Senators fall 5-3 to Detroit Red Wings in regular season debut

"Come on, guys. 39 shots? Seriously?"

Our first regular season glimpse at the new edition of the Ottawa Senators was pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a young, inexperienced team: speed, effort, and a rollercoster game with more mistakes than you can count. Oh well. You have to start somewhere, right?

The Senators came out as the stronger team in the first period, spending plenty of time in Detroit's zone and creating turnovers all over the ice. Unfortunately, it was the Wings who struck first, with Todd Bertuzzi taking advantage of a bad line change (and an unaware Sergei Gonchar) to get a breakaway goal.

Unfortunately, things kind of fell apart in the second period. The Wings put 3 goals on the board during the second period, all of them created by bad turnovers by the Senators' defensemen. The Senators were constantly hemmed into their own end during the second, and just unable to create any real moment.

The Senators looked a bit sluggish to start the third, allowing a lucky Ian White goal from the point that made it 5-0. It looked like it was completely over at that point (and let's face it, it was), but the Senators fought back and made it respectable. Jason Spezza took a shot that took a strange bounce off of Milan Michalek to make it a 5-1 game, and then Spezza undressed the Red Wings' penalty killers a few minutes later and fed Michalek for the prettiest goal of the night. Filip Kuba (!!!) added a goal with just under 2 minutes left to bring the game within two, but that was as close as the Senators would come.

Star-divide

Sens Hero: Milan Michalek
Michalek was in fine form tonight, leading the team with 6 shots and potting two goals because of it. His speed looked to be back tonight, and he looked stronger on the puck than he did last season. Let's hope this game is a sign of how he's going to play all season. Each member of the Michalek-Spezza-Filatov line was a +1 on the night. Every other Senator was a minus.

Sens Hero: Jason Spezza
Sure, Michalek got both of the team's goals, but both belonged as much, if not more, to Spezza. The first goal was a Spezza shot that took a strange bounce off Michalek, while the second one involved Spezza making a fool out of everyone on Detroit before feeding a wide open Michalek (who made a nice deke to get it past Howard). If you missed the game, watch it now:

Sens Killer: Turnovers/Defense
The Senators made far too many defensive-zone turnovers, which is what killed them in the second period. Every single defender on the Senators' blueline made at least one defensive zone giveaway during the game, and many came back to haunt the team. No defender played particularly well, but Erik Karlsson had an especially disappointing game. The Senators ultimately gave up 39 shots on goal. Poor Craig Anderson.

Secondary assists are points too!
Mika Zibanejad had his first NHL point with a secondary assist on the  Kuba goal, while Filatov had one on the first Michalek goal.

What about the Captain?
Alfredsson's stat-line should be ignored today. Yes, he was a team-worst -3. However, he had a great game tonight, showing speed and strength that we haven't seen from him in quite some time.

Stephane Da Costa's promotion
Mika Zibanejad started the game on the second line, but he was replaced in the second period by Stephane Da Costa. The reason? Da Costa was arguably the Senators' best player in the first two periods. He always seemed to be in the right place, he managed to steal the puck with incredible frequency, and he had some dazzling passes that Chris Neil simply couldn't capitalize on.

Bad news, Bobby
According to the scoresheet, Bobby Butler played a game low 6:28. The next lowest Sen was Erik Condra, with 12:04.

MacLean really isn't impressed with Butler

Only played 6:28 tonight, every other player played at least 12 minutes.

It surprised me to see he had that little ice time

Personally, I think he made the most of it. He was working his butt off.

Is it just me...

… or were our experienced defencemen (Phillips, Gonchar, Kuba) some of our worst players tonight?

Karlsson was off too.

Forwards showed lots of jump, if not finish.

Great to see the Spezza who hangs on to the puck (instead of passing blindly) and shoots a lot tonight. If he keeps his late-season from last year he should have a great year.

It was not just you

But I wouldn’t include Kuba in that group at all. I didn’t think any of our defensemen had a great night, but Kuba was way down the list of bad players.

Some promising signs tonight

You can see the rough framework of what this team is going to be under MacLean. Plenty of room for improvement, but also reason to believe we will see improvement.

Sensitive much?

Or did my posting a picture of an apple turnover not tip you off that I don’t actually take it that seriously?

Whoa, whoa, whoa

Then why are you taking MadCash’s comment so seriously? Let’s examine the possibility that he was joking around too before snapping at him, okay?

I think right off the hop this was a difficult game to start with. The schedule makers did us no favours by having us play one of the perennial contenders in the league on the road, then our biggest rival also on the road. I know this was hashed over last week with the whole Leafs on back to backs every time this season, but really it still is frustrating. Also not having played for a week was kinda stupid, but I believe that’s our own scheduling fault.

This is a team that needs to have some successes to gain confidence and playing the Wings at home on opening night, as well as being there the night they honour the Red Wing alums who died in Russia was a pretty big mountain to climb.

by modsuperstar on Oct 8, 2011 12:00 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, but you know, every team is going to have to deal with some kind of adversity this season

Winnipeg has to deal with all kinds of timezone shennanigans this year, for example. I’m not saying our scheduling isn’t unpleasant, but I don’t want to use it as an excuse.

I guess perfect is a relative term, but still. That was one of the four boldest statements I read in the past 6 minutes (I then spent the next 9 minutes on this joke).

All in all

to come out of Joe Louis Arena with a 5-3 loss, is not so bad. A couple posts by Zack Smitth and we have a tie game. Fact is, our D need to be more careful with the puck. Good to see top line performing (who says Michalek and Spezz have 0 chemistry?). Thought Phillips had a tough night, as did Karlsson. Glad to see Cowen and Da Costa have real good games. Back at it tomorrow!

by DaveYoung on Oct 8, 2011 2:27 AM EDT reply actions

I'd tend to agree

Add in that it was almost 5-4 on the PK, too. I know almost doesn’t count in the stats column, and 5-4 or 5-3 both look the same in the win-loss area, but the fact that these guys didn’t just fold for the rest of the game after that bad stretch is a good sign.

The pros to take from this game: we are in a two-way for the top-rated power play, and a ten-way tie for the top-rated penalty kill!!!

the key to success...

is special teams – we’re on our way!!

by west-sider on Oct 8, 2011 9:09 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

We are fine

The team showed a lot of jump. It was fast tempo and the first game, against a very experienced, excellent Detroit team. The top two lines look really good. The defense will tighten up. We’ll be fine

by whatsinaname on Oct 8, 2011 9:31 AM EDT reply actions

I think that we have to remember...

…that they also didn’t just give up after the fifth goal. Unlike teams of the past, they kept pushing back right to the end. Sure they have a lot to learn, and they may not win many of the games at first, but at least they will be more fun to watch than at this point last year

by Acrobat on Oct 8, 2011 9:37 AM EDT reply actions

And besides...

Michalek is on pace for 164 goals this season… doesn’t that mean we won the Heatley deal?

:)

I hope so!

I’ve got Michalek in a hockey pool.

Red WIngs Style game

Since we are going to be trying to play a Red Wings style game its nice to see it first hand right off the bat. It gives a chance to see the young guys what we are gunning for and that it works.

Didn’t have high hopes for this result I’m hoping tonight is better overall especially anderson and the defence.

by Beanster on Oct 8, 2011 12:07 PM EDT reply actions

Tough for a young team like the Sens to start two on the road. Can’t get the match-ups you want so teams can take advantage of that. Looking at last night’s shift charts it looked like the Sens wanted Phillips and Lee out against Datsyuk’s line but a lot of the time the Wings put them out against Karlsson and Kuba. Expect Spezza to see a whole lot of Phaneuf tonight.

In my mind, that's going to be a key matchup

Spezza is going to need to use the speed of his wingers, Filatov and Michalek, to handle the Phaneuf-Gunnarsson pairing. If that line isn’t able to use their speed, it’s going to get ugly.

Judging from how Wilson matched lines against the Habs Spezza should see Lupul-Bozak-Kessel for the first portion of the game. So there will be a lot of speed out there.
