Silver Nuggets: The Age of Lehner is Upon us
What is better than golden nuggets? Silver Nuggets of course! Tonight, the Ottawa Senators take their alleged talents to Long Island to face the New York Islanders. All the focus from a Senators perspective is on rookie goaltender making his first NHL start in front of a national audience in both languages (TSN and RDS). Here are some of the Sens headlines today:
- Robin Lehner does not seem too concerned at the prospect of making his first NHL start for a team on a six-game losing streak. (Sun)
- Daniel Alfredsson has not yet given up on the playoffs. Bless his heart. (Sun)
- Chris Neil is angry and Chris Campoli paid the price. (Sun and Citizen)
- Corey Locke, the AHL's leading scorer, plays his fifth career NHL game and first with the Senators. He is expected to be on a line with Shannon and Foligno. (Ian Mendes)
- Game preview. (Sens Extra)
- Things are going bad when the prediction panel is split in a game against the Islanders, with four predicting a win, and three losses. (Sens Extra)
- A look into the struggles of Peter Regin, he of the being-outscored-by-Chris-Neil variety. (Sens Town)
- The Cory Clouston Fashion Review (possibly soon to be renamed), looks at possible draft targets for the Senators. (Cory Clouston Fashion Review)

No, I'm trying to rebuild on-the-fly
One of you guys demands a trade, don’t think for a second I’ll hesitate in sending you to the AHL.

Seriously!
I really hope the kid does well. Such a high-pressure situation… hard to imagine that he’s apparently not all that nervous (or at least says he’s not). I’m nervous for him.

Same here
But if Marc-André Fleury can survive a 3.64 GAA in his first season in Pittsburgh, and Cam Ward a 3.68 in his, Lehner can totally become Ottawa’s top goalie.

I dont see how it could be more high-pressure than his first NHL minutes

My justification for why it could be a good move
The case for it being a bad move is obvious, team struggling, bad situation, not enough experience.
But how about the other side? Most of the fans have given up on making the playoffs, we already have lots of people to blame for goals allowed (Phillips, Kuba, Gonchar, Kovalev), so in some sense it could be a great chance to get him NHL games against better competition than the AHL. The pressure would be a lot lower now than in a new season when everyone is full of hope. Plus, we can always protect him and play him against the weaker teams. Granted as the 27th place team, there aren’t a lot of weaker teams, but for example, let Elliott get shelled against the Caps, Pens, etc.
As an aside, does anyone know how the rookie deal works? He’s only played 2 games, but he has dressed for a lot more, I think more than 10 already. If it is games played, that is another thing to consider, do we want to burn off a year of a cheap contract in a lost season?

As long as he can stay healthy
That seems to be a quality we’ve been unable to land in a #1 goaltender for ? years now (maybe since Lalime??)
Most games his played in his career is 47 in the OHL
After that is the 11 in Binghamton and the Frölunda J18 team in 07-08.

With Campoli scratched tonight...
The following defencemen have been healthy scratches this season:
- Campoli
- Carkner
- Karlsson
- Lee
- Kuba
- Hale
The only two defencemen to suit up for the Senators this season without being healthy scratches are Phillips and Gonchar and at -19 and -20, they have tried their best to join the list!

Gonchar's 19 points > his -20

So Campoli gets scratched for getting beat up by Neil?
He should’ve fought Kuba instead!

This is my thought on this game tonight:
It’s the second Thursday in January. Opinions and morale around the fan base are spiralling out of control. We’re coming off getting embarrassed, letting up 6 goals in a lopsided loss. Tonight, the Senators are in New York. They’re starting a recent AHL call-up in goal, viewed by many to be the saviour of the franchise.
Sound familiar?
Nope
