Sterling Predictions: About our second-line centre...

It's time for our penultimate publication in the pre-season prediction panel, people.

Most of our eyes this season will be trained on the young scorers in the Ottawa Senators lineup, rather than the league standings. The kids still have a lot to learn about being everyday NHLers, but lucky for them, they'll be given plenty of opportunities through the season. The openings in the lineup make it difficult to know what to expect, but we won't let that stop us from making predictions.

We'll focus on the second-line centre spot, which seems the most open to discussion: Who will score more points: Peter Regin, Stephane Da Costa, or Mika Zibanejad?

Star-divide

DarrenM:

Peter Regin, simply because he's the safest pick to play the most games (injuries notwithstanding). He had an awful year last year, but he's too skilled for that to repeat. I think he's exactly the type of player MacLean will love, and he'll put him in a position to succeed.

DaveYoung:

Wow, tough question. Peter Regin is the best bet to play the most games (unless his shoulder keeps falling out), but I always find Regin skates around a lot and doesn't accomplish very much. My head say Peter Regin, my heart say Mika.

Star-divide

Adnan:

This is a really tough one to answer, because at this point, it can't be said which one of these will play a significant number of games. Zibanejad and Da Costa could be sent to the Elitserien and AHL respectively, while Regin has his injury issues (though he seems to be okay now). I am going to pick Mika Zibanejad because he is the only one guaranteed top six minutes and linemates if he stays.

Varada:

As solid as Regin looked in the preseason, and as occasionally beautiful the pass from Da Costa, it was Zibanejad who was driving the net, playing dirty in the corners, and just generally doing what you've got to do to get the attention of the Murrays and Macleans of the world. He also scored timely goals. I think the Sens might start the season with Regin (if he's healthy) but by season's end it's Mika's job to lose.

Mark Parisi:

I guess the real question is whether you believe Zibadnejad will play the whole season here. Despite his strong preseason, I don't. Senators fans should know better than most that a good preseason isn't indicative of a good regular season. The simple fact is that the second line is not a place for an 18-year-old to learn to play hockey, unless you're Crosby playing behind Lemieux. In his first nine games, Zibadnejad will face off against: Valtteri Filppula, Sens Killer Mikhail Grabovski, Matt Cullen, Paul Stastny, Marcus Johansson, Daniel Briere, Nik Antropov (but probably Alexander Burmistrov), Ryan Johansen, and Brandon Sutter. That schedule should be enough to convince GM Bryan Murray to send him back to Sweden. That leaves us with Da Costa and Regin to chose from. I believe Da Costa is more talented, so I'm saying Da Costa.

Ryan Classic:

Petephanika Da Reginejad.

Zibanejad.

BobbyKelly:

Peter Regin. Because I really want him to. If Regin gets the most, it isn't necessarily because Z-Bad and Da Costa have fizzled. If one of them comes out on top, it's probably because Regin has taken a hard fall down the depth chart.

Peter Raaymakers:

I was going to say Peter Regin, but I just think that Mika Zibanejad has all the tools to put up points as a top-six player, at least on this sparse Ottawa Senators roster. He's got the right attitude, but it also seems likely he'll get to play with some good linemates (Daniel Alfredsson, for one), and he'll see powerplay time. Stephane Da Costa had a good rookie camp, but I'm not sure he's got the size to stick in the top two lines.

Is this a development year or not??

Hey Sens fans, I know it has been a long time since we caught a break, given the Redden over Chara, Heatley over Hossa, Having to cut Havlat free, the Heatley betrayal, the gutting of our farm system for superstars like Varada, Arnott, DeVries, Bondra, Sillinger, etc, the crappy draft pics, the playoff losses to the leafs, Lalime’s backhanded “save”, and the Stanley Cup defeat but it is possible….just possible that we have a couple of young players who have what it takes. Let’s stop talking about sending them down. Z-bad was everything we could have wanted in the pre season. He mucks in corners, he has a heavy accurate, shot, man’s body and seems motivated. DaCosta is small but showed flashes of brilliance and sees the ice like he has 8 eyes. If we have all pegged this as a development year, let them develop here, in Ottawa, against the best competition. These are the new Senators, lets stop treating them like the emotionally fragile old Senators. Trial by fire, don’t let them get too low, use the pressbox liberally for all the players and make them hungry and earn their ice time. For once we have the players to do that with and we can do it for the low cost of half of what the Rangers are paying for Redden not to play in the NHL.

At first I thought this was a send Z-bad home post

I’m not sure the decision to sit the youngsters has anything to do with Sens psyche. If anything, I think playing Zibanejad will be the result of over eager expectations.

Toss up between Regin in Da Costa for me, with Da Costa battling for 2nd line and top scoring by 5-10 points. But I think both will be weak.

Arnott?

I like him. But he never played for Ottawa.

I choo-choo-choose you

I’m also going with Z. Personally I see DaCosta struggling and being sent down for a while.
I’m also wondering if MacLean will steal a page out of the Wings’ book and use Regin as a winger. Don’t we have a glut of centres right now?

Zibanejad

I voted for Zibanejad since he seems to have the 2nd line centre spot at the moment and should keep it if he stays with the team. Of course my pick only makes sense if he sticks with the team past the 9 game mark. MZ has good hands and if he sticks he will probably have Alfie on his wing all year. That should lead to a decent number of points for a rookie.

DaCosta seems likely to be in and out of the line-up and possibly up and down to Bingo, while Regin is just not that good a scorer (although he is a perfectly fine all-around player).

In an all or nothing pick, I will go with Zibanejad.

Zibanejad.

Why? Because I like him. That is all.

I don't know for whom to vote

I imagine that Zibanejad or Da Costa would score more points than Regin, but you never know.

I'm starting to rethink my Zbad vote.

I’m just starting to think that Regin’s going to be given more chances at the spot.

Da Costa for me

I’ve seen SDC turnaround programs with his talent and I believe if he is given the chance to play he will play a major role. SDC Gets my vote.

I keep seeing many posts with people suggesting MacLean is leaning to Regin

I haven’t read any quotes from MacLean where I got that impression. Where did it come from?

Personally, aside from a hot streak at the end of the season two years ago, Regin hasn’t shown he has what it takes. I like the guy, but to me it looks like Zibanejad has earned the position coming out of training camp. To me it seems like Zibanejad should get the position until he shows that he isn’t deserving of it, and then Regin or DaCosta can have their shot. At this point though, they haven’t shown enough to be deserving of the position over Zibanejad.

Common sense is the most evenly distributed quality in all the world.
Everyone thinks they have enough.

Z-bad.

While I understand the concern about having an 18-year-old play such an important role on the team, everything about Zibanejad’s play since he got to Ottawa suggests it’s his job to lose. Young players come into the league in top physical condition these days, and as long as they can handle the psychological challenges of facing much stiffer competition, there’s no reason they can’t be impact players right away. Nugent-Hopkins will start the year as one of Edmonton’s top centres; Adam Larsson is slotted to be NJ’s top defender and power-play quarterback; Landeskog has made the Av’s line-up and could well play top-six minutes, while Sheifele has a shot at playing a similar role in Winnipeg. This isn’t about marketing the team, either; it’s about being objective about who the best available players are, regardless of age and experience.

Playing behind Spezza, and with players like Greening and Alfredsson on his wings, Zibanejad will be somewhat protected from the opposition’s top defenders. He’s already one of the more physical forwards the Sens have, so he shouldn’t have a problem in that department. And if keeps raising his game in the third period like he did throughout the preseason, Maclean will likely continue playing him in clutch situations.

This is the clincher to me. He’s a big guy, who has played against men in the past. I think as long as he has the mental toughness, he can make it. He’s got some experienced guys who will cover for him, and guide him when he needs it. I think it’s definitely his position to lose.

Now with Regin and Da Costa – I wonder if either can play the wing? Especially Da Costa, who is a sneaky guy who is just slippery as all hell and stays a step or two ahead of the competition.

by The Tif on Oct 6, 2011 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd have to agree

It’s his position to lose. I just don’t think he’ll look nearly as good against top NHL-second line players and not training camp guys.
