Chance to improve our goaltending?
I'm sure that many Ottawa Senators fans have looked wistfully at Stanley Cup Champion and Unrestricted Free Agent Antti Niemi. While certainly not one of the league's best netminders, Niemi has proven himself to be a starting goaltender, albeit on an elite team. While he may not have won the Cup for his team, he didn't lose it for them either.
So in comes Antti Niemi. Yes, signing him would leave our beloved team with a three-headed goaltending monster. But it could work. If we assume that Niemi gets one spot, that leaves LeClaire and Elliot to battle it out for the back-up job. Neither may be happy about it, but both are Free Agent's at the end of the season and have to earn their next contract.
So I suggest that Brian Murray sign Antti Niemi to a 1 year, 3 million dollar deal. That way, the risk of signing a goalie who only ever played behind an elite defense is lessened. At the end of the year, they team can decide which of the three goalies to keep.
How does this work salary Cap wise? Well, I must return to my old standby of trading Filip Kuba. And then we hope to God Almighty that one of Jared Cowen, Eric Gryba or Patrick Weircoch can make the team.
This solves both of Ottawa's issues: Goaltending and lack of grit on the back-end.

ahh, Hasek. I’m pretty sure he had pedigree.
Also, yeah Neimi won the cup but if he was worth even the 2.75 he was awarded another team would have jumped on it. I am not as concerned with our goaltending as everyone else seems to be.
It seems Sens fans are obsessed with the idea that LeClaire/Elliot are not good enough. While I would not consider either elite, I not consider either incompetent either.
Now, if Niemi could be had for 1-1.5, then it would be worth the shot, but he also is not an elite goaltender yet.
I am AWESOME! Are you?

So, Manthong:
On a one-year deal, it’s worth a try. With Alfredsson, Kovalev, Gonchar etc, the time to win is now. If this team is going to make a run with these players, it has to be soon. So the organizatio needs to find a way to ice the best team possible. It needs to take some chances. The two area’s that need work are girt on the back-end and consistency in nets. This move supplies both.
Ryan:
I’m a lover, not a hater. I don’t hate Kuba or LeClaire or Elliot, nor do I resent having them on the team. But I love the team enough to want it to succeed, and in my opinion, this move gives them the best chance.

I hate Hasek, I wonder if that counts
Anyway, I hate the idea of spending that money right now, especially knowing how shallow we are at RW after Kovalev leaves this year. I’m a big believer in Lehner and I’d like to see Elliott be his mentor next year after Leclaire goes the the KHL.

Ok, it's letting me reply directly now..
It would only be for one year though. Like I said, he played for an elite team, so how much of that plays into his success? I would offer him one year, and if he plays well…consider signing him longer term. I believe in Lehner too, but a year starting in the AHL will do him a world of good. And then we can bring him in slowly as a back-up. At the end of last season, we can choose who we want to start for the year(s) that we need to develop Lehner. This singing would be all about THIS SEASON. Kovalev, Niemi, LeClaire and Elliot would all have their contracts expire at the same time.

I don't think Niemi would take a one-year deal.

Dude, you totally hate Kuba
If I know one thing about GMC, it is this
Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.
This is why I have no signature
Now nobody knows nuthin’ bout me and that’s the way I likes it.
Kuba love/hate aside, there are so many good points being made on all sides of this issue. </brownnosing
I agree with Manthong that the market does not lend itself to Niemi finding anything north of $2M, provided he stays in this league (a big ‘if’). And I agree with GMC that a one-year deal to shore up what many cite as the team’s weak link presents no long-term damage (other than to Lehner’s development, should Elliott find himself in Bingo).
But realistically, I can’t see Melnyk ponying up that much dough for anyone, even Brian Lee, to ride the buses, to say nothing of the issue of where Brodeur would play. Unless GMC is prosposing that we carry three goalies on the 23-man roster, then disregard this whole paragraph.
To synergize this debate with one on a previous thread, why don’t we just wait until someone’s broken composite stick blade flies into the bench area, blinding Leclaire for the season, before committing even $2M to another goaltender. I like being able to laugh at the Isles and Oilers for using cap space and roster spots on third goalies.
I do agree that with the age of the average Sen creeping ever higher towards Detroit levels, that the time to make a run is now. With Kovalev playing for one final NHL contract and Gonchar on the opposite point drawing defenders away from the RW half-boards, I am very optimistic that this team can compete with Washington for powerplay supremecy. All we need now is for Shanahan to implement all his new-fangled rules and we could. Just. Go. All. The. Way.
Next season, who knows?
But is Niemi, or any other new goalie, the best allocation of our limited remaining cap space (Kuba’s departure, not withstanding), or was the whole thing about Niemi and Leighton and Halak that you don’t need to invest in a proven winner to succeed?
Maybe Elliott becomes next Spring’s Niemi. We may not have the shutdown guys like Philly, or the transition guys like Chicago, but I like our current seven-man blueline compared to Montreal’s April/May puckmovers and pointmen. All we need is for these guys to control the puck, Detroit-style, and limit the shots against to less-than-Halakian levels. The key being to keep teams on the perimeter with our plethora of bona fide third-liners, and the loss of Volchenkov should be mitigated.
Anyway, my conclusion is that the current 22-man roster (pending Donovan’s or Bass’s addition) is more than adequate to compete against the suddenly weak-ish Adams Division. Signing Niemi is a luxury that, even if we could afford it, seems extra extravagant. I don’t even favour adding a shutdown defenceman or a Top-6 forward. A minimum wage earning 14th-forward would be my preferred use of that 23rd roster spot.

I never suggested Demoting Elliot.
You could have a 50-15-15 split between the three of them…
But that is flexible, depending on how the three play.
I know that it’s not done in the NHL…but….thinking outside the box never hurt anyone right?

No I guess I was the one to suggest someone get demoted in this scenario.
As for never hurting anyone, I refer you to the Isles’ and Oliers’ spot at the bottom of the standings, and their (probably) non-causal relationship to the fact that each team carried three goalers, until DiPietro and Khabibulin suffered their usual fates.

Haha.
I know that I give off that impression.
But it’s not hate, he’s just the most easily expendable piece of salary that can be cleared.
I prefer him to Kovalev, but Kuba actually has value. There, see I gave him a compliment!

Signing Niemi is a reactionary move
No one knows what the Sens will get outta Leclaire and Elliott this year, but is it worth dropping 3 mill to solve a problem before any problem has presented itself?
Niemi is still a relatively unknown quantity, much like Ray Emery after the 06-07 season. And I know Ray is an outlying case but it still shows that today’s treasure can be tomorow’s trash.
Worst case scenario we sign or trade for a new ’tendy around new years. If the current market dictates the price shouldnt be too onerous.
Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.
The goalie crapshoot!!!
Acquiring or developing goalies is a crapshoot. That’s why teams seldom waste first round draft picks on goalies. The position is 60% mental, 20% the quality of the team’s defence, 10% positioning and 10% reflexes. Any goalie can get hot for 20 games or so, and if you sign a goalie based on that, you can end up with very large regrets and untradeable assets.
Niemi has played a handful of regular season for a very good team, so signing him to a huge contract is like setting down a large bet on double fives and rolling the dice.
Leclaire played on a very defensive-minded team averaging 31 games a year over four seasons, and had one good year… was still unproven and signed to a huge contract… so he’s another crapshoot.
Elliot has promise and is still unproven… another crapshoot.
The position is 60% mental, 20% the quality of the team’s defence, 10% positioning and 10% reflexes
I prefer a netminder that gives 110%

Contract year for both Leclaire and Elliott.
We’ll get more out of them this year than any other year. With the miniscule goalie contracts being signed this offseason, they both know they have to stand on their heads to earn a job for next season.
My aim for the season...
Is making it round 2. I think we can do that with Leclaire/Elliott.
I have never seen Lehner play but people seem to think he’s all that and such, so let’s wait and see what he can do next year or year after. Now if Niemi can be had for 1 year, then it might be worth a shot. Also, I think if Kuba could have been traded he would have been.
