Rangers place Redden on waivers, intend to send him to AHL
It seemed like it was only a matter of time, but I'm still amazed it's happening: The New York Rangers will place Wade Redden on waivers today, and if when he clears, he will be assigned to the Hartford Wolfpack of the AHL--along with four years and $23M left on his contract.

Hard to believe a player like Redden has fallen so far
He used to be so smooth and quick in everything he did.

In all honesty
he was a victim of circumstance. If he were signed to a $3 million deal, this wouldn’t have been an issue.
Redden would have had a tough time living up to this contract (as in all six years of it) in his prime. It was an incredible burden placed on him by Glen Sather, and he (not surprisingly) didn’t live up to it.
It’s sad, really. He just had a baby daughter three days ago, and now his life is turned upside down. Granted, he’s still got $23 million owed to him, so I guess one can’t feel that bad.

Hartford's not a bad place to live
He might even enjoy it there. Riding buses won’t be nearly as nice, but if he really wants to, he can probably charter planes for his team for most of the trips. Or can go to Europe, if they’ll let him; Switzerland would be a pretty nice place to play. The bottom line is that, as insulting as the demotion is, he’s still making $6.5M this year and next, and then $5M for the following two. I think he’ll do just fine.

No doubt
I was surprised Sather gave him the contract he did coming off his last season here.

So was everyone else
Including Redden, I’m sure.

It's sometimes attributed to the new NHL
The inability of his defence partner to slow down oncoming checkers took Redden’s time and space away, so he was rushed and unable to adjust. Apparently. Personally, I just think for whatever reason, he’s lost his motivation in general.

I don't know what's going on with him
He used to be able to make good plays while being rushed. Then… almost all of a sudden he could just be forechecked into a bad play. His skills have eroded whether through negligence or something else. Just crazy.

Body Language
There were always unconfirmed rumors about him doing coke and whatnot so maybe his game changed if he got into that.
Someone mentioned motivation. Seriously though, his body language, especially during the playoff years in the recent past with the Sens and into his Rangers tenure has been pitiful. He lacks intensity.
His body language reminds me of a current Leafs D-man: Dion Phaneuf.
Somethings missing up there with both of them.

Why feel sad though? $23 million over 4 years in Hartford – I’d trade jobs with him right now.
Best of luck Wade and congrats on your new family member.
He's a shadow of that player
It makes me sad
