Senators re-sign Peter Regin to two-year deal, avoid arbitration

The Ottawa Senators just announced that they've avoided arbitration with restricted free agent Peter Regin, signing the forward to a two-year deal. According to Bruce Garrioch, Regin will make $2M over the course of the contract: $950k for the first season, $1.05M for the second. For a player who had 29P in 75GP last season, it's a bargain for the Senators, especially if Regin can score at a similar pace to that in the playoffs last year.

This likely means that GM Bryan Murray will now focus all his attention on Ottawa's final RFA, defenceman Chris Campoli.

Regin and Smith are part of the youth movement in Ottawa. Both are going to be awesome next season!

I'm having this debate on Twitter: Regin or Bozak?

I imagine the audience will be biased, but still… who will have more points?

by Peter Raaymakers on Jul 29, 2010 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

TRAITORS!

I guess I’ll have to watch Bozak more closely. I’m not giving him much credit.

by Peter Raaymakers on Jul 29, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I gotta say Bozak as well

Which is less a commentary on his skill, than it is about the fact that Bozak will see all the PP1 minutes at center. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him get 10-15 goals to go with almost 50 assists.

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Jul 29, 2010 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Also voting Bozak

Though I can see Regin outpointing Bozak, but Regin needs to stay on the top line all year, and that’s no guarantee with the way Clouston juggles.

Regin at 1M is a fantastic deal.

I’m amazed he didn’t go to arbitration.

He would have

Except Edmonton wasn’t allowed to offer-sheet him once he filed for arbitration.

Maybe we can trade him for Penner, Cogliano, and Smid.

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Jul 29, 2010 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd rather have Regin than any of them

As a group, that’d be an NHL98-esque trade.

It’s a good deal and representative of his regular season contribution. He knows his next contract will be sweet and some Sens first and second line players will be gone by then. It’s a shrewd move by him, his agent and Murray of course.

Campoli sign and trade, then sign Sutton

Now that Regin is locked up, I’d like to see Murray sign Campoli (before or after arbitration) and then try to trade him, so we can sign Sutton.

Is that crazy?

Campoli was good during the playoffs, but we really need to grit on the blue line.

by Commie Monkey on Jul 29, 2010 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

Sign and trades may not be bad for PR, but it hurts a team's reputation with other players

The Hossa trade and sign did not do the Senators any favours. It’s best advised against.

Yes, this

Plus it’d be better to sign Campoli, keep him, and trade Lee to make room for Sutton. Although the numbers won’t work out; even trading Lee won’t give us enough room to sign Sutton.

If Cowen has a good training camp, we may be able to trade Kuba. If that becomes an option, Sutton becomes more reasonable—as does another good scoring forward.

I was just about to post about Suttton...

with 2.6 million in cap space, we could re-sign Sutton for 1.5-2 million a season. The way the market has been, he may be just take it.

Plus, we wouldn’t have to buy-out Kuba! Imagine that! (hard to believe that’s coming from me, I know.)

Is anybody surprised that Murray opted for two years?

It always seemed to me like that was the wise thing to do, but in light of the massive ruling in favour of Clarke MacArthur (can you believe he got more than Wheeler?), as well as the majority of this year’s cases being settled out of court for just one year, there was always a chance that Murray would hedge and choose the shorter term deal.

by Spezzal Teams Playa on Jul 30, 2010 1:45 AM EDT reply actions

I think in Regin’s case, as with most arbitration RFAs, two years is the max they would want to sign for because of how close they are to free agency. Murray possibly could have offered 4/5+ years but Regin turned it down. 2 years is perfect with this money, gives the Sens a chance to see what they truly have before committing and does not tie down Regin too long before a big pay day.

I am AWESOME! Are you?

by Manthong on Jul 30, 2010 8:31 AM EDT up reply actions

If I heard right, MacArthur got that much because that's what his side was asking for, and the Thrashers didn't even bother to argue the case

I am soooo happy to hear about this!!!

I’m happy it’s a 2-year deal. I see a lot of promise in Regin especially when paired with Spezza. Regin seemed to connect with Spezza and understand his style.

Like most people I want Sutton to get signed. Just a one year. This way we can ensure proper development of the younger guys. He will be a good mentor for the defensive defenseman consist Volchy is gone.

I prefer Campoli to Lee… It’s too bad Lee didn’t develop well in our organization.

by Los Blancos Chicca on Jul 30, 2010 7:27 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Silly me..

Not paired with Spezza but placed with Spezza on the same line.

by Los Blancos Chicca on Jul 30, 2010 7:29 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I wouldn’t mind having Sutton back either. However, I am not too concerned if they can’t bring him back. I like Campoli better than Lee as well right now, but I think (as was discussed in previous posts) if the organization could convince Lee to focus more on a defensive game he really could be a steady d-man.

Also, I don’t mind this roster too much right now, it’s the same going in as last year minus Volchenkov and Picard but plus Gonchar. Not too shabby, we know there is better depth up front than was thought last year and there are some young, hungry players standing in the wings waiting for a shot. Should be an interesting season.

I am AWESOME! Are you?

by Manthong on Jul 30, 2010 8:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess also minus Cheechoo, or is that a plus?

I am AWESOME! Are you?

by Manthong on Jul 30, 2010 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you

I think Lee deserves one more shot in a more focused role… he has been in and out as a filler a lot of times… one more shot is no biggie…

I would pick Sutton over Campoli obviously. Sutton could help with Lee’s development if the Sens make sure Lee focuses on being a defensive d-man. Although when Campoli has a positive game he has been better than Lee, he hasn’t been consistently good or consistently getting better…

I am looking forward to this season as well. I like the fact that we have a lot of young blood and hunger. At the same time, I would LOVE to see Alfie get a Stanely Cup. So if Murray/Clouston figure out a way to get the best of both worlds (development + cup lol) I would be VERY happy!!

by Los Blancos Chicca on Jul 30, 2010 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Another typo haha

He will be a good mentor for the defensive defenseman SINCE Volchy is gone.

by Los Blancos Chicca on Jul 30, 2010 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

let Campoli go..

He only gets 10-15 positive games during the whole year. In my unprofessional ball hockey opinion, he’s too much of a liability and we can do better with a rookie by paying less from the pocket.

by AAZZ on Jul 30, 2010 9:01 AM EDT reply actions

I agree

with your ball hockey opinion. But only if that means its someone other than Lee taking his spot. Despite what people may say, as far as I’m concerned Lee has already been given the opportunity to impress and has failed.
