Nice one!!

Would like the details of the salary and cap hit, but that’s always the case when a signing is announced…details to follow.

After that Clarke MacArthur award

I don’t know where to set the over / under.

I would have expected no more than a $1.6M cap hit, but maybe now I could see Foligno getting almost two million.

That is an outrageous salary.

If Foligno is making more than a million this year, this is a terrible signing by Bryan Murray.

by ojc on Jul 21, 2010 5:40 PM EDT reply actions

Murray already offered him $892,500 a few weeks ago

Are you suggesting that Murray hold firm to that minimal raise? ’Cause he could have.

I have no problem at all with this hit. In fact, had Nick not gone into a tailspin over the final month, I would have been rejoicing at such a low number.

Sure, I expect Regin to usurp all of the Top-6 minutes, so paying a 4th-liner a million might seem high, but Foligno is the first guy I look to when Kovalev or Michalek gets hurt, so I see this as a bargain.

That's because Foligno's basically a fill-in unit

He’s too good for the 3rd line, not good enough for the 2nd line. So he gets stuck somewhere between depending on who’s out.

This contract will reveal all

In the time he has to fulfill this contract, we will see what his true potential is. We’ve seen good flashes, that hint at a player of real value on the top two lines. He has desire and he has leadership qualities. If he can achieve the promise he has shown, then we win. If not, this isn’t an outrageous salary for the tweener role you describe, I don’t think.

I'd have to agree with this

I’m not certain he will reach his full potential in the next two years, but I think we’ll have a very clear idea about what that potential is.

Re: Potential

Considering he was a late first rounder and projected as a good two-way checker with some offensive upside, what are people projecting his potential to be? If the noises about him coming out of junior were true, then the 08-09 season was probably a good indication of what we should expect

Is this going to be one of those cases where people always deny he’s living up to potential because the numbers arn’t there, or he’s not producing like they’d hope? I mean just because he’s shown the promise of a 25 to 30 goal scorer on a few rare occasions doesn’t mean he’s a sniper in waiting.

Nick does some good things at both ends of the ice; not alot, but enough to make him a valuable piece. If he can stay healthy, check hard and pot 15 or so a year, then this is a good deal.

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

I’m not saying he’s suddenly become a sniper. But teams with strong, puck controlling forwards who can check and have some speed usually find a role for them on the top two lines where they complement the talent. If he can be consistent these two seasons in performing those roles effectively, then we have a useful part of the puzzle.

Bingo

he has shown great progress. I would be more worried about what he might cost two years from now if he keeps developing the way he has been.

Foligno is 22 years old, and suffered an injury-plagued season

also one where his mother died. I think it’s a very fair deal.

I think it's fair as well..

I also agree with Be_rad’s comment above. This will give him and us to see what his potential is. Whether or not he reaches full potential is no big deal but we will be able to know enough in the next 2 years. He’s young and I like the flashes I’ve seen so far.

He also only had 30 points

I don’t care how old you are, in fact being only 22 he should get less than a mor eproven player. All I know is that he does nowhere near the job of Ruutu. This is another Chris Kelly deal. It looks ok to start, but by next year we’ll be wondering what the hell Murray was thinking. How is this going to fit under the cap? This lines Regin up for a much bigger raise. It’s all just a terrible trail of poor cap management dominos.

by ojc on Jul 22, 2010 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t forget that by next year Kovalev, Leclaire, Ruutu, Shannon, and Phillips (although in his case I hope that the Sens extend his contract) will be off the books; I think that, if anything, it creates a problem for fitting under the cap this season.

by JonathanA on Jul 22, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Not 1.2 alone

But the state our cap is in and with the players still to be signed I think it’s highly questionable. If Murrray finally pulls the trigger on a trade to free up cap space then this is fine, but if he doesn’t this is just another head scratcher.

I thought Kelly was well worth his contract this year

And I’m not a big Kelly fan. But when your third line center is averaging a point a game in the playoffs, he’s doing something right.

This contract may be precedent-setting in terms of Regin's salary

Foligno had 17 goals and 32 points in his sophomore year, and Regin came off a 13 goal, 29 point performance as a rook. Compound that with Regin’s strong playoff performance and strong finish to the season, and from the looks of it Regin should get around 2 million annually based on Foligno getting 1.2 million.

Playoffs don't count in arbitration

All the Sens have to show in arbitration are Regeans stats during the regular season. The fact that he played so well do not matter. This is his agent using what all the fans saw in the playoffs to try and get more money. As for Foligno he has proven himself last year and sounded determined in the upcoming seasons play. I have a feeling something with Mike Fisher might happen before the season starts and he will take his place on the second line or at least in that role. He can be physical and wants to be according to his interview on the Team. We’ll see
