Senators hire Rick Wamsley as goaltending coach

Pascal Leclaire has a new goaltending coach: His old goaltending coach, Rick Wamsley.

We have a goaltending coach: The Ottawa Senators hired former NHL goaltender Rick Wamsley to work with the team's goalkeepers, according to reports. He replaces Eli Wilson, who was fired on January 13, 2010, and leaves the AHL's Peoria Rivermen to join the Sens.

Apparently Wamsley has worked with Pascal Leclaire in the past, so he has some knowledge of the Senators' highest-paid goaltender--although we're still not sure if he or Brian Elliott is the Senators' top goalie right now. Or even Robin Lehner, the rookie who appears bound for some AHL time this season.

When Wilson was hired, it was because he had an existing relationship with now-former goaltender Ray Emery. Hopefully this hire, also apparently based on a pre-existing relationship, works out better than that of Wilson.

Tugger

I always thought Tugnutt would eventually get a shot. He’s in the neighbourhood, had good results and reports from the junior national team (I think that’s right) and is a pleasant guy to have around.

True enough.

Definitely the friendliest professional player I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. I’ve got a signed card of his from his brief term with the Nordiques.

I’d have been all for Tugger getting a shot.

I liked Tugnutt, too. I am sure that if he works his way up he will get a shot in the NHL at some point. He was a really professional guy who knew how to get the most out the talent that he had. If he could pass that attitude on to young goalies he should have a good future in coaching.

Plus, I would be surprised if he has ever burned a bridge in his life. There should be lots of organizations where he would be warmly welcomed back.

Obviously Rick Wamsley was better known for playing for other teams, but as soon as I read his name I thought Toronto Maple Leaf.

Hope he does a good job...

The one area where the Sens could stand to improve a lot this year is goaltending consistency. Elliott and LeClaire were good at times last year, but you never knew what you were going to get. Both seem like level-headed guys, but for some reason they got really hot or cold and couldn’t stay consistent. Other than fixing any technical glitches that is the biggest thing that I would like to see Wamsley work on.

I fully agree with this.

I just don’t know how you teach consistency.

Positive thinking?

Actually, I think it’s more confidence and calmness. Elliott’s been able to brush off bad goals in the past, so he’s probably got solid mental makeup. Leclaire’s got natural skill and ability, he just needs to get into the right mental state, and not always be thinking about where his next injury will be.

80% mental, 15%talent, 10% voodoo, 2.5% organized locker

If they have solid fundamentals and talent, it really comes down to learning to snap to when soemthig goes wrong. It’s more than just brushing off a bad goal, not letting it get to you; it’s also being able to get back into focus and to be engaged again. That’s the part that seems to be missing. I’m not sure how Wamsley will do, but I hope we can get Pascal going, if only to make him appetizing if Lehner shapes up.

Not bad, I guess

But I’d be happier if Wamsley gave the full 110%

Good interview with him on the team1200

They interviewed Wamsley on the radio and he said Pasquale’s best quality was his ability to shrug off a bad game. He noted other successful goalies attitude as being the same. Some of the criticism directed at Pasquale last year was his seeming lack of caring about his loses but it’s not a bad trait to have especially in this city of goalie killers. I am looking forward to the work he does with these guys and as always remain optimistic about our chances this year until proven wrong.

I'm surprised Eli hasn't landed in Montreal yet

He has been Carey Price’s personal coach for years and I honestly thought Gainey was going to poach him from us right after he stole away Jacques Martin.

Elliot

Do you think there will be an issue that the team went with LeClaire’s old coach. Think Elliot might have an issue with that or he gets it they need to have there #1 happy esp considering all the money he’s making. Personally, I think I like Elliot better, something I just don’t like about LeClaire. I wonder if they considered Wamsley for Bingo at all.

You cant deny

that this looks like a statement about who murray sees as their ideal number one (which i suppose is understandable given how much they are paying him). But suffice it to say, they didnt hire Elliots old coach (or Robin Lehner’s dad if he is available)

I don't think there's any doubt that the team wants Leclaire to be the #1 guy

He just hasn’t taken advantage of any of his opportunities. We can see flashes of his talent, he’s just horribly inconsistent.

Leclaire the #1

I’m not sure the whole team. I think Murray wants him to be #1 but I’m not convinced Clouston feels the same way. Coach didn’t seem particularly found of Leclaire, maybe it’s just different personalities. Leclaire is very laid back and the coach is we’ll just say not laid back and leave it at that.
