Senators sign Campoli to one-year, $1.4M contract

TSN is reporting that the Ottawa Senators have signed RFA defenseman Chris Campoli to a one year contract valued at $1.4M, avoiding arbitration.

As far as the signing is concerned, I think the price is quite fair for a competent, young defenseman, though perhaps a little high. Then again, thinking it's high might just be the result of the Regin bargain being too fresh in my head. Regardless, keeping Campoli in the fold is the right move in these circumstances: Murray clearly had high hopes for Campoli when he traded Dean McAmmond and a late-first round pick for him and Mike Comrie, and though he has not met those expectations, he really came into his own following the Olympic break and throughout the playoffs. If he is the player we saw at the end of the 2009-10 season, then keeping him a Senator is a smart move to make.

This move adds yet another body to an already crowded blueline in Ottawa. Currently, the Sens have Sergei Gonchar, Chris Phillips, Filip Kuba, Brian Lee, and Matt Carkner on one-way deals. Erik Karlsson is a lock to start the season with the big club, and prospect Jared Cowen had a very impressive rookie camp, leaving some to believe he'd have a shot at making the team as well. If Cowen does make a push for a roster spot, it'll be interesting to see how Murray makes room for him on this blueline.

UPDATE: Steve Lloyd of the Team 1200 is reporting that Campoli played with a hernia last season, and had surgery for it 8 weeks ago.

Rusty's pretty cheap for team MVP

Even counting bonuses against the cap, he’s now the 4th-highest paid defenceman on the team after Kuba, Phillips, and Gonchar.

I don't think he has any

But Cowen and Karlsson do, and they both fall under $1.4m.

Rundblad FTW

It is now almost a foregone conclusion that Rundblad will be the 4th-highest paid blueliner (should he make the team next year and attain all of his bonuses).

Now that I’ve finished typing that sentence, I guess I could have done without with the phrase ‘foregone conclusion’.

Still, we already have at least seven defenders under contract for next year, and Murray should already have shifted his focus to re-upping Phillips, so it’s fair to say that there will be no UFAs joining the defence corps until after the lockout.

Speaking of which, don’t forget that Karlsson, Cowen, and Rundblad (to say nothing of Weircoch, Butler, and Lehner) will not have the benefit of a bonus cushion next season, so even without another Gonchar-esque addition, our effective cap will take a hit next year.

Don't expect Kuba and Campoli to be here next year

There’s a reason it was a one year deal.

Kuba could always be traded, sure

As could Kaberle (remember the time Kaberle was going to Boston for Kessel). Regardless, Kuba is under contract for now and for next year.

Add to that Gonchar, Karlsson, Carkner, Lee, Cowen, Weircoch, and Rundblad and you’ll see that I am not wrong about having 7 or 8 defenders under contract. Again, Lee could be moved, but until he is, my assertion remains true. Now add a new contract for Phillips and I agree that Campoli will have a hard time squeezing into next year’s plans, but don’t assume that his current one-year deal precludes him from being in the mix.

If I’m not mistaken, as a 26 year old with only 6 years of service, Campoli will be restricted again next year, and will quite likely be offer-sheeted.

Lots of one-year deals are made with the intention of re-signing the player the following summer.

Lee has no future here

Hell, he doesn’t even have a number! And we don’t know if Weircoch and Rundblad will be ready next season.

No doubt

So that would still leave us with 7 defensemen (Phillips and Campoli included) who would remain property of the big club.

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Jul 31, 2010 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly

Which is why I prefer to frame things within a ceteris paribus mentality.

It doesn’t matter what might be. It only matters that we currently have as many as 10 blueliners competing in September 2011’s training camp.

Unless you think Murray would let Phillips walk.

Seven defenders under contract is a good thing

There are always injuries, and there are always players who could use a break. If we’ve got seven of them, awesome.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jul 31, 2010 6:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course

I typed ‘offer-sheeted’, when I meant to type ‘qualified’.

My whole point was that Campoli wasn’t gonna be gone just because of his one-year deal, and anyone who would suggest that any player was likely to be offer-sheeted needs to have his head examined ;-)

The only guy

that Campoli looks good against is Picard, or possibly Lee. Spez always gets attacked for bad turnovers, Campoli invented the turnover.

by alfie4PM on Jul 30, 2010 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

Cowen wont be in early

Cowen is recovering from Mono and will not start for the Sens. He is probably way behind in his training and will not be game ready. Look to Campoli to start the season with a real chance to be permanent and Lee to be traded at some point maybe lol

by Hockey Playoff Run SensFan on Jul 30, 2010 5:40 PM EDT reply actions

Mono sucks and takes forever to recover from too. Let’s hope Cowen fights it off fast; but, I dont expect him making the big leagues this year unless he does something special in the minors.

by Leajjes on Jul 30, 2010 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Him having mono probably really fucks the Sens here. If he’s not ready for training camp then he misses the competition for a D spot, then goes down to Junior without so much as a 10 game tryout, at which point he’s lost to the team for the season.

by modsuperstar on Jul 30, 2010 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I have absolutely no problem with this

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Jul 30, 2010 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the plan was to give Cowan every opportunity to win a spot in the lineup this year, so it kinda sucks in that regard. I would have loved to see him at least get a shot.

by modsuperstar on Jul 31, 2010 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Patience, young Padawan

I too would love to see him play, but with the glut of blueliners we have now, I will always prefer to slide his ELC another year. We don’t need him attaining UFA status before he turns 27, to say nothing of his impending arbitration rights.

I thought he came from the WHL? Regardless, you are right. Also, another year can only help with his injury recovery (supposedly it takes a full year to get back to 100%) and his overall readiness(skating, confidence, awarenesss, etc) when he does get his first shot at the bigs.

by DW19 on Aug 3, 2010 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions

While I agree with this in principle...

I would have liked to see Cowen tear it up in camp and allow Murray to move Kuba freely. I feel strongly that Kuba is expendable now that Gonchar is here and I would like to have a physical presence playing with Karlsson.

I’m not willing to trade Kuba if it means Lee gets in the lineup, though.

I'm not willing to trade Kuba

If it means we only get a 3rd-round pick.

The market isn’t exactly primed for trading a multi-million dollar blueliner.

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Aug 2, 2010 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I'm with you there

But Meszaros got a 2nd rounder. I’d like to think we could get that for Kuba. If we can’t, there’s no reason to trade him.

Not quite true, I don't think

If he goes down to Junior and plays like a man among boys, the Sens can call him up later in the season for his nine-game tryout, can’t they?

by Peter Raaymakers on Jul 31, 2010 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

There is nothing that prevents that

Except the laws of the jungle. It is such a rare occurance, but I do recall it happening once or twice. I just can’t find any examples right now.

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Jul 31, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

You can certainly call someone up on an emergency basis

The Kings did it with Schenn and the Leafs did it with Kadri.

Now I don’t know what defines an emergency, or even if such a Professional Tryout contract can be extended to two games, let alone nine, but there is always the possibility that Spokane misses the playoffs (yeah, right) and Cowen could join the Sens for the final 10 games.

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Jul 31, 2010 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that’s the only case he could come back up. Once a player is sent to Junior the team doesn’t have recall right the same as the AHL. I can only ever recall teams giving a player a shot at the start of the season, like MA Fleury a few years back. I don’t recall anyone who was Junior eligible getting a shot midway through the season.

by modsuperstar on Aug 1, 2010 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Rmergency basis is, far as I know, the only way an junior player can get called up to the NHL game midseason

The case with Schenn was that the Kings were playing in Vancouver and only had 11 forwards healthy. Manchester (their AHL affiliate) was playing out on the east coast, while Schenn was much closer to Vancouver (I think he was in Victoria for something). Emergency situation. Schenn signs a one-game tryout, without pay, and suits up for that one game. After that it’s back to junior.

Same went for Kadri. Too many injuries, and I think the Marlies were way out of town. Kadri, playing for London, was the closest player to the ACC. One-game tryout.

Likewise, players can be assigned to the AHL after their junior year is done, I think regardless of their age. Z. Smith finished his junior career and then joined Manitoba for the playoffs, before being drafted in June by Ottawa. Jordan Eberle and Robin Lehner are similar examples. Cowen signed an NHL contract earlier in the season, which meant that he could play in the NHL after junior (but signed too late to play in the playoffs).

But basically, you’re right. Once assigned to junior, you can only play in the pros if your season is over or on an emergency tryout.

Although Sutton helps the team more now, one is a player on the decline who is near the end of his career, while the other is entering his prime.

Agreed. He gave Karlsson time and space to make his plays in a way that not many other defence partners could.

by dzuunmod on Jul 31, 2010 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

You're right, of course

I just really liked what Sutton brought to the team; he was fun to watch, and it seemed like he made a difference more often than not, whether he was crushing dudes or managing to join the rush. I can’t think of Campoli doing anything that entertaining.

by Rob.D on Jul 31, 2010 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Sutton would be great

But I don’t know if I’d want him in favour of Campoli. In favour of Lee, certainly, and he’s an upgrade over Carkner, but he’s also more expensive.

I wonder, how bad is Brendan Witt? Because I’d wager we can pick him up on recall waivers from NYI for $1.5M, which would be cheap. If not, the fact that he’s about to be bought out might be working to bring down Sutton’s market value to something the Senators might be able to afford.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jul 31, 2010 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Brendan Witt was terrible last season

Why the hell would the Sens want that defensive liability on the team?

Mariners and Senators fan in Miami, covering the team in Ottawa at Silver Seven

by Crooklyn Banks on Jul 31, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I remember a statistical analysis done by (I think) one of the SBN blogs showing that Brendan Witt was, in terms of salary and production, the most overpayed player last season. The analysis was done maybe two thirds of the way through the year, anyway.

by dzuunmod on Jul 31, 2010 7:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Sutton's defensive value was 1.3 with New York and 0.2 with Ottawa

So his value total was 1.5, Campoli’s was 2.2. If anything, Ottawa should trade Brian Lee for Sutton and a 5th-rounder.

Mariners and Senators fan in Miami, covering the team in Ottawa at Silver Seven

by Crooklyn Banks on Jul 31, 2010 12:50 PM EDT reply actions

I assume you are talking about Defensive GVT

In which case, keeping Kuba (3.7) for next year makes sense after losing Volchenkov’s 4.2.

BTW, I’m not entirely sold (jk) on any metric that implies that Volchenkov was only our third best defensive defenceman, but the overall measure sure seems to be among Awad’s best.

Campoli, btw, rated as our 4th best overall blueliner with a 4.1 score. So I conclude that we should trade Derek Smith to free agency for Sutton and an eleventeenth rounder ;-)

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Jul 31, 2010 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Volchenkov just played 64 games

The guys ahead of him played a full season, so you can’t blame the metric for saying Volchenkov was the 3rd best.

by Crooklyn Banks on Jul 31, 2010 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I know

I was just kidding about that. Awad did a great job on GVT, which makes it all the more difficult for me to dismiss his new Delta stat.

I say difficult, but certainly not impossible. That shit is wack.

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Jul 31, 2010 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

For whatever reason, I just find it weird that Campoli will be making more than either Foligno or Regin next year. I get that he’s a defenceman and it’s apples and oranges, but does anyone think that Campoli will be more valuable to this team than either of those two?

by dzuunmod on Jul 31, 2010 7:17 PM EDT reply actions

Nope. But there are inequalities like that all the time.

Campoli: Five NHL seasons, 320 NHL GP, 0.32 PPG
Foligno: Three NHL seasons, 187 NHL GP, 0.36 PPG
Regin: One NHL season, 82 NHL GP, 0.36 PPG

It’s a measure of how long he’s been in the league, and how much he’s able to command as a result. Campoli would have had much more ammunition in an arbitration hearing than Regin, so that serves to raise the price they settle on.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jul 31, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

by High Priest of Alfie on Aug 3, 2010 9:33 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It was actually only $4.25M

And two years of 35+ prevented the Ducks from taking advantage of the bonus cushion (not that they needed it). I’m obviously not as big a fan of Sutton as many of you guys, but I guess I can’t fault the Ducks for securing a decent crease-clearer for only $2.1M.

That doesn’t mean that I thought the Sens should have done it, but the Ducks still only have 4 blueliners on one-way contracts, so they had the roster space. If only they hadn’t given away one year of Wizniewski for a bag of pucks, I’d say they were doing a fine job. As it is, expect Hiller’s numbers to suffer, with the tandem of Mikkelson and Festerling playing 17 minutes a night.
