Easy Solution to Kovalchuk Fiasco!!!
In order to maintain the spirit of the cap, just legislate the following: NHL teams can sign players for as many years as they like as long as all years are at least at a rate than is one-half of the total cap hit. That means recinding all of the contracts like Hossa's and Luongo's... and give teams one year to remake those contracts under the new rules. I suppose that figure of one-half would end up being hotly debated.
Whaddya think of that?

That seems like a pretty logical and practical solution
It might be one of the possibilities brought up in the next CBA negotiation.

Old NHL creeping back in
All this getting around the salary cap stuff is, is a way for teams to get an advantage over other teams who can’t afford it. I’m actually surprised the Leafs have not tried this or the Rangers for that matter. Teams that used to spend crazy money to keep all their stars or put together championship contenders for years. Five years at 5 million is five years at five million. This cap was supposed to stop teams from shooting themselves in the foot like the Islanders did with Yashin’s ten year ten million dollar deal. The cap is supposed to keep salaries in line with the reality of league revenues.
