London Rookie Camp, Game 3: Ottawa Senators vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Next Game

Ottawa Senators
@ Toronto Maple Leafs

Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 7:00 p.m.
John Labatt Centre, London

TV: Rogers 22, Radio: TEAM 1200, Online: LeafsTV (delayed)

Here it is, folks: The main event. Now we get to see a whole whack of prospects who will likely never see significant time with either team take part in the storied Battle of Ontario, as the Senators and Maple Leafs respective rookie squads face off in London, Ontario this evening.

How will goaltender Robin Lehner bounce back from his sub-par effort against Pittsburgh? Will Bobby Butler, Mike Hoffman, and Eric Gryba be able to maintain their scoring streaks? Who will Tim Spencer drop the gloves with tonight? All this, and hopefully more.

They rotate

Foote played well, for a guy who’s never finished a year with a GAA below 3

Well the Sens rookies rooted the Leafs last year 7-1

So I expect a complete blowout

I'd probably still read them

Or at least guess what had happened based on whether they said YESSS or NOOOO.

I haven’t decided whether I’ll listen now or watch later. If there is a consensus in here then I’ll follow suit.

Not too bad

But not great. A lot of pressure from the Leafs PK, and not too much possession, but a couple of shots.

Is that Jussi Rynnas on goal?

Yes, it is too bad

Somehow I manage to leave early to catch the games that matter, though. ;-)

Bad defensive zone turnover. Puck went to… someone, who passed it to Hoffman, who had a wide open net.

Decent shot block by Cowen

Not sure he played that 3-on-1 cleanly, but he blocked the shot, so that’s a plus.

Leafs powerplay now, though…

Lehner with a great stop from point blank

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Sep 14, 2010 7:28 PM EDT reply actions

The one who slipped or the one who took the guy without the puck?

Neither looked great, but Lehner saved their asses

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Sep 14, 2010 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Cowen was taking his man

Who happened to be the puckholder. But then his partner stepped up to try and lay the body on Cowen’s man—leaving his own wide open. So naturally the puck went there, and this #64 didn’t even get a good hit in.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 14, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Just saw that hit by Schira

Ottawa 1, Toronto 0

Shots after one period, 13-10 for the Leafs.

Hoffman with the only goal, off a broken stick giveaway by Mueller.

Leafs powerplay to continue in second.

Not only fifth round

Fifth round of his second year of draft eligibility. The guy wasn’t even drafted in his first go-around.

Then again, he hasn’t played an NHL game yet. So it’s worthwhile holding back our expectations.

by Peter Raaymakers on Sep 14, 2010 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but I don't think Murray gave Figgy all that money to play 4th line

Hoffman was the one crashing the crease like a guy barreling down on a catcher who has the ball already

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Sep 14, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Wiercioch has been pretty bad, at least defensively speaking

Guy needs to just play simple, positional defence, and then take advantage of offensive openings when he can. Not great tonight, IMHO.

Weircioch gets called for an iffy penalty

Can’t say I blame him, he’s a player who walks the line. Similar to Ovechkin, except Ovechkin is a lot better than Kadri, so he’ll get away with a lot more—both in terms of leeway from the referees, and in terms of how much his opposition will allow him to get away with.
