

The veterans on D definitely need to pick up their games. We really miss Carkner’s presence back there for those that don’t think he helps the team. On that last Leaf’s goal one cannot blame Cowen. Gonchar left him and Auld out to dry and Cowen’s responsibility is the pass. Even though Cowen is making some mistakes I love what I am seeing from him. Sending him back to junior was by far the best move for him.

At forward, I was very critical of what I have seen of Filatov. I still don’t see any chemistry as I said in pre-season with Spezza. If he has skill I haven’t seen enough of it. He doesn’t like to go to the dirty areas and I believe you need to have two good but hard working players on Spezza’s wing. I would like to see Butler back on the right side with Michalek and Spezza. People say he hasn’t scored but Filatov hasn’t either and Butler works his but off and goes in the corners. BTW Maclean took Filatov off the Spezza line half way through the game and put him on the 4th line so I think he sees the same thing.

DaCosta is the real deal and I love what the Bingo guys: Butler, Condra, Greening, Z Smith bring to the team.

This is what I’d like to see up front for now:

Michalek – spezza – butler
Greening – dacosta – alfredsson
Foligno – Z smith – Neil
Condra – konopka – insert who u want

BTW Neil is the heart and soul of this team!

by JVT on Oct 9, 2011 10:52 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

good thing we aren't too quick to judge players in ottawa

as for your assessment, Filatov goes into the corners just as much as Butler, and filatov actually knows what his end of the ice looks like, and will battle in his own zone. Butler will not.

by DaveYoung on Oct 10, 2011 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Time will tell....

It is alot easier to sit one of your own prospects rather than a veteran like Gonchar or a newcomer like Filatov. The Sens are going to rely on Gonchar heavily this year and with Filatov, yes they want to give him every chance to win a spot. The problem is we are in the regular season now and if he was going to produce I believe he would have in pre-season against lesser competition. I have nothing against him and want him to do well but he has to show something and I definitely haven’t seen enough thus far to warrant playing time on the first line.

I will take Butler any day over Filatov so we disagree there. As I said, unless he starts to produce (Goals) he will move down the depth chart and out of the lineup. You can already see it happening with him moving to the 4th line during the Leafs game.

Time will tell but right now I would bet on Butler being here alot longer than Filatov!

Just my take and yes it is early!

by JVT on Oct 10, 2011 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

We shouldn't give up on anyone

after two games…………except Gonchar. I am “likening” Lee more and more with his simple game. Love Filatov and Milan’s speed. Alfie’s so smart on the ice, as usual and SDC is such a stealth ninja to everyone except Dion.

by whatsinaname on Oct 10, 2011 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not good when the team's two best defensive blueliners are Kuba and Lee.

Well, Lee has been improving, to be fair, but still.

And it is only two games into the season.

But still.
