Hockey or Die

has got to be the most timely, ripped-from-the-headlines source of wit.

I mean, it’s not like they could have featured a Joe Thornton or a Nabokov or an Ovie figurine. Nope. Not when they can trot out a six-year old example of a guy who was world famous for winning President’s trophies, year after year, and never making it into the Conference Finals.

Don’t get me wrong, the joke is funny. But is it as funny as it could have been, or even as funny as it could have been 6 years ago?

Indeed

I pointed out the stats in the other thread we were talking about it in, but Lalime’s playoff stats are also pretty good. He’s far from the worst playoff goaltender in the league.

I’m juts amazed how far he’s fallen since his Senators days. Confidence was always a huge thing with him, but was he really that insulated under the Martin system and the Senators defence that it completely made up for a lack of skill? Or the lack of skill that is evident now, as backup in Buffalo.

I never understood the hate for Lalime

Apparently we dropped him at just the right time, before his decline, but people were crazy in their undervaluing of him (not to mention the overvaluing of others at the time).

I mean, Sean Burke? Really?

I’d have rather traded for Brian Burke.

He and Brent Johnson both had three shutouts in the same series in the same year

Lalime had that ridiculous series against Philadelphia where he went 4-1 and only let in two goals. 0.40 GAA. Insane.

The joke aside, I found it always pissed me off the Sens goalies were always doing something crappy with the McFarland toys. Lalime taking a drink from a water bottle or Ray Emery playing the puck at the corner boards were hardly inspiring. Meanwhile the Joseph, Belfour and Toskala are action poses making big saves. Always seemed conspicuous. The Hasek one is better, but he’s making a lame kind of save.

Lalime didn't even get his own sculpt!

They just recycled the Jocelyn Thibault figure (seriously, he had one) and changed the paint job and only sculpted a new face.
