Silver Nuggets: What is Chris Phillips' role?
On Friday, Graham Nichols over at The 6th Sens wrote an article about Chris Phillips slowly having his role reduced. Now we know he is not going to demand a trade ala Dany Heatley, but what does this mean for Phillips?
So, is his role being reduced? By average ice time per game, Phillips is ranked third on the club. This would actually be fourth had Sergei Gonchar not missed the last two periods of the Washington game, bringing his average down. However, in terms of shorthanded ice time, Phillips is still second on the club and just eight seconds behind Brian Lee.
Phillips is also no longer exclusively being used against the opposition's top players. That task is now being given to Filip Kuba and Erik Karlsson. Against Detroit, Phillips and Brian Lee played against the Pavel Datsyuk line (not exclusively, but more so than anyone else). Against Toronto, it was Erik Karlsson and Filip Kuba who largely played against both the Phil Kessel and Mikhail Grabovski lines. This continued against Minnesota where Karlsson and Kuba played against Dany Heatley and Mikko Koivu. Karlsson had 19 minutes of even strength ice time, and more than 10 of those minutes was against the Heatley line. Phillips mostly played against Kyle Brodziak's line. This changed against Colorado where Phillips played against Matt Duchene's line more than any other defenceman. Lastly, against Washington, it was Karlsson and Kuba again who played against Alexander Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, while Phillips played against Alexander Semin who is no slouch either.
So, what is Phillips' role now? He is definitely not part of the top pairing, that is clearly Erik Karlsson and whomever his partner happens to be. It is also worth mentioning that Phillips is playing with David Rundblad, so perhaps the reduced role for Phillips is more to protect Rundblad than Phillips. To be fair to Phillips, he's not being paid like a top pairing defenceman so it isn't fair to expect him to play like one. I have often been critical of Phillips, but I actually like his recent play. Over the last year and the early part of this, I no longer think he is good enough to be getting top pairing minutes or playing against the opposition's best lines all the time. But giving him a reduced role will allow him to be more successful and contribute. I see him as a second pairing guy, and possibly third pairing next season, with a good amount of penalty kill time.

I'm a little annoyed that he knows a "bruise" will keep him out tomorrow
That seems kind of wimpy to me.

i hope you're being facecious...
not sure if you’ve ever taken a shot off the foot, but i’ll tell you that i have taken shots half as hard as that and limped for 2 days.. you can’t build muscle around your foot ! bone bruises hurt!
No, I'm not really being facetious
I know those shots hurt like crazy. But I also know a lot of healing can occur in 24 hours. To know how you’ll be feeling in the future seems impossible to me, especially if it’s a matter of pain tolerance.

Kind of a misnomer to say that WTYKY post talks about a dilemma
There’s no dilemma in there. It’s just talking about how really that Washington game was a best case scenario for us.

Still not exactly a dilemma
Look obviously it’s a difficult position wanting to cheer for the team but wanting a good draft pick since you know they won’t do well, and I wouldn’t have objected if you said the article provided a take on the dilemma we’re in or something. But a post titled “On having the league exactly where we want them” and with an overwhelmingly positive tone is not talking about a dilemma.

Please no 3-0 run...
Look at the standings…Winnipeg has 0 points, Columbus has 1 point, we have two points, in a logjam with a bunch of other teams. Now, these teams aren’t going to lose all their games, but why give them a better draft position? The last thing we should want is to finish 9-12 in the East, get an average player and become entrenched in mediocrity for the sake of getting some meaningless wins.
L- Philly, I could live with a win here but a loss would be nice.
L-Winnipeg FOUR POINT GAME PEOPLE. If we lose this, Winnipeg gets two points, we stay ahead because of the games played factor but then…
L-Columbus. They can go up to THREE POINTS, we’d be one point behind them!

We’re not a bubble team, and we don’t even have any injuries to deal with yet.
Also, what do you want them to do, throw games? Because they’ve been investigated about that once before and I understand that there are some serious consequences if you’re caught doing that. And good luck convincing these players to throw games anyway.

I see your point, but I disagree. I want them to go 3-0. I think they can, and I think a good run will help them gel.

I really don't see them beating Philly
I mean it’s possible, but I don’t think it’s reasonably likely.
Winnipeg and Columbus sure. But I think most of us were expecting a win against Colorado too.
I'm hoping for a win against Winnipeg
Or at least a spirited game. Four point games are BS at this point – there’s lots of time left for sucking hard and tanking the season. When we start to do that, I’d like to have some good games I can look back on.

I conceed the odds are better in picking 1st – 3rd vs 4th – 6th. But you said yourself that “Z-bad could be a keeper and likely is”. I like the drafting/scouting history & potential of BM and his staff, and have no problem conceeding the best chance at a pick in order to see effort, talent and a few wins. Thats why i watch the game. To be entertained and to see the team win. I trust this scouting staff to bring home a solid pick, regardless of if it is a 1st overall or a 10th overall.

Yup. The other top prospects seem pretty D-heavy
If a lot of the high-end talent this year is on D, it would be very annoying to have a high pick that would get us a player we could have gotten later anyways. That is, assuming of course that we don’t continue to stock blue liners, but instead opt to choose a lower-rated forward.
If Yakupov is head and shoulders above the rest of the forward prospects and we’re not cruising for the no. 1 pick it would certainly take a lot of the joy out of being a lottery team in the season half of the season.

Speaking of Phillips' role, I think that has a lot to do with Paulrus' style.
Maclean likes a puck possession game, so it makes sense that against the top line you have our best guys at playing keepaway. Not out best defensive guys (Phillips, Cowen and Lee). If they don’t have the puck, they can’t score. And if they’re trying to break out of their own zone, they’re less dangerous.
It’s no surprise opposing goals have come on the breakaway – Karlsson is learning, but only now is he learning how to use his positioning to get the puck (see Washington game). Otherwise, once they’re past him, it’s all good.
What is Phillips role on the team?
I see it this way:
1)I don’t believe that all of a sudden, Phillips lost the talent to play shut down hockey. In the past when Phillips has been strong in that role is when he was playing with another defensively sound defenseman. Gonchar, Kuba, Karlsson, Runblad – none of these guys fit that bill. (Volchenkov, Chara did) Lee, Cowen, Carkner do.
2)The entire team had a tough year last year. Especially the defense. Not that it was entirely the goaltenders fault, but when you make a mistake on ‘D’ and your goaltender can’t ever bail you out, it doesn’t help. Phillips in particular seemed to really struggle. I think he’s suffered some confidence issues as a result. Face it, when you’re -30 something on the year, its got to weigh on you.
3)Phillips is getting older. He can’t necessarily handle 25 minutes a night vs the opposing team’s top line. Not only are the minutes taxing, playing against the other teams top lines is more of a physical challenge and more mentally taxing.
I think Phillips is a valuable contributor the the team. It is about him being used smarter, not harder. Defensive zone draws, penalty kill. Limit his ice time to positions where he can be effective. Give him a partner that is strong on ‘d’ to help him regain some of his confidence. Play him against the 2nd line instead of the 1st. As he gains confidence back, he will then be a more effective mentor for the younger players on the team. With a confident Chris Phillips, PM can put him out in any defensive situation and not have to worry.
Again, use him smarter, not harder. He will be effective. He can still play the game and he can do it well.
Common sense is the most evenly distributed quality in all the world.
Everyone thinks they have enough.
That sounds about right
He should be able to do well on the second pairing. Although, I don’t know if he necessarily has to play with a defensive guy.
I don’t know about the others, but I have liked Phillips/Rundblad for the most part.
An Ottawa Senators supporter in Toronto, Ontario. I am cool like that.
I think it is tough to judge this early on who works with who.
When it gets to be 10 games in, you can start to see trends. Granted there seems to be only one season to judge Phillips on without a solid ‘D’ partner. My memory only goes back as far as Chara, & then Volchenkov. Last year, he was usually with Kuba, Gonchar or Karlsson and it didn’t work too well. The games he played lined up with Lee and Carkner seemed to go a lot better for him. Maybe it is a comfort thing for him to be able to just go out and do his thing. When he has to cover for a less defensive guy he tries to over compensate?
Common sense is the most evenly distributed quality in all the world.
Everyone thinks they have enough.
I agree Karlsson and Phillips have been brutal in the best. And definitely agree it’s too early to say, but I am just saying I have liked Rundblad with him.
Playing with Volchenkov was probably some of his best I can’t deny, though I would pick Anton as the better partner in that. In a future pairing with Lee or Carkner, it will have to be other way.
An Ottawa Senators supporter in Toronto, Ontario. I am cool like that.
But how much of that success was the fact that both were in their prime?
Both have declined since then, and I’m pretty sure that even if they were reunited, they wouldn’t live up to that standard anymore.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
See original post, point # 3
Common sense is the most evenly distributed quality in all the world.

It was more directed at Adnan than you
And I think Phillips and Volchenkov would probably be better than either of them on their own now, just not as good as they once were. Plus I think age has been a lot harder on Volchenkov than on Philly just because of how he plays. The body can only take so much.

I actually liked that approach from Cowen, though
He’s not a puck-mover; he shouldn’t try to be one. I’d much rather have him get the puck to someone else than try to get fancy. His job should progress the same way every time:
1) Find the player with the puck
2) Separate the player from the puck
3) Pass the puck to someone who can create offense with it
4) Consult map hidden on wrist to figure out where he is

I don't have a problem with that being his game by any means.
But I don’t want to see him uncomforatable with the puck, which is how he looked to me. From what I’ve heard he’s actually got a pretty good first pass. That was missing from his game I thought.

Yeah if he is going to be a pairing guy, he should be a good all round player. If we are expecting Karlsson to improve his defence, Cowen should get more comfortable with the puck.
On the other hand, five games into his career, I am okay with conservative play if he isn’t comfortable.

It makes me wonder about a comment he made
Anderson made a comment a while ago about how he didn’t seem to think he was deep in his net. At the time I got the impression that he was kind of on the defensive.
In retrospect, it makes me think that more than likely there is something going on. I’d rather believe that than believe the “I just got the 3m contract, now it’s safe to suck” theory.

I feel like the song would have been a bigger hit with these lyrics
Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs
Rec'd also for timing
given the Footloose remake is in the works or coming out soon. Out of the park on two fronts – well done Mr. M!
I’m pretty sure Gonchar is at home in his underwear singing Karaoke to this song. His agent might be there with him.

From Scanlan
Sens coach Paul MacLean calls Sergei Gonchar’s bruised ankle a “pain tolerance” issue. Translation: suck it up and play.
An Ottawa Senators supporter in Toronto, Ontario. I am cool like that.
Translation:
It is too painful to watch you play. Sit out since we have a handy excuse with your foot bruised.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
Take it easy on Gonchar... Please...
That first period he played against Washington was easily his best period in a Sens uniform. He was solid on ‘D’, he was moving the puck well. Hell, he even blocked a shot. Give the guy a little credit for playing well. I myself have had a bruised heal and could barely walk on it, let alone attempt to play a sport at a high level.
Face it, at this point, Sergie will need to have 0 distractions to regain his form. He doesn’t need the distraction of pain to deal with on top of trying to play his game. We have lots of players, its a long season. Let him heal, and he’ll be back.
Common sense is the most evenly distributed quality in all the world.
Everyone thinks they have enough.
Well it was tongue in cheek
I’ve been defending him for the most part, with the exception of calling him slow.
Oh Captain, my Captain!
Yeah, this
It’s not Gonchar’s pain tolerance that’s an issue, it’s the pain tolerance of the rest of us.

GOTTA HAVE THEM ALL!!
Seriously – I think someone found a way for us to ice a lineup of only Karlssons, including that kid.
A couple of Karlssons should tide us over
at least until we start drafting Alfie’s kids. Then we’ll be rolling.
We've already got Mattias Karlsson
… just need to get him back to North America. And Henrik Karlsson can’t be any worse than Craig Anderson has been this season.

Time warp
I think that Phillips is just caught in a time warp where none of the Sens dmen are very sound defensively right now… not that they won’t be, but they aren’t right now… and so with all the reshuffling of the depth chart and the search for who fits with who, our GA is off the charts.
So the Stache is trying everyone out.
This draft is loaded and we should be gearing up to have lots of picks. Unfortunately we don’t have much to trade with that others would want.
Naturally any GM who’s calling is looking to scavenge Spezza or Karlsson…. no dice on that one…
What do you think Phillips could get us in return?… not much.. And who would we play in his place? That will be a test for BM and Company.
