"At no point did I ever demand a trade"

[...]

"I talked to Bryan and (said) I read the newspapers, I see every year there's trade talk about me. I just basically told him, if you want to move me, you can move me. Obviously, I had (a) no-trade clause coming up on July 1. I want to be here, but if he thinks it's best for the team for me not to be here, and the city, then he can move me.

"He told me he wasn't going to move me, and to be honest, I was happy about it, because I like being here in Ottawa."

Jason Spezza, speaking to the media from his annual charity golf tournament (from the Ottawa Sun).

Still voting Fisher

Silver Seven - The Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators Blogs

First one is arguable, second is false

Fisher is a monster in the playoffs, especially when the going gets tough: Overtime.

But I’m not sure what you mean, that he doesn’t lead on the ice… he’s usually the first guy in on the forecheck, and he hits like nobody’s business. He doesn’t lead offensively, because that’s not his style; he does lead physically, tough.

He did lead the team in goals last year

Though I don’t think he will this year

Second that

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

Cutting through the bull...

That’s a lot more plausible and straight-forward explanation than some of the wild theories floated by the Sun and others.

Spezza might not make all the right decisions on the ice, but off the ice he is a good organization guy with a level head and an amazing amount of patience to deal with all the media stupidity.

Not to toot my own horn, but it harkens back to the post I wrote about the Sun’s sensationalistic coverage from a few weeks ago:

"… the Sun didn’t “fabricate” the story about Spezza’s unhappiness—but they did use that unhappiness to fuel and inflate speculation about a trade demand or request, despite not having sufficient evidence to back up that claim …"

Yes, you and others on this site nailed it.

Guess Garrioch will have to manufacture a new controversy to while the summer away.

Here’s a few suggestions
- Kovy is actually a Russian spy sent to Canada’s capital to spy
- Alfie fathers illegitimate triplets
- Chris Campoli demands a trade to Metallurg Novokuznetsk

I’m sure this’ll get no coverage from the mainstream media.

by Hallis Blaney on Jul 20, 2010 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

Well, it's gotten a passing mention so far

At least in the Sun and the Citizen. They certainly won’t give it as much ink as they gave the initial speculation, though, you’ve got that right.

And welcome!

Has anyone ever tested that?

I almost always buy newspapers with good news stories: “Obama wins election”, “Mars rover discovers water” or even better “Sens win playoff series”.

Can't find their website :(

I’d be interested to read that, but I can’t find their website (and I don’t have any trips to Moncton planned). If they do put something up on the web I’ll definitely check them out.

by DW19 on Jul 21, 2010 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions

This is clearly a joke

Anyone who’s ever been to Moncton knows there’s no good news in Moncton.

Cannot play with 'em, cannot win with 'em, cannot coach with 'em. Cant do it.

Yeah, I clicked the link after writing that. Good to see that the Sun and Citizen are talking about it.

Thanks for the welcome! I start my day with this blog and I’ve been loving it since I first started checking it way back who knows when.

Damn straight, Spezza

What else was he going to say about a trade he had no control over?

Hopefully this puts the trade talk to bed for good.

Spezza = Awesome. Speeza's not bad either.

It’s not just his nerdy laugh I love.

But seriously, he’s a really good guy. That quote is a great example of why he’s an true asset to the team. I’m with Peter – next captain for sure.

No, actually I can't get enough of Spezza's nerdy laugh.

Some "quality" quotes from Brennan's column this morning

“As a new dad, Jason Spezza will teach his daughter all sorts of life lessons.

One day he may even tell Sophia Donna that sometimes it’s best to bite your tongue."

Wow, Don, very enlightening. Wish you would learn that lesson some day!!!

“Now, Spezza’s going to find out what affects will come from his complaints of being booed by the hometown crowd. Could very well be that acknowledging the boos will only make them louder.”

Or, it could be that fans appreciate Spezza’s honesty. A concept you seem unfamiliar with.

“Spezza became ultra-sensitive to his critics during last April’s first-round playoff loss to Pittsburgh.”

Imagine that, a guy who is trying his best gets frustrated when he is losing. Could that possibly mean that he cares about the outcome?

As I may have mentioned a few times already, I am continually amazed by the patience that Spezza shows when dealing with the juvenile delinquents that call themselves sportswriters in this town.

by DW19 on Jul 21, 2010 8:58 AM EDT reply actions

Spezza has never shown anything but class

Even when his coach called him a boy. I have nothing but respect for the guy. He’s always faced the music, and that’s definitely not something you can say about every player in the league.

Honestly, it's amazing he's so willing to speak with the media

It doesn’t really seem to matter what the situation, Spezza always seems available. Which is remarkable, considering the shit he takes all the time. From everyone; not necessarily the media.
